Hey guys dont go all DDavis bashing on me, but I really want to know. Today was a hard/bad day on various levels but just thinking about MX made it seem alright, then it made me think why does MX bring me such happiness. For me personally..

Why do I love it??? Because....
One of my first childhood memories was watching a mom walk behind her son on the side walk (I was about 6) and he was about 4 yrs old, head to toe in full moto gear riding a Jr 50 with training wheels. I was amazed that they even made a bike that size, let alone the gear and I thought to myself "that is the coolest thing ever"

The feeling I got gassing it out of a turn and being propeled and feeling the acceleration. Yelling and hollaring inside my helmet smiling ear to ear.

The guys/friends I met that were so cool, not bro cool, but willing to help a newbie ike me and share experience of riding and wrenching.

The absolutely delightful sound of a two stroke reving and the intoxicating smell and smoke coming out the exhaust.

Buying my first bike a YZ60 for $50.00 and not having a clue ut having the older motoheads willing to "pick me up a chain" or take me the tracks

Being able to open up the garage door (I grew up in chino hills) and ride to 3 or 4 tracks with no hassles at all.

Sorry to get all retro and shit, but just thinking about MX makes me happy even when I have had the worst day in a long time... Thanks guys

Dirt, noise, smoke and crazy bastards on two wheels doing stuff you would never think possible.....what's not to love?

For me now it is all about spending time with my son, being on the road just him and me going to races and tracks to ride......best time of my life.

Racing has made memories for us that my son will have for the rest of his life and it has taught both of us some pretty good life lessons too.
You can tell a kid a million times that you have to work hard to get what you want and it might go in one ear and out the other but the first time they land a new jump or grab a holeshot or pass a guy that was faster than they used to be......they really understand what that means.

Being able to share the joy of something you love with your kids is something that you can't put a price on.

I love it because of the challenge and the huge difference between everyone's skill levels

for example,

a new rider came up to me one and told me I was flying and looked super fast
I look at a few of the guys in A grade, and think they are super fast
A graders look at the local pro's and think they are flying
local pro's look at the state champs and think they are flying
state champs look at the national champs and think they are flying
australian national champs look at ama champs and think they are flying.

I'm convinced it's not we that chosse the sport, but the sport that chooses us. Whatever scenario I think of, there is no way I can leave this. It's in my blood. Most of the time when I go to bed my thoughts circle around motocross. Either I'm hooked, or I'm insane. The good thing is, every person involved in this sport has deep in himself the same basic passion for it.

I love motocross because simply every aspect of the sport.

I love waking up on a cold morning in a cold motorhome and sitting in front of the heater vent as you get geared up before going out for practice on a perfectly groomed track.

I love hitting a jump perfectly and throwing a 200 lbs motorcycle flat and sideways, hanging off the side of the bike, floatless. Then seeing that a fellow rider is watching you in amazement, it just makes you appreciate the skills you were gifted and want to put on a good show.

I love hitting that perfect rut.

I love getting away from everything and just riding your dirt bike.

I love the smell of race gas.

I love watching racing.

I love the fans and just when you think nobody loves motocross as much as you do, you meet somebody with the same passion.

I love racing.

I love going to supercross.

I love going to nationals.

I love the thought of racing in front of 100,000 fans, that's what drives me the most.

I love motocross.

I'd be lost without it.

So when you think i'm just a kid doing it for the $, fame, or girls. Think again, please.

I love it because MX bikes are the most beatable machines on the planet.
A car driven like a MX bike wouldn't last 5000 miles.
Full throttle powershifts FTW!

true true.

I remember being on a date and the girl asks me what I enjoy doing. I respond "I love motorcycles, I like riding on dirt and on pavment, I love working on bikes, I like studying bikes and frame construction and how little things can make big changes"
Then she says "what else do you like"? And I look at her and am thinking "well duh, what else is there!! there is nothing better than MX and two wheels" Needless to say it didnt last long lol :-)

Because when the closest track is a hundred damn miles away you can find a challenge elsewhere. And some of the biggest challenges are found far from the track. It can be spurred on from a glimpse of something you saw in a fuzzy grainy black and white pic thirty years ago in a magazine that you thought was "trick" looking.

Thirty years later you stumble onto this on Motonews and Hutch lets you borrow it,

I love the edge and you guys know exactly what I'm talking about.

It's when you're blitzing through millville style whoops and you are perfectly balanced on your back wheel at the perfect speed, perfect weight transfer, perfect feeling.

