Throttle Tamer

Who all makes throttle tamers? G2 makes a good looking aluminum one, but I like clamp on grips. I've found a guy that 3d prints ones for ODI, but I'm not sure about durability of 3d printed plastics. You think ODI, Renthal, Pro Taper or even OEMs would offer different throttle cams.

Which bike is it for?

If it’s a four stroke Motion Pro has a Rev3 system for most popular bikes, there should be a more mild reel available in that kit.

As for the durability of the 3D printed part, it would really depend on material and print settings.  Do you have a link to share so I can take a look?

Doesnt seem like it would be a big seller, the demographic is people that use lock on grips, AND want a slower throttle pull, AND then it's model specific.  Selling less than ~100 per year isnt going to be worth the investment for most companies.

Beta 450 RX did come with 5 throttle cams, but I dont think they are compatible with lock on grips.

Which is kinda silly, people will spend hundreds on head work, engine mounts, and exhaust but a throttle cam can do more for a bikes engine and chassis character for way less money and if you had multiple options you could really dial it in.

Well as you stated, G2 already makes it, and you also get a more durable throttle tube and grips with better cushion and vibration absorption.

Based on how glossy the parts look in photos, I’m going to guess it’s likely printed from PETG which would be a good choice since it’s UV and chemical resistant.  Can’t say for certain, but that’s my best guess.  That said though the print quality doesn’t seem great to me, that’s just my honest opinion based on the photos I’m seeing.  If you have a four stroke bike I would highly recommend the Rev3 system from Motion Pro, it’s compatible with ODI lock-on grips and has a tamer reel that you’re looking for.

The motion pro rev3 looks interesting, though unless I'm reading it wrong two issues.

1/ it's a linear change

2/ it's accelerating the throttle response, not taming it ( the bigger the number the less throttle you need for 100% throttle body ), yellow is 50mmIMG 0141 2

Yeah, I'd rather the first 1/2 be less aggressive, then stock over the last 1/2 with a little bit more twist required.

Has anyone toyed around with using different oems cams to see the difference? Was just wondering about that as i read this.

That's correct, the larger the reel the less twist it takes to get to full throttle.  In this case in order to get a less aggressive throttle cam you would use the 35mm, although at only a 1.5mm difference in diameter results might be negligible for your specific bike.

It's funny how different riders have different preferences, I put one of these on my 450 and put the 50mm reel just as a test and pretty convinced I would hate it, but as it turned out I absolutely loved not having to twist the throttle as far and now absolutely swear by it.  A stock throttle feels like I have to twist my wrist forever now that I'm used to the quick turn haha.

Yes, they are pretty noticeable.

My 500xcf was built with a slow response throttle reel, my wrists are a little crunchy/arthritic so I went to a quick turn reel and it’s a better fit for me.

The G2 throttle tamer on my 350 made a huge difference, gives you more precision in that first half or so and then it ramps up aggressively. Only small down side I noticed if you are going up a faster rough hill and the throttle is in that transition zone it can feel a little jerky.

Gluing/safety wire grips isnt that big of a deal, more cushioning too.

I'm the same I've always preferred a shorter throttle pull on four strokes. I tend to ride high in the RPMs and my wrist range of motion sucks so I find myself dropping my shoulder trying to get full throttle with some cams.

I've ridden for 7 years and raced the last two seasons of hare scrambles on my 19 450fx with the stock throttle cam without issue. My new 24 450fx spools up so fast though that it's really twitchy in that first 1/4 throttle, I like everything else more than the older version except for that first 1/4 throttle. I installed one of the 3d printed cams yesterday and it makes a huge difference in the 1/4 to 1/2 throttle range. It was surprisingly harder to pull the front wheel because I had to twist the throttle farther than expected. The first 1/4 throttle though is still more jerky than either of my 19's. I'll have to play with the tuning app and see if I can smoothen it out some more.

I've glued grips for 30 years, never safety wired them though. The convenience of clamp on grips and not having to remove the glue from the throttle tube and handlebar is what I like about them. I have a few bikes that none of the clamp on grip companies make cams for, so I'm still gluing those.
