You and I both brother. I constantly find my self thinking " What if?", all the time . The kid was absolutely amazing on two wheels and a fun kid to talk to as well. Any race I raced in the PNW was better when Brandon was there visor tapping his 65cc over some 85 ft triple only the big bike pros and a handful of other big bikes were hitting. When he moved up to 85's he was even better. Since Brandon left us there has been twice as much National level talent coming out of the NW than ever before and I like to think Brandon inspired the RV's and the Josh Hills in the pacific northwest.

RIP 154

Brandon would've definitely been a top SX and MX rider right now. He was so amazingly fast. I have some pics from the world minis back in 95, i'll see if I can post them up later.

I never had the chance to see him race but I've talked to a friend about him and in his opinion Brandon had JS7 type talent and this friends opinion is definitely one that can be trusted.

This sport is a real heart breaker sometimes

He was one of the few people on 85s to beat Mike Alessi straight up, alot. Sure miss what he could have really done, reminds me alot of Jesse Masterpool. RIP Jesse and Brandon.

Brandon used to run the Monster lenses on his goggles with the crazy rainbow eyes, possibly the only person to ever be able to run those and not look like a dork!

I was at a practice day at a local track ,this littlebitty kid on a 80 sneaks out in vet practice .He is inside me in every turn, very very close but clean.Id pull him on the straights, thinking I got him now only to find his bars 2 inches from my ribs in the next turn, I was going as hard as I could but I couldnt shake this tiny little kid on the 80. Turns out it was Brandon . After 40 years of moto ,that battle with the littlebitty kid on the 80 is one of my most memorable. Godspeed, Brandon

What happened to Brandon?
He was riding at a private track in the So Cal hills. Brandon was actually done for the day and a kid he was riding with asked Brandon to do a quick lap on his bike and tell him what he thought. So Brandon hopped on the kids bike to do one lap. During that one lap he hit a double and a guy on a big bike was hitting the double going the opposite way and they hit head on.

I wish there was more pics and videos of brandon out there. I know someone has to have some. That dedication that was on the end of mw3 was the best.

There are a ton of younger guys out here in the NW that were all good friends with Brandon. I still see a lot of them still have "Layton 154" stickers on their rigs and so forth. I saw him ride quite a few times up here , and he was always fun to watch.

Makes me feel extremely lucky to have survived a really bad head on collision myself. I was on a 450 and weighed about 195lbs......I couldn't imagine what that other rider could had done to a kid on an 85cc bike.

Brandon is missed a lot out here in the NW , even to this day.

I was very close with him and Allen, about the year leading up to Brandon's death we rode together non-stop. They had just moved down to Socal and that was my everyday riding buddy along with Shane Kelly. My first tattoo was the star with Brandon's name and number on it. I have it on the inside of my arm!! Miss both of those kids everyday!!

RIP 154 and 556

D Dog, Brandon was one of the only people to beat stewart and those age groups growing up. He was a little older than my age group.

Btw, I was one of the few riders that beat Mike Alessi straight up Wink

Brandon was very special. in many many ways. At the first Vegas US Open he was one of the youngest riders in the exibition 80 class. James Stewart was a year older and crashed 7 times. Indoor was not James Stewarts game at the time. Brandon Layton #154 was running 3rd and 4 place most of the race until one of the big 15 year olds took him out. Brandon would have taken James Stewart to the cleaners had he lived long enought to race in the stadiums. He would have pulled practical jokes on Stewart that would have wiped out Stewart mentally. I pray his loving and dedicated father Allen Layton is in heaven with Brandion now.
After Brandon died Allen seemed to live life on his own. Allen died in a plane crash on his own. I miss them both dearly.

I was to young to really pay attention to Jeeber, but I remember MW clips of him beating Alessi. He seemed like a genuinely happy kid that loved motocross. Godspeed 154.

I remember Layton very well . He would have been a multi time champion by now . I heard about one race where Layton who was still racing the younger age group of 80 cc riders moved up and raced Stewart who was in the older group and Layton beat him .

Some of us are not familiar with this young Man, He sounds like he was on the path to being one of the greats.

Would someone fill us in on what happened to him ?

I had a few motos with brandon I mostly watched my bro race him when he had just started racing 80s. Great kid, saddest day of my young life back when I was 8-9 I remember the whole day n how it was after, so cal was cloudy for awhile after losing Brandon, he would have been the best there ever was, he was our west coast James Stewart n he was very consistend n never made mistakes. I miss that kid.

Jeff I have a question . I used to coach my my best friends kid . The kids name is Maxwell Pope . I took him to race the world minis in vegas in 1996 after his dad passed away ( his fishing boat sank in Alaska a few months before the race ) . Anyway Max Pope took 3 rd place in the 4-6 pee wee mod class that year and I was trying to find the results of that race to see who beat him . I thought maybe you won it but I can't find the results .

I remember racing with Max, Brandon, & RV all at the same time out on the pee wee track at SIR. Aww the good days. Max was the fastest 50 rider I've ever seen. Only kid that could beat me anyways. Layton would have been the GOAT. No doubt in my mind.

I have a picture around here of all of us. I should dig it up.

We had a picture of him on our fridge for years doing a heel clicker over a 60' + double at the age of 8! The kid was amazing and although talk is cheap I have no doubt he would have been a SX/MX star. Having a full on Yamaha ride at that age was a testament to his ability.

Imagine how many Yamaha's he sold for Lynwood Motoplex back in the 90's.
