The big challenge for the future should be further testing to determinate if the Leatt really helps, and how come Alpinestars version say it does something complety different despite similar design (compression preventer)? Maybe some patent issue?
Also, what about lover spine protection? And more important is to do something about the helmets. Not much has happened there during the last century...
I'm using something like this, and feel pretty happy with it despite the odor (pretty hard to wash)!

We designed the Armour Pro for off-road but I realize it would be too much, especially on the shoulders, for most US motocrosser. Top protection though (with ECE certification for the chest also, not only the back like most other), great one of the off-road guys.
For those who want light and well vented back protection, our new N-Frame is made of a "sandwich" of memory foam and absorption material.
Of course all our MTB Downhill and "gravity" products will do for MX since they're all also ECE certified for the purpose.
Thanks for providing this information........IMO the lack of mandated spinal protection is an embarrassment here in the US.
