The idiot part is your opinion, obviously, but I agree that if I get kidnapped, don't call the cops. If it's one of the days I'm packing, though, I don't think I'm going to end up kidnapped, thus the point I was making about disobeying some laws being the right thing to do.

Nice work.

Yeah, go ahead and tip 'em. Just more authoritarianism rearing its head. I'm not surprised at all. You guys LOVE the government, even though you sit around and talk crap about "socialism" and how Obama is ruining the place, etc. Truth is, any government authority who carries a gun, you love 'em. And the military, obviously, too.

I can never figure out why you guys don't see how conflicted your beliefs are with each other.

You simply have no idea how cartels work.

You could have an m16 and it wouldn't matter.

Your perception of reality is so skewed it's insane.

I don't think drugs should be illegal in the first place, actually.

We're a "free country" right? Well, what is more essential to freedom than being allowed to decide what to put into your very own body?

And if drugs were legal, they could be taxed, and the criminal element associated with them would go away, not just here in the USA, but all over the world.

Prohibition is what made the mob powerful. It made them money hand over fist because a large segment of the population wanted something they could no longer have. And that's how it works. When you have a market (the people) that wants a product, it doesn't matter whether or not it's legal. If it's illegal, the market will be served by criminals. If it's legal, it will be served by legitimate companies. That's reality.

We spend billions a year on the "war on drugs", but I don't think anyone is having trouble getting their hands on what they want, do you?

And as I pointed out already, 1% of our population is in jail in this country. That's by far the highest ratio in the world. And most of those people are in jail for drug-related offenses.

So, stop it. Let people actually be free. The government is enforcing laws that I don't believe they have the right to enforce in a truly "free" country.

I think public-employee unions should be, yeah. But no, this isn't about what makes the mob rich. It's about freedom.

Yes, of course. So does the mob. But where do they get the money that they use to invest in these other ventures?

The black market. Whether it be guns, drugs, alcohol, it doesn't matter; the truth is that a market will be served. All laws decide is "by whom".

So did James flash the lights cause the off duty cops were speeding?? What if those cops were speeding, and if James hadn't flashed the lights they would have killed a family further down the road?

It just sucks that journalism across the board is so piss poor.

Steve, I'm sorry that my wanting to stay safe while I routinely risk my life for the citizens of my county offends you. I do everything in my power to be as courteous to everyone I come in contact with, but sometimes my being able to do my job safely and efficiently doesn't allow that. I'm sorry you have come in contact with asshole cops in the past. Those guys piss me off as much as they do you believe me. I don't dispute their are asshole cops, I see them sometimes. I can honestly say nobody on my shift is the power tripping person you describe, all though some of us hit that asshole point quicker than others, just like I'm sure some journalists you work with can become assholes faster than others when aggravated.

I think it's funny that you think the laws are designed to protect us. From my point of view the bad guys have the system slanted in their direction. That just goes to show how everyone sees things differently. My viewpoints on many things has changed since I started in law enforcement.

I think me and you would agree on many things on the role of the government. I am 100% on your corner on your right to carry. I hate the idea of the bad guys I come in contact with having guns on them, but I hate the idea of me being with my family and being unarmed when approached by a bad guy, and I hate it for you and your family just as much. One of those areas where I agree with you on your safety being just as important as mine.

I am not saying James is a hardened criminal who should spend time in prison, I fully expect him to plea to a traffic infraction, possibly a criminal one (misd.), and I have no problem with that. But I think his actions fit the statute, and their is no problem with him being arrested on that charge. m

Pitbull, I would tend to use the improper lighting charge with someone who was sitting at a redlight showing off their lights, or something of that nature. From what I gather, it sounds more like he began to initiate a traffic stop, which is obviously a police action. To me that is where it crosses the line into Impersonating. But it wouldn't be a problem to use that statute instead.

