Darius, I have your number now. There's a few of us hanging around my track this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. My place is 40 minutes north of Tallahassee, Florida in Bainbridge, Georgia. If you are gonna be around and wanna ride or stop in and hang let me know, it's on the house my man.

And I do know what you mean about beating the able-bodied guys, and I'm sure you are good I am not doubting that by any means. I would not want to start in the back and be scored by myself either, I am just saying it is something they could have considered to at least review you and make further decisions.

It is kind of a challenge and goal to see how fast you can get and who you can beat, I totally get where you are coming from. Just gotta be given a chance and start building.

Darius, Shane, RanelC, Zacka, anyone else who rides paralyzed....huge huge huge props!

Everyone on these forums should be in support of these guys. You are all one ride away from being in their situation.

So he's on one of those bikes that have the crash bars, seat belt, foot straps and all that stuff on it? Also, he can't get up if he falls? If so, that might be the liability the track is concerned with. What class was he trying to ride in?
Pretty much like a fallen rider that gets hurt and can't get up,at least Darius can move himself off the track,as for the crash bars etc there no different to handlebars, sprockets, spinning back wheels etc and what about sidecar racing??

We don't have sidecar racing here

and DanDunes, I didn't see one post that wasn't supportive of Darius riding or racing, but only saying that they understood the problems that could be a part of the promoters decision

I took the advice I gave Dave and reread the posts and I'll just say I agree w/Dave that nobody specifically said he shouldn't ride but a few did say they wouldn't let him on their track if they owned one. Sometimes, like a lot of us, I get sidetracked with winning the debate which sometimes leads to me reading and typing with a closed mind. Also read Zackas post below and IMO that's the first real arguement as to why he shouldn't be on the track. I feel the liability issues are trivial though. IMO there's no more liability for Darius on the track than there is for anyone else participating in this sport. I personally believe in everyone having the right to choose what they do and the risks they take. I don't think it's our place to say what Darius should or should not do with his life. He obviously knows the risks and even after leaving his legs on a MX track he still chooses to race and I support that 100%.

All i have to say is I am fucking horrified; firstly, no neckbrace, being strapped to a bike is going to increase the risk of these injuries occurring. secondly, no back support or protection of any sort to reduce the risk of compression fractures on the sensitive lower level vertebrae. Darius, you may not feel them, but they play a vital role in balance, stability and believe it or not, bowel and bladder function.

I wear a custom built corset that keeps me stiff from nipples to waist, yes it is restricting, and along with the neckbrace i feel like robocop. But prevention is better than cure, and when the body ability is reduced, the risks in certain areas are increased. I know for a fact that both myself and Ricky James use a product that assists in this core stability and protection

HE SHOULD NEVER BE ALLOWED ON A TRACK, without this protection and i completely agree with the decision made this wknd. There is brave and then theirs stupid. This is not about maybes or possibilities, jumping will put unbelievable amount of pressure on your lower back, and bones will fracture. Im not sure how long you have been in a wheelchair, but you bones will also become more brittle over time. Fucking protect yourself for crying out loud.

Rant over.

Im sure Darius will respond to this but ill give you my 2 cents since im so close to him. First the neck brace is a matter of opinion. There certainly are thousands of riders that choose not to wear them. The debate of their protection has been discussed in many threads.
While he did not own one in this video he does now.
Second, Darius has consulted with his medical team and they are 100% aware of his activities and have given it their blessing.
Third, The level of protection he decides to use is his decision not yours or anyone else's.

lawyers dont sue people. people sue people.

to the guy who runs six tracks: waivers dont help you a single iota if you are found grossly negligent for letting an impaired rider on the track in the first place.

Just speaking as a person that rides and has had a spinal cord injury, I think that Darius's decision to ride is HIS fully. But, you cannot deny the fact that the way he, Ricky James, and Henry ride will not feel great later in life. Neither will it feel great for RC, Stewart or any able-bodied rider. But, to sit here and say that Darius riding jumps, bumps, etc. is completely fine and is not a health risk is absurd. I see a chiropractor every week and three times a week after I ride. With no legs, your vertebra take all the shock, and after a while the cartilage between the vertebra WILL wear away and it WILL hurt, trust me, I know. It is also going to cause sublaxations that will soon put pressure on the spinal cord and cause more muscle spasms and other effects, trust me. It is his choice just like I choose to ride, but I can also stand and absorb much more shock. Darius, ride your heart out, but I would definitely say check up with the dude that posted above somewhere or Ricky James and get yourself some more equipment to help your body out, it'll thank you on down the road.

As for the AMA rule book and such, I have not consulted it but if I remember from racing there were a few rules that I ave encountered personally as an able-bodied racer. When the card goes up, all crew must step back from the bikes. Also, if I rider falls, except for the peewee class, there is to be no outside help or disqualification will result. Also, I remember if you have broken levers or your handlebar ends are poking through the grips (all causing sharp metal) you cannot ride or will be disqualified. I am not taking any sides here at all, I am just bringing this to the forefront for all parties to think about when considering Darius and his modified bike and the scenarios that could result if he gets in a pile up with another rider. Without the ability for the AMA or track owner to prepare in advance and possibly modify these stipulations for a special needs rider, you have to give them the benefit of the doubt for their decision.

I am all about motocross and having anybody and everybody involved like me, Darius, Ricky James, but having a dirt bike land on me (which I have had) is bad enough but what if Darius lands on me and his leg bars break and pierce through me, just saying, you have to consider these things I don't care who or where has let him race before.

