Not sure if this has been mentioned but could this be another change being implemented purely for the purposes of making the promoter rights more attractive to prospective buyers? It can be presented as a new revenue stream - and as Luxon mentioned above it could be presented as millions of $ additional revenue in the pipeline for any interested parties. Especially if you extrapolate that Clubmx hypothetical number to a bunch of other teams too….yes it’s a total bullshit move with very little chance of success but when your end game is to offload this circus it makes way more sense. Nobody with long term visions of growing this sport would do what they’ve done with this whole media access change.

Maybe this whole thing brings teams, and sponsors of those teams, back to a time when creative advertising ruled the pages of magazines, and race day photos were pretty much used only for race reports. Nowadays it's all insta bangers and youtube shorts, which personally, I think are boring and uninspired.

Content creators should let FELD fuck it all up and go make their money being creative outside of the stadium.

We sponsor a lot of teams and riders (about 70 total pro riders this year). That's a significant investment - about 150 sets of triple clamps and bar mounts, which has a retail value of over $170k. The teams and riders go racing, and they give us access to a shared folder if images from the races that we can use to promote our product, the team, etc.

But with these changes, the teams will now have to pay $500 per race, per sponsor, per photographer(!), to give this same access. That's $15,500 each sponsor per photographer for the whole series. For a team like Club MX, they've got at least 40 total sponsors, and at least two photographers. That adds up to more than $1.24 MILLION to provide photos for the year.

I just don't see that being even remotely feasible. Or the teams are going to have to charge us for it. And we can't afford $15k for photos on top of all the other expenses it takes to get product to the teams. So things will have to change. Fewer sponsored teams, etc. And this is across the board for all companies, not just us!

On one hand, I can understand Feld wanting some money for us to promote our product using images from their series. However, on the other hand, us promoting our product with those images is also promoting the series. So we are adding value to the series at the same time. Could you imagine if all the race photos in advertisements just disappeared from all the magazines, forums, social, etc.? That wouldn't be good for the series...

They talked about this on the Pulp show this week, and John Anderson (Dubya) gives some similar insight about it too:

I work with four companies (incl. Dubya) who sponsor teams in US Supercross, and if this is the case indeed I think none of them will pay for the photos at those conditions. Ridiculous.

Looks like Feld wants to bring back the Paparazzi!   Maybe paparazzis who sneak cameras in will end up being the cheapest source for the photos you need.  But I remember someone saying they are going to restrict cameras for both Supercross and Motocross races soon so maybe that is the next press release to come?

Interestingly...and after actually READING the GNCC media rule changes...

Over at GNCC, content creators get 5 minutes max if each race per event (6-7 racers per event) and 30 minutes total time to use. Also, they're allowed to use 30 seconds from the TV broadcast.

All of this is apparently at no charge to the creator.

As someone that has friends that make their living this way, I found the GNCC allowances to be pretty damn good for the creators.

On the other-hand, the monetary charges for SX seem a bit out of touch...BUT! That's if we even have that story straight..."yet". As Michael says,"We really don't know 'what's what'...yet!" 🙄

You and I come from a group of folks that make money on "residuals" or other forms of payment/proceeds from the content they've created over these past decades. Things like TV commercials and TV/Movie content ranging from stunt-folk to technical specialists. Based on that, I think we both know that some of this is "much ado 'bout nothing" compared to some of the craziness we've seen over the years.🤣

Hope you're kicking ass and I enjoyed the living shit outta your work on Lioness. Season 3 kicked ass...and was BRUTAL. Nice!

Weege just confirmed again that guys like Buttery Films or Matty B will not be affected by this rule change. It’s mostly companies that are sending photographers to take photos to use as advertising for them that aren’t covering the sport/races who will have to pay a fee to shoot the weekend.

Weege is increasingly becoming a complete corporate shill.

He’s always trying to spin everything Feld does in a positive light and how every change is for the better.

He also does this while belittling the fans’ intelligence, something along the lines of “you guys at home just wouldn’t understand” or “here’s what EVERYONE gets wrong” is now said almost every Weege show.

Again, he’s completely leaving out the fact that we will no longer get Matt Burkeen’s raw race footage because that requires you to be on the FLOOR.

This is a complete disgrace because that is 100% the most unique and interesting footage we consume in between races.

Especially because the camera increasingly uses a split cam or drone shot, Burkeens footage is the only chance we get to observe and admire the riders’ technique up close.

It’s a damn shame what Feld is doing.

He's been a corporate shill and it bugs the living hell out of me. with all the "spin jobs" on things in different aspects. I understand not biting the hand that feeds you but there is a line. He crossed that some time ago, i forgot what he was saying on pulpmx but it made me lose a bunch of respect for him and his opinions on things.

Weege is becoming unbearable.  One second he admits to knowing nothing about how a motorcycle works, the next week he’s talking like he’s a mechanic lol.  I’ve seen his egobgroe massively the last year or 2.  He’s locked in with SMX.

It’s one big group and you aren’t a part of it!

They can’t police fan recording on the phone.

As long as you aren’t “re broadcasting or reproducing a production” you can upload fan footage to YouTube and social media, as long as it’s not the ENTIRE RACE, and there’s not a damn thing they can do about it.

"Grow the sport"🤣

This is what happens when $$ starts flowing, even a little bit. Kling-ons try to get in on the score and fuck it up for everybody.  Like flies on shit.  End result, media exposure of a niche sport declines by 80%. Pure genious!

Add stupid gimmicks like SMX and WSMXABC, and hard-core life-long RIDER fans find other things to spend their $$$ on.

On the bright side though.... no more mouth-breathers with flat-brimmed baseball caps turned backwards and every second word "broooo"..... need I mention names? 🤣

What it looks like to me is that Feld is looking to sell the series and is trying to get the numbers looking as big as possible by controlling everything so tightly. If that is not their plan, I do not see how they think that this will be a good thing for the long-term health of Pro SX and MX.

To grow an audience you need to get the sport Infront on new eyeballs. Locking down media access and eliminating 1000's of hours of free  exposer they have been getting is not gonna do that. Having ads that use photos and video from races helps the series as much as it helps the sponsor running the add.

If it costs more to promote a product through the races. Brands will not magically have more advertising budgets so costs will be cut in some way. Riders and teams getting less money or product . And Feld getting even more of the pie.   If they were looking at the long-term growth of the sport , I do not believe they would be doing this.

I just don't see any benefit for the sport.  Increased value of the streaming rights and  short term value of the series itself , short term gains that look good for a company that is trying to inflate its value. And doing that at the cost of growing the audience and  hurting the industry that has supported the series forever.
