2 stroke cylinder plating

Edited Date/Time 2/12/2026 2:46pm

If a brand new cylinder has port work done, will it need to be replated?  I’m trying to decide if I send off my used cylinder for porting work and have the Nikasil redone, or just go the new cylinder with porting route and have my used cylinder as back up.

The plating won't chip off if it is good quality, in good condition, and if the guy doing the port work cleans up his edges.

When you send a cylinder out for plating, they chamfer the port edges after they strip and re-plate the bore.
That will slightly change the port timing and geometry.

I'd ask the guy doing your engine work for his recommendation and thoughts on the subject.

I wouldn’t expect oem plating to flake during porting

I had boyko send mine to get plated by Powerseal. He did the chamfering and said he was impressed with their work. Ive seen some very questionable work from the top two plating companies, so getting it sent out by a tuner seemed like the best option. I don’t see them sending cylinders to a tuner with half ass plating/repairs done

Another thing to keep in mind.. I had a well known tuner claim my cylinder will need to be plated because of the extensive grinding he does. He charged me for the plating, but that work was never done. He just ran a hone through it so be careful.

Thanks for the replies.  I also sent an email to Tom Morgan racing just after I started this topic. He can do either new or used cylinder, and it is very rare to chip OE Yamaha plating.

Tom & Milenium Technologies r in the same buildings I heard.  I drove my cylinder down to Plymouth Wi. A guy talked me into running a Wossenger piston Very high quality with a coating.  Clearances r very tight.  Buy a package of 5 pistons & I think they where aprox  a 100 bucks.  I got a spare ring too, I usually don’t do that but the prices r getting up there.  The plating puts a diff color ovr ports , get plating done then porting . Then u can see your shiny porting.  Plating is pretty expensive now.  I hit near by Sheboygan & check out Lake Mi. Beaches on the way back.

Last year i had a 2023 yz125 with very low hours chip a large section of OE plating at the exhaust port. It is rare, but it happens
