Almost two years after deciding he didn’t want to ride anymore, my son decided he wants to ride again. He’s set on riding only desert until he gets better and faster at which point he will go back to riding at the tracks again. He’s already planning which tracks he wants to go to when that time comes.
Why we decided to go with an 85 with him being 9. Well, basically he’s a giant at 5ft tall. Much like me at his age, he’s outgrown 65’s and 110’s, but his ability has catching up to do. We were torn between a used small wheel TTR125 or new/newer KLX140/CRF125F but the TTR’s were all thrashed and everyone wants way too much money for them and when it came to the KLX/CRF’s I couldn’t justify paying almost $6k otd for a bike he may not want to ride after a year anyways. So I started looking at 85’s, specifically YZ’s and RM’s because they haven’t changed so parts are plenty and we have a great relationship with a Yamaha/Suzuki dealer. Found an 09 RM85L on marketplace for $800 with all kinds of extra parts including a second engine, multiple heads, flywheel, plastic, seals, bearings, etcetera. Asked the guy if he’d take $650 and sure enough as long as I picked it up by Monday night he’d do it.
So my son, my dad and I jumped in the truck Sunday afternoon and made the 2 hour drive to go check it out. We already knew the bike didn’t run in its current state, but when we got there the thing had all kinds of trick parts, one motor was a 112cc done by PR2 and the other by PCM I believe. We always plan to completely rebuild any bike we buy used(only buy used 2 strokes) just for peace of mind and to prevent any potential safety issues and we just enjoy it and we always rebuild them back to stock. My son sits on the bike and even with the 19 front and 16 rear, he can still hold the bike up and touch if he leans slightly to one side. He immediately falls in love with it. So my dad and I go over every inch we possibly can, looking for cracks in the frame, any sort of issues on the outside of the cases, checking for play in the swing arm, nothing! All looks great, so we take the bike.
I’ve already found a guy with a bunch of new OEM RM85 parts that I need including small wheels, cylinder, head, crank and pistons. We didn’t get back until 9pm Sunday evening, but that didn’t stop my son from asking me if we can start working on the bike ASAP! We agree Monday night after I get home from work, we will start pulling it apart. And we did just that. The PR2 motor will be the one we keep and rebuild as a 112, while the other motor will be rebuilt completely stock. Goal is to have it ready to go by mid January for a desert trip, but if my son has it his way it will be done by Christmas 😂 It won’t be a flashy build by any means, but it will be clean and done correctly. I tried selling my son on the restyle kit, but he said no way and loves how it looks from the factory.
Couple photos so far

Nice job sir!
Awesome!
Enjoy with your son, riding & garage!✌️
Absolutely will.
When it comes time to rebuild the motor, the plan is for my dad, my son and I to all work on it together. This bike will be special for that reason and I don’t think it will ever leave the family.

Build it to match Dads 450. Father and Son matching Suzuki's would look cool! Somebody at one time spent some serious coin on that little bike, nice find!!!
That's so rad, enjoy it. My girl is only 5 (and tiny) but I want to get a little project bike and go through it with her at some point.

Sorry for no updates on this. Not a whole lot going on other than we've gathered parts for it. Ended up coming across someone not too far from us that had small wheels that still have the stock tires unused on them. Talked to them just through text, they ended up having a ton of parts for RM85's since his kid rode for Suzuki a few years back. He had a brand new OEM head, cylinder, piston, crank, gaskets, seals etc. My dad and I go to meet the guy at his house to pick up everything and turns out it's a long time friend of my dad that we hadn't seen in years. Ended up getting the wheels along with everything else plus an extra head and 112 crank for $350. About a week later my dad asked him if he had OEM cases, sure enough he did and we grabbed those for a steal as well.
Currently waiting for all of the case bearings and then this thing will start going back together. She's basically going to be a completely brand new motor when it's done. In the meantime I'm slowly, little bits at a time, getting the frame cleaned up, lubing front and rear, grabbing other non motor parts that we need for the bike. Hopefully I'll have some photos soon.
Ya I’ve been really bad about photos so far on the chassis side of things. Spent a few hours yesterday and another 3 hours today cleaning and greasing everything. Thankfully whoever greased the headset bearings and all of the linkage/swingarm stuff last really did a good job. Cleaned all bearings up and greased them all back up. Also spent a ton of time yesterday and today with a wire wheel on the dremel cleaning what was almost a half inch thick dirt, grease and chain lube from the swingarm, frame and linkage. It was so bad I actually had to grab a flathead screwdriver to chip away because it was so bad. Everything came out pretty good though. Not perfect, but good enough.
As you can see, this thing has a few really cool parts on it. RG3 clamps, PR2 linkage and it’s got some other stuff that came in the boxes we were given with the bike. I hate the bar risers and would love to find the top bar mount for these 7/8” RG3 clamps. No luck so far though. At this point, just waiting for the motor to get back together and some other small parts here and there that we need. At some point we will be doing plastic and graphics but want to everything back together and running before we do that. Hopefully not more than a few more weeks.
This thing brings me back to racing minis in New England. All the fast kids were on Kawi and Suzuki in the NESC series. Me and one other kid had the sick 94 YZ and probably shoulda been waxing them but were fighting for 5th thru 10th usually.. 😅