It's coming out of a corner and tracking the rut or the line so perfectly it feels effortless, with a perfect weight balance.

It's going through a rhythm section perfectly for the first time.

It doesn't happen every time or even every lap, but that's what you keep looking for and every once in a while you have a great day where everything just clicks and you ride that edge all day long, cursing your arms for giving up on you because you could stay out there all day.

The other reason I love this sport is because it's what my dad and I love talking about and doing together. We used to go trail riding with my cousins where we would leave for an entire day and ride dirt roads and trails from town to town just hanging out getting dirty away from the girls. It's such a bonding experience, and it's why every guy who loves this sport wants to pass it down. 5 seconds after finding out their wives are pregnant they're online looking at 50s and kids gear. Hasn't happened to me yet but I already know: KTM 50 and Fox Jr gear. Can't wait.

The other random reasons:

- New gear
- Getting new parts in the mail and knowing that you won't even make it past the garage tonight until you're done installing them
- Race fuel for 2 strokes
- Freshly groomed tracks
- The butterflies in your stomach as you line up for your gate
- The ride home after a win where you're going through the whole race in your mind
- Passing someone on the last corner after battling all race long
- The bad stuff, the loosing, getting passed on the last lap, being faster and still loosing because I got tired - I still love it because it's what gets my ass in the gym on the cold mornings

I always go early, here in CO you can be nearly by yourself at the track in the morning. Bike on the stand all spotless, check tire pressure, oil, lube the chain. Getttin geared up with your bike idling next to you, last item... Goggles on and hit the track. I love first lines on a freshly groomed crisp cool morning. On the gas slammin gears like you can't get enough power down. Friends trickle in, old and new. The pile of lifelong friends born from riding, forever with the common bond of what was or is. I love people that do not ride and do not understand, they'll never understand and that is their loss.
Have a great day!!

For that time you are on your bike nothing else that is going on in the world matters. Bills, work, responsibilities, etc........they all dissapear. I know it's a really old and lame saying, but it truly is freedom from everything that is going on in your life. As soon as you put your helmet on its like you get to go to a whole different world for a little while that most people never get to experience. It's just you and your bike pushing each other as far as each of you will allow and when you get into a good rhythm its like you're connected with each other and there is nothing out ther that I've found that beats that feeling.....except for maybe midget wrestling.

People ask me why? And after thinking about it, I always say "the challenge." It's the most challenging thing I do, and an antidote to the boredom and repetition of everyday life.
People looking from the outside think it's just people getting their jollies revving an engine, but motocross takes all types of knowledge and skill-- riding skill, coordination, physical fitness, mechanical ability, courage, toughness and tenacity.

Yep life sentence for me as well!
For well over 40 years I have tried racing Karts, Skateboarding, Mountain Boarding, R.C. stuff. and the list goes on. Only thing I keep doing on a regular basis is Dirt Bikes. I live for the 7 R's. Ride em, Race em, Reck em ,Repair em, Restore em, Re sell em, Replace em!

Its not lame and old saying, its the real deal.

I also practice flat track here at the house on my oval track with the xr100. Dont think Im crazy (but if you do oh well) talking to myself saying, "go into the corner a bit deeper and lean it over a little further, you had it leaned over X degrees, go X + 2" and feeling the power get to the ground(and not wheelspin) as I accelerate out of the corner and carry more speed than I have before. Being so excited that I of course blow the next turn :-)

The rush! I think about it every day. I had an 18 year layoff where I didn't even throw a leg over a motorcycle and I started riding again at 40. But, I thought about it every single day of that 18 years...
12/2/2010 6:30pm
The old graphics company 100% had an ad in MXA when I was a kid that said "Motocross, not beacause its easy, but because it is hard" If any one can post that up would be really cool.

I love when you lean over way farther than you should in a rut, and rail it perfectly.
I love the rumble of 40 of the fastest riders in the world going for the first turn, and the crowd is completely silent, then the announcer says "Andrew Short with the holeshot!" and the entire mountain side goes nuts for the home team.
I love telling my friends "No, I cant go to another one of your lame party where everyone gets too drunk and tries to bang the one girl that shows up because I have to leave at 3am to make it to practice"
I love when my bike breaks so I can; 1) enjoy opening the new parts that come in the mail 2) actually have something to work on, other than just taking my bike apart and cleaning it.
I love getting faster
I love the worn out feeling after a kick ass day of moto.
the list goes on
