1983 CR250 (Restore)

After getting run over during a Sponsor's Cup race at Dade City and spending a few days in the hospital, I hung up the "wanna-be pro" boots and traded em in for some "only-for-fun" boots. So I sold my 450 and went back to a 250 2-stroke because its more fun to ride when you don't HAVE to race. (eat shit if you try to argue that).

Pops also got in to the "fun" thing for me and had this beast built so I can go hit some AHRMA vintage races. It's a 1983 CR250 full restore by East Coast Vintage MX. Jason Weaver did a killer job (IMO). Needless to say, I've gone back to 2-strokes in a BIG way and I'll never ride 4-strokes again. Simple life.

I'm definitely digging the 83 model. Great job on that one. I picked up a 83 CR250 a couple years back with the intention of building a nice racer. It is a completely and totally ratted out clap trap though and needs one of everything to be good again. I've rounded up everything to rebuild the engine, new plastics, seat cover and suspension bits but haven't got the time to build it. Got these trick bits for it when it gets going though, NOS Mugen kit and a HRC style works arm.

My 83 250 was one of the bitchenest bikes I ever owned and I have owned dozens, although not as many as newmann.

Geez Albert.....put it together already!

Nice piece CKrider.....I find my 1982 CR250 to be a bit pipey.....the 83's were smoother...and faster...

My beater still is fun though.....complete with fake-out seat cover.....plus, autographed by Chuck Sun...!

Newmann, I have a question you might be able to answer. I've always wondered this and have only seen it on one bike and it was on a modified 83' CR125 that my Dad's buddy had. The bike was a little before my big bike times but I rode it a few times when I was to small for it but still to this day I remember it as being one of the fastest 125's I had ever ridden.

It had a rubber tube that ran from the airbox (a hole drilled into the front of the airbox toward the top) and the other end of the tube ran into the intake boot (in front of the carb), kind of bypassing the carb. Have you ever heard of this or seen another bike like that? Was this a hot setup for that bike or was it a way to make a shitty or undersized carb work? I'm telling you, I often wondered about this because the memory of that bike stuck with me because it was such a screamer.

Unless he had a boost bottle tucked in the airbox, not sure what that setup would have been. My 81 YZ250 has an aftermarket aluminum boost bottle that attaches to the rught side of the fuel tank and runs to the intake boot. I think it hurts more than it helps.

Great Googly Moogly, that 83 makes pee a little bit. And that doesn't happen easily.

I have a soft spot for the early 80's japanese mxers, and that thing is supafine. I'd hate to ride it.

Thanks for the pics of the CR! Brings back a few memories of my first ride on those 83 Hondas. So much better than anything else I had ridden up to that point. Damn... I am calling in sick and going riding tomorrow.

Damn......Bike looks unreal!!! I dont wanna think about how much that cost you to get done! I had an 1985 that was a rocket! With that wacky ATAC valve! Definately a nice piece probobly a rocket too

I was never in the airbox on that bike so I really don't know. I do know that as any 12 year old mesmerized by bikes, I stared at the thing as much as I rode it. Compared to my 60 it was a beast of all beasts and at times someone would start it for me and I'd let the clutch out and run beside it in first gear until I got enough speed to jump on to it. I did ride it more when I was a little older and when I got my first 125 I remembered it being just as fast as my new 89' model.
I don't even know what a boost bottle is so I can only speculate on what one might do. Would a boost bottle fit inside an airbox? I do know what I saw and remember to be true. However, mine and Dad's friend has passed away in the mid 90's and he never told me what it was. I remember asking him a couple times what it was on that bike but instead of telling me he just kidded with me like it was something top secret. Kinda funny I guess. I guess it is his secret. I grew up with this guy being my big brother of sorts, bikes, riding, mechanic, hunting, fishing, kicking ass, getting ass kicked, anything a boy or young man would need to know. He even gave me my first job and I worked for him for two years before he talked me into going to college. But he never told me what that stupid hose was.

The way I remember it, boost bottles were supposed to help throttle response off the bottom.

That's a gorgeous bike, but I gotta say I'm not a big fan on throwing black rims on those or any other bikes from before the black rim era. Gold or silver.

The pipe, though, and shiney red get my eyes of that, though. Smile

Devil's Ridge is a fun track, hard pack clay ( the kind they make bricks out of) Just hope it doesn't rain.
