Only if you define failure as anything but a win and think in black and white terms. As Hunter said after losing the sx title; he feels no shame because he knows he gave it 100%. A rookie getting a podium or top 5 is hardly considered a failure, and there is a difference between wanting your guy to win and enjoying it when someone else doesn’t win.
The anti Deegan crowd seems to get particular joy if Deegan doesn’t win (and some would probably enjoy seeing him get injured) as if their self worth depends on him losing.

I'm the first one to subscribe to the hypothesis that Deegan brings in some eyeballs and hype, but too much of it is for the completely wrong reasons and i would prefer to see and hear none of it in the sport i love.

I'm pretty sure Jett threw the first blow when he called Deegan a punk on the Gypsy podcast. This is what started it all. Not smart for Jett IMO, because Deegan doesn't need to be as fast as Jett to take a championship away from him.

Deegan will improve so no one is celebrating 5th. We just aren’t investing so much effort into whether rider a wins or loses like you are. Especially after only two practice sessions.

Hopefully Hunter can access that speed early in the race. The class is full of guys that can get out front and manage a lead and others that will be difficult to pass on the way to the front. Jett about where I expected. Jorge looks uncanny fast like peak Jett, but whereas Jett seems to leap skip around the track, Prado looks like he's all about forward momentum. Justin Cooper higher than I expected but I should know better by now. Marchbanks looking good, I feel like the Kawi platform might actually suit his riding style and weight. Deegs qualifying session probably made for some good pictures at least lol.
Nothing else surprising me much. I've learned not to set expectations with Eli. If he's looking like retirement material just wait a month and he'll be gnarly again. If he's on top, just wait a month and he'll have you scratching your head again.
He generates drama to drive clicks to get paid. I'm surprised some people on here haven't figured that out yet.
I also recall Jett imitating Deegan's "tongue out" antics which could have been back then, but that was more of an indirect jab. I'm talking about directly and publicly talking shit on each other, like what happened on the gypsy podcast and thereafter.
For Deegan, as a rookie, obviously a top 5 would be a great showing.
But, when you're walking around press day wearing a shirt with handwritten "RIP Jett" "prone to ankle injuries" "I heart Dylan (Jett's girl)" "How to lose the girl" "something about the dog pound" ... and you're a full 2 seconds off your one-way rival, it's definitely not a good look. Especially when Jett is fresh off the injury you're poking fun at.
He's definitely successful at playing the villain! Just my $0.02
