Off-Road/AT type Truck Tire prices....DAMN!

The tires I run on my off-road rigs get changed out quite often. I run Yokohama X-ATs on all things 35" and 37" in Baja. Yokohama is part of the Baja HQ/Monster Energy #16 Trophy Truck program and we get a really good deal on them.

But, then I saw what tires like this go for on-line: DAMN!

Looked up the Yokohama's as a 315/70R17 (the Yoko's are a real 35" tire at this size) I found them from some no-name joint on eBay for $341.

At most tire outlets that are on-line: $388-401.

The bottom-line: it's easily $2K or more for 5 tires. DAMN!

I'd recommended these to friends and had heard they were great tires and cost less than the BFGs...KM3...and are no where near as noisy. I've run KM3s. Good tire, pretty good flat protection...pretty pricey.

But, the point: as I talked to friends that buy this stuff...they're paying $400 to $500 and even $600 for a tire! Oh...and...$750 for some of the 39" tires!!!

Damn!

I'm now a bit more appreciative of the tires we get.

Tire prices are tied to oil prices. Hope you bought tires today Manny. The prices are about to jump.

I run 33's.

Mickey Thompson baja boss M/T's

285/65/18.

Noisier than I'd like for the road, but perfect for the offroad terrain around here.

I've gotten well over the 50,000 mile warranty mileage with still very good tread depth left.

But I'll still be looking at getting new ones soon.

I have a spare on a method wheel that's never been used.  So I'll buy three and use one of the current tyres for the spare.

Like everything else, the price rarely ever comes back down.20240706 084239 0.jpg?VersionId=ZEnJYss0A

They're swapping out tires as needed on Monday for another Baja/Rip run next week. With the support we get, I'm in good shape. My post was about the sticker shock I got when I looked this stuff up. $2-$3K for tires. DAMN!

Just put tires on the van...with the help we get...$500 for 4. So, I'm stoked.

We get some amazing support from Baja Designs, too. That's another segment where I had no idea how pricey stuff is. But, I do know this...I've made a lot of night-time miles and won plenty of races with their lights.

I've got BFG KO2's on the turd, (From Baja HQ) they're not quite ready but will be soon. You know I change the camper tires every 5 years just cause. They usually have lots of tread left I just don't like old tires on the camper. But I'm sure they'd be fine on the empty TRD though, might be worth looking into 18" rims for the yota and rotate them from the camper to the yota every 5 years. According to the tape measure they're about the same height but the dodge tires but are wider. Maybe offset rims on the TRD ?  I own a sawzall and lots of files and grinders lol

Dodge- LT285/65R18  Load range E

TRD LT 285/70R17  Load range C

I don't care if the heavier tires change the way the yota drives, for 2K I'll get used to it. It's slow and gets shitty mileage anyway 😐😄

A lot of rigs around here run Coopers.

Both AT and MT's.

Cheaper than BFG's, Falken's, or M.T.'s.

Wildpeak and Nitto AT's are very popular around here. Especially on work trucks.

Been awhile since I've used offroad tires.  Wranglers holding up well at 15k.

Twenty five years ago they would have been cupped like crazy.

Much quieter than the old day's too!

Nitto’s and, Toyo’s are big here. Seems everyone runs them.

Personally, General Grabber ATX’s have always served me well. My last two trucks had them.  My tires on the current truck are what it came with. Good Year Wranglers. When they wear out, I’ll switch over to General’s. No point swapping them out yet since they only have 3,300 miles on them.

For pickup tires I stick to Nittos, Toyos, or Mickey Thompson’s. I ran a set of Mickey Thompson Baja boss in a 37x13.5 size from almost new(56 mi.) to 71K. I was pleasantly surprised with how long they made it on a full size 1 ton pickup truck with a toolbox and 110 gallon tank in the bed that is full more often than not. I procrastinated too long and couldn’t get them in the time frame I needed, so I ended up with nittos this go around. They were stupid expensive, but they all are! IMG 2774 4

Nope. It was about the realization that it’s THOUSANDS of dollars for tires nowadays when it wasn’t that long ago that you could get’em for under a grand.

I’m guessing most in here are pretty wise about shopping for this stuff. As we’ve seen from the posts, these guys are buying good tires…and thier apparently knowledgeable on how expensive it’s getting….especially those with 37s or bigger.

There’s more than a few in here that get thier vehicles form the OEMs for a smoking deal, too. That’s the ultimate hook-up!

I love tires. Always thought they were expensive, as I grew up and made more money, the tires got more expensive. Lame!

Is that fastener all the way thru the tread? I’d take a guess that it isn’t…?

