Moving up to the upper midwest has been awesome for sourcing local, grass fed beef. Very little, if any antibiotics too! The difference in flavor/taste vs. supermarket beef is mind blowing. I don't think I can ever go back to store bought shite.
That rule changed at the beginning of this year. Country of Origin Labeling is voluntary for beef, but if “Product of USA” is used, it has to be born, raised, slaughtered, and processed in the United States.

isn't part of this a result of large numbers of breeder cattle being sold off during the severe droughts out west?
I remember members here posting pictures of long lines at sale barns from people selling off stock they could not feed.
It takes years to rebuild breeding stock to produce calves down the line.
Holding heifers to use for breeding would impact supply early.
I see weaned calves selling for $800-$900 locally. It is getting pretty crazy.
Feed lots are paying $2500-$3000 a head.

If you're rebuilding from established cows, you're looking at around 27 months from knocked up to sale barn.
Ain't nothing happening quickly.
Makes this whole import thing seem more like a campaign for mid-terms than anything else.

Just like Hardly-Ableson -- MADE in China and India, imported (at little or no tariifs) as "machine parts" and assembled in Milwaukee, then sold as flag-waving "USA MADE".
If you don't believe me, go dig a little, as I did.
Start with going to a H-D shop, picking up 100 random iterms and counting how many of them were MADE IN THE USA. -- like I did.
I found 2 when I did that little experiment at the big Hardly shop by Scottsdale airport a few years ago.
Same thing with beef -- export all US beef, then IMPORT form Canada or Argentina or fucken Russia..... fucked up system.
I' read that most of this imported ground beef, will find its way to restaurants/ takeaway chains. So, debatable that it will actually lower prices to those at the supermarkets / butchers.
I was curious to see how long 300 million tons of ground beef would take to use in the USA : I found estimates of it being around 40 /45 days. Heck, that's quick consumption.