Oh and about the police vehicle. When I was in Narcotics it was not at all uncommon for us to drive lifted trucks with similar (although probably a few more) lights similar to those in Stewarts trucks. In fact I woujldn't be shocked if his truck ended up in a fleet. The UC cars usually are vehicles that were seized. So they style of the vehicle could very well be a police vehicle.

Any doubt that him and his friend have not done this hundreds of times?

Like the car thief that gets caught the first time out? This was a stupid move by James, but it' one that he has certainly done many times. Much like his crashing, it was only a matter of time. Didn't Sorby say something about "those f'ing lights when Boni called into Pulp?

You sound far too reasonable to be a cop.

Woohoo

I was never debating whether he should've been arrested. I'm talking about the long-term consequences, and it seems we agree on that as well.

So, I'm glad you understand that I'm not talking about YOU in particular.

One good example of laws to help cops here in California is that we're not allowed to tint our front windows. Of course, I did it anyway because it gets downright hot here in the summer, and tint helps keep the inside of my truck cool. Plus, I like to sing VERY LOUD while driving, and I don't want people to see me looking like a complete idiot unless it's on VitalMX.com

But the reason the law is in place is because police officers were afraid when they walked up to a car they had stopped because they couldn't see what the drive was doing.

So, 99.99% of the populace is forced to not tint their windows so that police can feel more comfortable when it comes to the .01% that might do them harm? That's wrong. I don't care who says differently. And besides, as you know, the criminals will tint the windows anyway, so it's a moot point. It's just like gun-control laws.

I believe that EVERYONE actually decides which laws they are going to obey, they just aren't aware of it. People speed, for example. That's a decision. People talk and text on their phones where it's illegal. So I'm no different in this regard, it's just that I will ignore much bigger laws if I feel justified in doing so. I'm not a "criminal" although I will be considered one if I get caught with my gun, and that's not right. I don't hurt people. I don't rob or steal, and I'd never pull a gun on anyone unless I felt a true threat to myself or my loved ones. But I'd be prosecuted and imprisoned anyway.

And that's what's wrong with a country that cares more about the letter of the law than the spirit of the law. And we're slipping closer and closer to the "letter" every day, which is scary - and which is also why I have the other guns I have.

Whistling

I think the nature of the cops often is changed by the general assholiness of the person pulled over. Somehow I can't picture Cox being polite and respectful during ad traffic stop after reading all his thoughts on these pages.

If any of you guys would like to write a letter to the prosecutors office in support of James.
Saying you are a fan of his etc..and just saying something nice about him.
This is who I would send it to. (sooner the better)

Lawson Lamar, State Attorney
415 North Orange Avenue
Orlando, Florida 32801
(407) 836-2400

These type of letters are irrelevant in court, however they can help.
When they send in lots of letters about someone saying they are a good person and show support.
It can help influence the prosecutors office on sentencing or cutting a deal etc...
Maybe even some other LEO's who are fans of James that have met him can write a letter also.
You could even include a photo of yourself with him or your children,if you have got one.

Feel free to post this on other boards.
Thanks.

I think the nature of the cops often is changed by the general assholiness of the person pulled over. Somehow I can't picture Cox being polite and respectful during ad traffic stop after reading all his thoughts on these pages.
I'm as polite as is appropriate, as with anything. I've only gone off on a cop twice, and one of those was when I was pulled over, and he deserved it. They don't get any more or less respect from me as any other person.

I'm not in danger of being abducted by cartels, but regardless, my point about legalizing drugs would make cartels go away, anyway.

They've spent so much time demonizing drugs to justify funding the "war" on them that it doesn't matter. People who don't think for themselves will never buy in to the idea, so candidates who support it will never win. Something like this needs to start on the outside and then go in from there.

Telling someone to slow down is not identifying yourself as a police officer.
not identifying yourself as a police officer.

absolutely....but who is talking about identifying yourself as a cop?

The subject in question is "impersonating an officer of the law".

flashing R & B'S AND telling people to slow the fuck down is 100% "impersonating an officer of the law".
