Yours, or bought? I saw at least one company doing such things, but the company name has slipped from my tiny Bear Brain.
I've done many, many AFs since '97. A variety of my own, full solutions, and, using pre-made kits. That, I always find faults with / have to rectify problems that they have. Nowadays I'm so 'over' AFing, that I just tell the usual one or two 'mates' I still get cornered into by to do conversions for each year, to buy a kit.
If bolt in kits are available, for certain engine and frame combos, I'd love to be able to tell them to (nicely) " f**k right off, leave me to my real, earning work ", and buy the bloody things .......
Of course, now there's the Aussie company doing new cases for the 500s, that go directly into the latest (I think) CRF frames. Not bad if you've got sus cases and a nice, latest model roller.
That's why I was scratching my head on it - I have them in my list as their main company, not BVC Offroad. And, in my saved YouTubes, the same.
The reservation I have about recommending them to people is that they look to have the Countershaft higher than the std engine. It's extremely important to duplicate, as closely as possible, the original positioning of the countershaft sprocket - too high, and it takes only a millimeter or two ( well, too low, too, but that's bloody hard to achieve) , you introduce extra 'squat' to the suspension, especially with a 500.
The pictures they have, and the videos, just don't give a good idea of the positioning, other than the tad too high it looks to me.
I wish I could get near one, to check the positioning, so I could recommend them to people. I'd hope it's just my old eyes and bad viewpoints of the conversion, playing tricks on me.
Their air filter solution echo's, slightly, what I've done with the latest frames - well, only the hose to the carb, then a fabrication Back and Up, but my fabrication has a plenum chamber above, with a Top Mount airfilter, like what you see on Rally bikes, and the original Swedish Husabergs, with the back bone mounted filters. There's a lot of room there once the 4t engine, and std airfilter set up is gone. You can go through rivers with such a set up, not just with relation to the height of the filter, but with the way water / dirt / mud can be channeled by your boots / leg straight to a Pod, like they use.
I've no picture I can post of it, as I can't get the HEIC format of pictures I've taken on my latest phone converted to JPG, but these old pictures of the top and side view of my airbox on my PDS'd CRE500 will give you a bit of an idea of my Airfilter / Airbox solution :
I've managed, I think, to set my phone to JPG, so if I can get one of the two 21s / 22s I've converted back to me, I'll get some pictures to put up. But they live a long long way from me. I doubt the owners will get pictures for me - they are even more useless than I when it comes to 'E' living.
Of course, the Conversion plenum chamber was much less deep than the 500, as I used part of the original airboot on the Steely, But, I use most of the std airbox to cover it all - on both the Steely, and the later CRFs. New CRF airbox shells only cost around the $168 AUD, so cutting them to fit the new Airbox / Filter set up is No heartache. Cripes, a Steely Airbox is somewhere near $400 AUD, IF you can get one. Luckily, I've a mate in the USA that does a lot of AFs, so I could get an airbox, Swingarm and subframe to modify when I did the PDS conversion. So, OEM parts can go back on, when my relos sell it when I cark it - Original 500s go for spectacular money here, nowadays.
Got to ride her at Croom yesterday. This is a very light bike and feels tall. Stays high in the stroke but somehow the suspension got me out of some situations that could have gone poorly. The snappy cr motor was excellent with the lightweight frame.
Pit Row
Bike looks sick! Have you weighed it yet? Curious how much lighter it is than my 22 450R. I have a 2003 CR250R as well and it’s about a ~20 lb difference
I believe it's around 220 with the stock tank but the big one weights more. My other bike was a 2009 crf250 frame with this cr motor. The new one feels a tad lighter.
Wow man!! How good. What a woods weapon!!
How is the vibration in the 450x frame compared to the Gen 2 frame?
so there was no welding required at all?
