This is a great thread!

I guess I could add 2 things here, though at 42 I think I am still far too young to be giving "life advice"...

1. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a trade; my Dad was deadset against us taking any trade (he did and regretted not going to University his whole life though he does pretty well). I'm on the fence, and I've done ok with my Business degree but if my kid asks me I will definitely not steer him one way or the other. Trades are absolutely booming up here in Alberta, Canada right now. DO stay away from Liberal Arts Bullshit or dumb ass stuff like adventure tourism management in college. Technical is the way to go, if you can do it.

2. Not to sound too ominous, but what you do today DOES matter down the road. Want to get drunk most of the time and get shitty marks in college...down the road they use those grades to let you into MBA school. Want to tell your boss to bugger off...down the road you have to explain why you left that job in your next interview. Get all messed up in debt and make late payments on your cards etc. ..down the road your credit sucks and it's tough to get a house etc. These 3 were tough lessons for me to learn.

Good luck & don't sweat it too much at your young age. Grade 10 is too young to know 100% what to do with your life.

Doesn't bother me at all. I have a valued profession. Remember that nursing is quite a bit different than the average retard thinks it is.

As long it's not compounded. I would plead the case to try and save them for you.

I say "Military". I have wished for years that I would have joined the Navy when they were calling every other day 20 years ago. I told the recruiter "I dont like taking orders." He said " well maybe the Navy isnt for you then." I thought I got off the hook easy.

Now I realize how much more living I could have done if I would have just signed up. Yeah, I would have missed out on lots of moto, but I wouldn't have all these crooked bones, and arthritis.

Just throwin it out there kid. You can retire after, I think, 20 yrs! Damn nice benefit right there!

I need to learn how to use the emoticons. I didn't mean "smartass" in a bad way. I was joking.

You do realise, don't you, that - as evidenced by your avatar - you're little more than a horse's arse yourself.

I was only joking.

You don't have to decide right now. But you can screw things up if you blow off the next couple of years. Take a variety of classes and do your best in all of them. My point is to keep your options open for when something starts looking good to you. I didn't decide what I wanted to do until my sophomore year of college and I ended up doing 25 years in a field I loved.

I know this in non-moto but I wont get many replies if I put it there so. My course choices are due on Friday and the school is making a big deal out of it and saying what we choose these next 2 years decides what our future is. I'm only in gr 10. i dont know what I want to be! I sort of want to have my own custom auto buisness but owning a buisness is a risk, i was also thinking of an engineer or dentist, Dr or something, i'd also like something high paying. Money wise i'd like to have enough for an average house maybe more (not a mansion) with lots of land so i can have my own track! and maybe a used lamborghini gallardo. You guys are wise and have lots of knowledge that is why i'm asking you

Thanks Dustin
A finance degree has a good return on investment, any good at softeare? Software engineers are in high demand and have grweat grwoth potential...lok for occupations that cannot be outsourced, and have a good potential for growth..yahoo just did an article ...- (ps I sell drugserr pharmaceuticals was a pre lawe major...stay away from social degrees psychologu, sociaology, anthropology...)

I don't think you need to make definite decisions about what you want to do for a career in 10th grade, but it's a great time to start exploring your options. If you are interested in going to college, I would definitely recommend taking honors, AP, or IB classes for history, English, math, and science. I would also recommend taking a foreign language. These classes will help prepare you for college, possibly give you some college credit, and they look really good on college applications. Use your elective classes to have some fun and learn about things you might not have known you were interested in. Apply yourself to your studies now because this will give you more options when you are deciding on which college you would like to attend.

Try thinking of what your best skills are and how you can apply them to something you are passionate about. Then just start looking at different degrees that are available and what jobs they can apply to. Collegeboard.com was really helpful for me in doing this, but I don't know if they have much information about schools in Canada. If you can come up with a few broad ideas of what you're interested in and feel you would be good at you can really narrow it down over time. Personally, I knew I was good at writing and I wanted to work in the motocross industry when I was in 10th grade, but I didn't know what I could do with that. I just made sure I maintained my grades, explored different options, and over the next two years I narrowed down my options. I chose a school that had several degrees that interested me and now I'm a junior majoring in public relations (which is a growing field fyi) and advertising and it feels like a perfect fit. We start with major-specific classes right away at my school, which I really liked because I didn't have to wait around for two years to decide if I liked my program or not. Just keep your grades up, spend some time reasearching jobs you might not know much about, and realize you can always change your mind if you start working toward a career that you realize isn't really for you. You've got a lot of time to figure it out!

The Marine Corps. We have bikes. Sweet diesel KLX's. Seriously though, nothing wrong with the military, save the air force.

Problem is, Indians, Chinese, Russians, can do it at a 3rd the cost or less. I'm in that business and have enjoyed it at its peak, but unless things change it isn't a path I would suggest to my kids today.

I didn't realize you were from Canada. I know nothing of the school system there. But if it is the same as some systems in Europe, then yes what you take now could indeed shape your future.
France for example has (had?) a very elitist school system. In the mid 70's you had to decide right when entering high school if you were going for a math, math and science, literary, or trade . Once in that path it was pretty much impossible to change mid way. And forget trying to get into the top engineering schools without the math path and a year of prep school.
Contrast that with the US system where you could in theory skip high school, get a GED diploma, take a couple of semesters at a community college to build some grade history, and then go on to a decent university.

Optometry is underrated. Good money to be made there. Or you could just study law. A political science degree (4yrs) followed by a reputable law school(4yrs).

Computers computers computers. Unless you are like me and are completely uninterested in the things. My older brother got average grades all through school, and now, at 28, owns a 46 foot sailboat which he is sailing from california to panama. I think he only worked for 5 real years working for microsoft and ebay.

I, on the other hand, got excellent grades in high school and excellent test scores and then sucked in college because I was only there to please my parents and had no clue what I wanted to do in the future. What I wanted to do in the present was go ride mountain bikes and not go to class. If I had better undergrad scores I could be pursuing anything in graduate school right now, but instead I am starting over another undergrad degree, which I'll tell you is a lot more loaded the second time around. So even if you don't know where you're going, keep working hard, if you do well it wont matter what you're specific course of study was, it will make it way easier to transition to something else.

Thanks so much to everyone! I have learned allot! I chose chemistry physics auto guitar entrepreneurship english math and personal fitness, next year i will take gr 11 bio. I am going to try to keep my options open! The army way sounded good but I wouldn't be able to join because of my health, but im thinking of orthodontist dentist or own my own buisness like a high end car dealership that sells parts and works on them or a custom car shop, or even becoming some sort of engineer or maybe even something in the police force I just don't want to be sitting at a desk all day. But thanks again to everyone! I really appreciate it and it has really helped!