On the 2025 Rip to Cabo…I put a 6 millimeter wrench thru a brand new X-AT…plugged it and forgot about it. Went over my Rip notes a few weeks ago…”Wait a second, that tires still on there…?” So, that’s the set that’s getting replaced (replaced in pairs when the remaining tires are still fairly new).

Plugged it 600 miles into a 2,700 mile Baja trip and forgot about it. Oh, and…I kept the wrench. Keep it in the console for good luck! 🤣

Such is life. Everything be expensive these days. spending 10-15$ for 12oz of a decent coffee bean chaps my ass.  Not excited to see where gas goes with all of the fuckery going on.

Obviously not for Baja use but there are some decent quality consumer level tires these days that don’t break the bank like a Ko2 for example.

They are always all the way through! I got this plug gun, it’s my favorite. Used it maybe 6 times now. Seems to work well there’s atleast 4 plugs still rolling around no problems.

I bought the Cooper Discoverer Road + Trail At tires almost exactly one year ago from Discount Tire and really like them. They were $214/tire. Today they are $230.

After reading rave reviews for the Falken Wildpeak AT 3 I bought some for my Chevy Silverado a few years ago...hate them. Noisy, wearing out fast, square and hard

It You guys are surprised at Tire prices, look at how much wheel prices have gone up! Since 2022 they are 5 times as much for some brands/models. Its crazy .

I feel like every time I look up a wheel/tire package for a SXS the prices have gone up. Up until around 2022 , prices were similar and then stuff started to go up so that sometimes the dealer cost was more than the retail was a few months before.

One of my wholesale suppliers for powersports parts told me that tires are made 6 months to a year before they are shipped to the wholesalers .  I'm not sure if its similar for car and truck tires. Crazy how most things are made a year before they come to market and their pricing can be impacted by current market conditions.

Word of caution if you buy your tires from Ebay, or a random 3rd party, make sure you have a shop that will install them for you. Most shops won't install tires from another vendor because of liability. It turns into a big PITA trying to beg a tire shop to help you out.

As for tires, I'm pretty much done with BFG. The last set I had were loud, overpriced, and ended up cracking on the sidewall before they needed replacement. We park my wife's Land Cruiser in the garage and only really use it around town, so the cracking was a big surprise to me. We ended up going with a set of Coopers and they are much quieter, and ride softer with the correct tire pressure. I had to run the BFG's at a lower pressure to be more comfortable on the road.

Here's the obligatory pic for attention, with said Coopers.

I took a chance on a set of Atturo Trail Blade MTs and love them. Came off Nitto Terra Grapplers, no complaints here, especially for the price. Not sure how many miles I have on them but they’ve been wearing well.

That's a very nice looking ride.

The 4x4 shop I've dealt with has changed owners, and lost their good techs.

So I'm having a tough time finding a local tyre shop that can get my M.T.s.

One local, mom and pop tyre shop, said I can find them online and have them shipped to their shop. 😃

Talk about acquiring a loyal customer  !!!

America's/Discount Tire has been reasonable to deal with lately. It's a chain, but they take good care of you and have a wide selection of tires.

Straight up, I went with them to support the sport as they were Chad Reeds major sponsor.  Been mostly happy ever since.

I'm running Falken Wildpeak AT3's and not sure I love them.  Pretty quiet for the first 10k or so but seemed like overnight they got noisy.  I rotate them every 5k too.  Seem to be wearing pretty good but I am getting some cupping which is what is causing the noise.  Work well in snow and rain at least.

As for mounting, I got these direct from Falken and tried Discount Tire as I normally buy from them and they wanted crazy money. I talked to my guy at Dunlop (same company as Falken) and asked who he used and he said the dealer.  So I called the Lexus dealer since they are close to me and they did them for like $30 a wheel or something crazy like that.  I was shocked.

Walmart mounts "carry in" tires for $11 each ( no parts included) and charges $3  each for a service pack that has a vale stem and other " parts" needed for mounting.  The quality of service may be better or worse depending on the location. Some will do bigger off road tires and some will not. So its best to call around before counting on them being able or willing to mount the tires You buy.

I've been using a customer of mine for Truck and car tires. Mytireguys.com . They come right out to You in most of Ma and RI as of the last time I spoke with the owner. He did say they are working on other states as he expands. But he's still relatively smaller with about 6 or so service crews last time I talked with him. But completive price wise and super easy to deal with. You call or email and figure out what tire and when. Then when he gets there You do a quick walk around the vehicle and then sign off on the work and price. Then You go back to work, or back in to relax in Your house while they install the new tires. After You do another walk around and sign and pay. Super easy and takes about a half hour of Your time total if You chat a little bit.  So much better than dropping off wheels and going back to grab them then installing Yourself. Or waiting for a couple hours at a tire shop while they install and often try and hit You up for extra's.
