Others don't really care about the color of someone's skin and will watch for the story. Still others will boycott a movie because it doesn't meet their definition of "proper" casting.

As for me, I'd prefer casting choices that make sense for the character involved. Incidentally, there was nothing in The Little Mermaid that specifies the mer-people were white, so why not a black person? Snow White, however, was described in the story as having a pale complexion. It's right in the name of the story! That girl should be white, just because it makes sense.
It works both ways; we should probably cast middle-easterners as Jesus or Lawrence of Arabia, Black people as Zulus, Chinese as Confucius, Mongols as Attila, etc. Hollywood was wrong to whitewash these characters and I feel like the current-day inclusivity in casting is an overreaction to that. 

One way I think we could get over all this would be if the studios would branch out a little bit and tell wider-ranging stories than only ones of European origin. I'd like to see remakes of Ghandi or Lawrence of Arabia with great actors of color. Let's watch a beautiful olive-skinned Greek lady as Helen of Troy, a chilling rendition of Mao-Tse Tung by an actual Chinese actor, or an Arab actress play Sheherezade. 

And finally, it's OK to have a white person play a white character every now and then! 😄
