So Dems in California are panicking because two Republicans are leading (or close to leading) in polling. CA has a "jungle" primary system so the top two vote-getters in the primary proceed regardless of party, leaving open the possibility that two Republicans (Chad Bianco and Steve Hilton) will be running for Governor. The Dem party is very splintered so there is a risk they will split the vote too much.

I know a lot of very liberal people that are fed up with the Dems. So the tide might be shifting. This is the state that gave us Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon, after all. Katie Porter has a toxic brand and I doubt CA will elect a white male billionaire whose main issue is climate (Steyer).

I will go find Gavin Newsom and laugh in his face like Jim Carrey in Liar Liar if the ballot only contains Republicans. The Dems have been using dishonest means like this for years to effectively shut out conservatives from any influence over state politics.

If the House remains a Dem supermajority (highly likely since it is California), how much can a Republican governor actually get done?

It would of course be a ridiculously adversarial relationship, but no laws pass without the Governor's signature so there's that. You would see the Legislature going full obstructionist and trying to win the public back through a culture war that they are currently losing very badly. Californians are absolutely getting sick of getting screwed on taxes, cost of energy, housing and food, and all the social ills that leftists have brought upon the state.

But a Republican winning CA governor would give the party a massive political and social victory. The governor also appoints the heads of many agencies like CARB, CPUC, CEC etc. so that would create a huge policy swing on things like net-zero programs, climate and environmental policies.

Consider that the core political issue for Dems, especially state-level politicians in CA, is openly supporting illegal immigrants. Legal immigrants are some of the most anti-illegal-immigration people you will find (because they spent years and thousands of dollars to do it the right way), so that's why the Dems are losing support with "people of color." Latinos are a huge block in CA and the Dems are also losing them with all their anti-religious rhetoric. You'd think they would be smart enough to see that hating on the U.S.A. and religion is a terrible political strategy, kind of like favoring criminals over working-class taxpayers, but these people have disappeared in their ideological bubbles.

Hopefully nothing. The harder people try to fix things, the more broken it becomes. Deadlock govt ftw.

Curious if any of you Cali folks are hearing of or know anything about Independent candidate Louis Hermes (hope I spelled his name right)?  He is a semi regular guest on a podcast I listen to regularly.  Seems to be an interesting guy with some common sense.