These are partially my thoughts and some people at the race, not naming names, but just wanting to help shed all light on all angles. I am fan of Darius now, but you have to do some realistic thinking.

i dont need to go out looking like robo cop i dont like to feel stiff when i go out and ride and yes i do wear a neck brace and other things to keep me safe so its fully up to me to ride and what i want to wear when i ride just like any other rider. i want you to come to a national race and tell me what fast rider you see looking like robo cop while riding!!! also my docctor and my therapist have came and watched me race before they know the danger of motocross and so do I. and just because you have extra gear on is not gonna sock up any of the shock from the jumps i have a lot of felling on my body i pretty much feel everything i can not walk fully but i can feel thing so if somthing hurts me i will know what hurts and what doesnt. it may not hurt now maybe it will hurrt later tho but i will worry about it when that comes. i also ride a lot as much as i can i ride and i work out and do a ton of therapy so when i ride it helps me instead of making my legs go crazy it makes them calm because i dont get many spasms aat all but the little that i do go away when i ride so if anything riding is helping me.also those leg bars will not break for any reason you ccan check them out for ur self just like AMA did when my bike passed there test those bar will not break they are made to fall on and all of the weight from the bike goes on to the bars so even if i did get tangled with another rider they wouldnt do anything but rub on and slide right off of there bike so tangling up with another riders leg is out of the question and when i line up at the gate i sweep the out side anyway just to stay out of the way if the other riders were to get tangled and pile up. there is nothing special that the track owner or ama has to prepare for they dont have to get the track ready for me they dont have to get me help or anything the only problem that if there was a problem that i would have is if i go down that i would need help and dont worry everyone because now i will create somthing that picks me up when i fall so that there wont be any problem at all but i will ride and race and there is not a rule right now that can stop me so i will see everyone at the track!!! thank you for all your concerns!!

I hear ya man, and do what you love. Nobody's stopping you. Everyone has their view and such, I just know I have been given a second chance at walking and with fused vertebra, a rod, plate, and wire in my neck I am damn sure going to be as preventative as I can be. My buddy Davi Milsaps suffers back pain from a broken back he sustained awhile back and all the seat bouncing he has been doing recently testing and motoing he got to the point he could not bend over the other day. I am not here to argue with anyone, and I take chances every day I ride or drive a car or get out of the tub, so I'm on the same page. But I have also came back from a spinal cord injury and I am in med school, so I just wanted to back up some of the posters on here inquiring about para/quads riding and the possible health risks or hazards.

I understand your passion and what you are saying Darius, but there is two sides to everything that has been said here. Come ride Sunday, we can chat it up, and see who we need to talk to to get your bike approved, how you are going to sit at the gate when the card goes up, and how you will get up off the ground. These are things that I meant track owners needed to prepare for.

Don't confuse my explanations with coming at you, I am just offering what I feel is some great, factual info to board readers, coming from someone who has been to the best spinal clinics in the world and studies medicine and can feel everything and cycles and lift weights and RIDES.

But I feel enough has been said, you will all see Darius racing soon I am sure and these debates need to be had wit the people that make decisions - not me haha.

I feel like this has been an inspirational/educational thread though for sure, take care everyone!

Great post Shane...

Im sure Darius was as emotional about this topic as i was when it first started. I have learned a ton just reading yall's comments.

Ride safe, God Bless & Happy Holidays!!

Thank you MxDaD324....

I am sure he was emotional and he should be, and I have tried my best not to come across as knocking him because we both rode bikes, broke ourselves, and still ride. So I am on the same team haha. I avoid most topics but I felt I could offer a little something to this one.

Happy Holidays to you too and everyone on here!

So I guess Grieby should expect your apology for calling him a douchebag in short order?

I find this thread particularly interesting because of the characters involved. Additionally I shattered my L1 vertebrae 41 days ago and suffered a spinal cord hit but it appears I will fully recover.

It's so easy to think that it won't happen to you when you see and read about the injuries at the track but once I came so close to the same injury it really effected me.

Anyways, in no particular order:

Darius & Lusk, you guys are so cool, I don't know what else to say. Bummed you couldn't race Darius. The race track is a dangerous place but I really don't see how you could possibly make it more dangerous for the others in any way.

Darius, you ride a blow up happy 250F. You lack the ability that others may have to get off that bike if/ when it pops over a jump. You need proper protection. You and I seem to be built in a similiar fashion (I'm 6', 164# in the hospital cause I had dropped 10#)) and I had a custom corset stiff plastic brace built for me so I could walk around and it's somewhat adjustable, and trimmable. I will be permanently done w/ it in about 1-4 more weeks. I'd be flat honored if you would let me send it to you, no cost of course. I'd like to see it contribute to your protection equipment if possible. It's restrictive but not nearly as restrictive as being a quad. Just PM me your addy and it'll go out the moment it comes off my body. It will also come w/ a cotton sock to wear underneath.

Darius another point and I need to get real here. Maybe you are just super comfortable writing here amongst your moto brethen but your lack of punctuation indicates a lack of focus on education. You are a black man that is also handicapped. People are going to judge you because of this. You need to put a lot of focus in to educating yourself to really stand above. As unfair as it is, you have to be better than average to get the same consideration as others for job promotions and advancement in life. Focus some of that riding energy into building that brain of yours. It will pay you back in spades.

Lusk, I'm confused, you refer to yourself as a quad yet you stand, walk w/ a walker, and can stick a leg out? Educate me please as I'm confused as a quad generaly refers to all four limbs being immobilized.

After my accident I still wanted to ride so badly. As soon as I got home from the hospital I hobbled up on to my bent up motorcycle dreaming of when I could carve some laps again. I even rode my friends new 350F around an oval drill just 4 weeks after shattering my L1. I have to admit that after weeks of severe pain and reading many stories of these spinal injuries I think I'm finally getting to a place where I can move on to other activities in my life. We'll see I guess cause I go back and forth.

Lastly, we all really need to support the stem cell research that will lead to a cure for this terrible injury sooner rather than later.

Take care guys.
