There is absolutely nothing wrong with a 450 four stroke motor. They will last many hours as long as the guy riding the bike isn't some dufess that can't perform simple routine maintenance.

They also don't do proper maintenance and expect bikes, 2 or 4 stroke to not fail. It's just that 2 strokes are more forgiving with lack of maintenance that's all.
I would totally agree with that.

jmar allow me to say that I'm not for or anti 4-stroke. I ride because I love to ride. i have chosen to go back to a 2-stroke. A 93 CR250 and an 04 CR500AF made out of a 99 CR500 and 450 Honda. I sold the motor that had been rebuilt and had 12 hours on it and the new owner was thrilled because of the price. I gave it away because it helped fund my AF project. What am I going to do, make a 450 52 hp weedwhacker out of it? There is no doubt that the 4-strokes make it easier to go faster, but everything carries a price. What you gain on 1 end, you take off the other. However, I personally am not that worried about my speed. I'm more concerned with less maintenance time and more saddle time, as well as having the most fun. That for me comes from a 2-stroke. Trust me, at 48 yrs old, plenty of hotshot 20 yr olds can go railing by me on a 250F and I could care less. But I do know when I throw a set of rings into my 500 at the end of the 1st season and mic the piston and bore at the end of the 2nd season to see what it needs, the 250Fs will need more than that. As will a 450. But that is their choice to ride. Machine makes a valid point, and you know he does. Not everyone has the skills or wallet to support the 4-strokes but they will anyway, and pay the price. The "war of strokes" on this site is getting pretty old though.

Ya I probably did overreact a bit to your post but I had just gone through all of this last weekend with some jackass on a KTM450sx telling me how fast his 4 stoke was and I was riding a smaller track up here at a local riding area so I offered to race him right then and there, while he has his brand new gear on without a spec of dirt on it, all custom race graphics with his name and number imprinted and his answer was oh I just had my top end rebuilt and I'm just out breaking it in, It turned out that he was a B rider that was a total rich kid living off mommy and daddys trust fund, so ya I guess your post hit a sore spot. Next time I'm in AZ I would love to hook up with you and do some riding. I'll let you ride the YZ285, I think I actually posted 280 before my mistake, I'm 100% sure you will have a blast on it.

it's all good, I don't hate 2 strokes, I just don't believe they are making a come back.

I think it will be years before the tide turns back to 2 strokes if they ever do.

My 09 450 blew on the 3rd ride.... I religously changed the oil,oil filter, and air filter after every ride. I'm a mechanic so its safe to say I know my way around an engine as well. That being said, there was no preventive maintence that would have stopped my engine failure. I had a valve spring break, which dropped the valve, when the piston hit it it broke off the entire top right corner of the cylinder head, taking out both cams. The impact with the valve also managed to size the piston, taking out the cylinder, which broke the rod . The rod went through the transmission breaking EVERY gear and mainshaft, before going out the backside of the cases. . I was no where near the rev limiter, nor had the bike ever been ridden to that point to "float" the valves. I spent 3 months fighting with Yamaha to warranty the engine, which they did not.

I rode a sponsored 250F in 2003 that had problems on a weekly basis, and usually blew up every 6 weeks( The mechanic overseeing the maintence is very well respected so I know it wasnt him, and I'll spare posting his name). At the end of 02 I was getting help from Vertimati, getting bikes and a fulltime mechanic. After 3 months we were at the point where myself and Daryl Youngblood( the othe rider) were having engines overnighted from Italy b/c they were blowing as fast as the mechanic could change then. The longest we got an engine to last was 15min, and I barely managed to finish 4 motos in the Florida Gold Cup series that year.

I dont know, maybe its me, but I have never had good luck with 4 strokes... I am actually quite a bit faster on the 2 stroke, so I will stick with them. Hopefully I will be able to buy new bikes untill I am done riding. My son will also never ride a 4 stroke, atleast untill he is paying for his own bikes and parts.

obviously that was a manufacturers defect. They happen in two strokes too ya know. One of my buddies 09 ktm 200sx broke a powervalve ruining the cylinder,piston, crank, and of course the trans bearings. But it was just over a grand to fix gotta love those ktm's.

Not to beat a dead horse but. I broke the transmission in my YZ250 3 times. I guess that 2nd gear was weak.

I blame 2 strokes for that.

No, I made that up just like my manufactured hate of the 2 stroke. I'm near 50 yrs old , I grew up on 2 strokes you don't think I like em ?

I'm just saying at this point they are not coming back in any real capacity.

I haven't taken to my RMZ450- it's pretty depressing. One of my first rides on it was at the Baltimore Arenacross. Wow. I kept stalling it until I realized I had to have a finger on the clutch every second.
Dislikes: My 450 is incredibly hard to start. This bike is way too heavy. Can't ever get used to the steering (front end seems to push). I just can't get smooth on this bike, and i get way more tired than I do on the two-stroke. After every crash the front end seems to be way tweaked. It just feels heavy and it beats me up, probably because I don't have the speed.
I'm hardly riding right now because I need hip surgery, but I am thinking hard about a KTM 250SX.
The only thing I really like about this bike is it is a rocket off the start. I think 450s are easier to ride for big strong dudes (Vet riders all seem to be built like power lifters these days). For a skinny dude like myself, not so much.
Not a diatribe against 4-banger, but they haven't worked out for me very well.

Try a KTM 300XC. Best of both worlds (power down low, for starts and light weight) and a little E button.
