Its seems so weird that Dungey basically dominated everything last summer while Villopoto sat on the couch getting healed up and then at the first race where they are both on the track RV looked like he still had Dungeys number.

I have a feeling that Stewy may have both of their numbers by round 5.

I'm not sure why you think anyone had anyone's number. Dungey's laptimes were essentially equal to both RV and James Stewart. Had Dungey pulled a holeshot and gotten out front early, he would have likely won. A couple of years ago, Stewart would have won the race coming from behind, and in 2011 with the amount of speed up front, all he could climb to was a third. If Stewart holeshot he would have likely won. Ryan Villopoto got the start and came out on top...the best man won last night. But don't discredit Dungey because his speed is there and it is, for all practical purposes, equal to RV's and Stewart's.

After seeing James easily pass RV in the heat race, I think everyone will be in trouble if James gets a decent start. But the season is long and the stage is set. I'm looking forward to some great racing.

Spot on. RV didnt show some speed that couldnt be matched. RD was putting a half second a lap on him. Between Bubba, RD, and Villo it's who gets a better start.

Who impressed you the most? Even as a Dungey guy, I admit James still seems to have the most speed but the gap isn't huge and he will def have days were he is untouchable. Will him and Villo throw any races away though because Dungey won't

Heh, if RD was putting "a half a second a lap on him" then he would've caught and blown past Villopoto in the 17 laps he spent chasing him. He ran the pace of RV, but I wouldn't be as ignorant to say he was faster.

There is no denying how the future races will pan out: Unless RV, RD, Canard, or Reed get the holeshot and IMMEDIATELY start checking out - there is a slim chance that Stewart WONT win.

The fact of the matter is, the big four (RV, RV, Canard, Reed) will need to ride a near perfect race if their going to beat the unstoppable one (Stewart.)

Nobody has anyones numbers right now besides JS7.

What race did you see. When Dungey got into 2nd RV was already 6sec away. With open track he layed down a couple laps and gained a sec. So don't think RV has some ungodly speed and oh yeah Stewart? He was in third for a good chunk of that race and couldn't catch the Ryan's. He's not a god anymore because he has actual competition. Mike Alessi isn't in the top five anymore and that's who James would have been passing 2 years ago on his way to the front. Every guy in the top 5 is gonna put up a fight and if he doesn't holeshot it's not a cinch he wins anymore

RD ate shit twice last year which could have easily led to a season ending early........at san fran he is lucky he didnt break both heels........they all have the ability to throw it away, dungey is no different and he will have to push it this year if he wants to win so crashing comes into play even more now............no cruising around for a #1 plate this year for dungey

I'm not sure what race some of you guys were watching, but RV pulled 6 seconds on Dungey in the first 10 laps, and pulled 7 seconds on Stewart in the first 10 laps. Go back, watch the race again, and keep tabs on the timing and scoring up at the top of your screen.

No need, there are laptimes right here.

There were a few more laps where RV was a bit quicker, and some where Dungey was faster. Their average overall times were pretty close with the nudge going to RV:

Ryan Dungey: 1:00.012

Ryan Villopoto: 59.894

In real life terms, that is such a small gap that it hardly makes a difference, it's 0.118 of a second quicker, average. If RV maintained that pace the entire race, he'd win by about 2.36 seconds.

That means that whoever got the holeshot and made a little bit of a gap wins the race. That's exactly what RV did.

By the way, Stewart had a quicker average laptime than both RV and Dungey.

Hey dipshit, you really think that if Dungey kept that pace he would have won? Villopoto was in race management mode. He checked out, got a good lead and MANAGED the race. How many times did MC do the same thing? How many times did we hear that this guy or that guy was going to wax MC next week cause he closing in hard at the end of the race. ........only to have MC win next week...and the next...and the next.....he was master at managing the race.

Lap times are basically useless. Didn't Roczen dominate practice? How'd that work out for him?

true that, yet he will gain more confidence through the season and be able to run lap times like JS.

Laptimes tell us a lot. They tell us what pace the riders are going, who is riding the fastest, who needs to be a bit faster, when a rider is his fastest, when a rider is slower, and so on. The nice thing about looking at laptimes is that we can see how the rider's are doing throughout the race. Therefore, saying that RV was in "management mode" comes up a bit short as an excuse since throughout the race, James Stewart was riding virtually the same pace as RV, and was passing people left and right to get up front. In other words, James was probably pushing it a bit to get as far to the front as he could and him and RV had similar laptimes.

Now, James made quick work of RV in the heat race so for you to claim that RV was in management mode, we would also have to accept the following premises:

1) That RV had more speed on tap if he needed it.

and (this follows from 1)

2) That Dungey and Stewart are slower than RV.

I don't see either 1 or 2 as very reasonable. RV was more than likely not in management mode since he had Dungey and Stewart behind him (Dungey only a few seconds). He won the race because he got the holeshot and rode the best race. Last night, RV was the best man. But he failed to gap Dungey, not because he was cruising around in management mode, but because Dungey was pretty much equal to RV's speed and RV could not pull away. At the level these guys ride, if they can pull away, they do pull away...especially earlier in the race if possible.

By the way, the laptimes I provided are main event laptimes so they are very relevant.

What makes you think RV was riding conservative? If RV was riding conservative, then he can blow Stewart and Dungey out of the water at full speed since Dungey and Stewart were pushing it to get up front. Do you honestly believe that RV is that much faster (especially after seeing Stewart win the heat race)? I'll give credit where credit is due, RV was simply the best man last night. But you guys are pushing it with the idea that RV was holding back.

RV has Dungey covered when running full steam ahead and will give Stewart everthing he can handle when doing so . I did not say he will blow JS out of the water . RV got a good start , rode a smart conservative race and had an easy win because RD and JS were back in the pack , he has a lot more steam in the pressure cooker when needed . RV was off the bike a long time with a real bad injury , came back in shape and rode smart last night . We are in for some great racing when they all get a good start and running up front . A-1 jitters are out of the way and looking forward to next week .

I say Villopoto and Dungey were both in race management mode, Dungey is smart and a 2nd is as good as a 1st if you can just cruise, the only one puching was Stewart but hell he always rides over his head, he just got lucky and didn't crash this time.

It can be disputed that RV has Dungey covered. From last night at A1, it seemed like RV, Dungey, and Stewart were pretty much even. I'm willing to bet that if Stewart or Dungey got the holeshot that we would be discussing a different scenario today. I don't think any of the aforementioned riders were riding conservatively last night. RV was only a few seconds ahead of Dungey; that's hardly enough of a gap to ride conservatively. He rode the best race since he won, but this nonsense about him backing it off and having more in the tank is misguided. It seemed that if anyone has a bit more, it would be Stewart who seemed to get by RV with relative ease in the heat race.
