Leave the computer this morning, go outside and then... Where's the car dude? Dude, where's your car?

Police show up, I guess there has been some stolen cars in the past few weeks. People passing through, boost a car, drive it til it runs out of gas then park it. They recovered three so far. All that was left was a cigarette where the bastard tossed it out of his mouth. Id like to break his fingers if given the chance, more then likley hes already parked it and is long gone.

My wife is PISSED. It was her car. Locked and full tank. No broken glass, slim-jimmed their way in.

2001 Camry. No broken glass, and it was locked. I suspect they knew what they were looking for and knew what they were doing. My truck, window down and open tools in it with motogear was untouched.

No they aren't. You just need to use the right jim, and have it bent the right way for the particular model you're opening. And a lot of newer cars have even easier ways to get in than a jim. The hard thing these days is start circuits tied to a key (takes a few minutes to get around), smart keys, and ignitions that are harder to punch. Cars with On Star or Lojack that can be turned off remotely are a pain in the ass too...........but you can rip the antenna off the on star shit and it won't work. I've never messed with Lojack, but imagine it has a a similar vulnerability.

Leagally can he steal my car?

I doubt I will ever see the guy. But if he gets caught. Can I sue him? Is there anything I can do that would make his life a pain in the ass for a while?

If he's stealing cars I doubt he's living the good life.

If they were to catch him, which is doubtful, you could file a civil suit against him. You could claim mental anguish, your wife that is. But,, like others have said, doubtful he has much to take. I would go find some thugs hanging out in the shitty section of town if the cops do happen to catch him and drop a bounty on his head. But, thats just me.

My stepdaughters car was stolen and recovered a few days later. The cops caught the thief. We had to pay the towing and impound fees of about $400 .Car thiefs should be executed. If you think that is to harsh ,just dont steal any cars and you wont ever have to worry about it.A few years ago some piece of shit was arrested twice in one night for stealing cars in Portland Oregon,if Iwas in charge he would of only got 1!!!

This is what I am afraid of. We spoke to the insurance company they could give us a straight answer of protocol. They will get back to us when they feel its been long enough. I suspect we will have to fight to get a reasonable amount to get a compatible car. Say its worth $5000, we get what? $4000 minus the detectable?

If the car is found, we will have to pay impound, towing back to home and the any damage that is caused that is under the detectable. Overall we get it in the ass while this ass gets three hots and a cot.

Not to mention my wife really has not taken this well at all.

That sucks, Tiki. Jails should be a place where anyone hates to go, not a place to stay for free and set up more contacts for the next crime.

I hope you're one of the lucky ones and things turn out ok for you.

We had a truck stolen back in 1986 when we lived in Tustin, Ca. My wife came out after work and it was gone. The police recovered it 3 days later in Santa Ana. Luckily, there wasn't much damage other than a busted vent window and a scratch on the driver side bed.

I dont know about that, I knew a guy who stole porches for a living. He told me he could pick the car out and be driving away in about 4 minutes. Said he made about 12gs a car and would take 1 every 3 or 4 weeks. He got arrested did a couple of years and had enough money to start a business, a porche repair shop.

If you have full coverage.........pray that fucker is never found. If you want to see what they will roughly give you for it........punch the car into autotrader and say a 500 mile radius around your zipcode. Average the best 10 prices. Print out all of those cars. If the insurance company doesn't come close to that.........send them that. This is what my insurance guy had me do when Allstate tried to lowball me, and it worked.
Anyhoo........most of the time, if you get it back......you're fucked. You end up paying for a bunch of crap, and then to top it off........they've probably thrashed the shit out of the thing and it'll never run right again.

Keep a record of everything........you can write off anything you actually lose to theft on your taxes.
