Good news today, y’all. No evidence remains of the infection that was cleaned out last week.  Stitches come out 1-December, full bore physical therapy resumes 2-December.  I’ll be back to riding gravel, paddling outrigger canoe, cruising around on an old CB550, and all the other important stuff by 1-January.  With a knee better than it’s been in 7 years since it was replaced. Be positive and work the process, Manny.

Glad they got it cleaned up for you.

Check in time for me tomorrow morning is 5:15am.  They do their most complex surgery of the day 1st, that’s me…. If all goes well, I’ll be home around 1-1:30 tomorrow afternoon.  And then the work begins, again.

Holeshot!

I know what your doing right now. . . just wait until the nerve block wears off. . . did you walk the hall today?

My ass was shining out the back of my cool gown, wife walking behind me with the nurse, while PT made me do the walk.

It was an older black lady and she and my wife were cracking up!

I asked what was so damn funny when we got back to the room and I was settled. . .   she asked my wife if I suntanned naked!!  WTF?!  lol

No tan lines. . . . .🤨

Btw. . . .I had some wild nurses. . .hot and crazy. . .lol

Good luck to those having this done soon.

I am now 12 days post op.

Went to pt today and i swear the lady Must have recognized me as someone that cut her off in traffic once.

She was on a mission to cause me pain, and succeeded. Even had a cruela deville laugh.

But she did get me to 4 degrees/120 degrees.

Night train,  Man, that is great news to get that infection cleaned out and up!!

Best wishes to you on healing.....

Quick story, I worked with an Electrician and he was dating a vet student, she was about to graduate.

Horse kicked her in the knee compound fracture and destroyed it. . . time for tkr. . .

Got infection in it. . . .couldnt get it cleaned up regardless what they did. . . .

The took the implant out and just put a placeholder where the implant would be and pumped her with antibiotics.

Slowly the infection went away, and she finally got the new hardware in and started rehab.

She was bedridden for a long time, and her muscles had atrophied.  It was a tough thing to come out of.

BTW, she was an intern at the time for Oklahoma State Uni...Go Pokes!!!

They paid for it all. . . . .

Oh yes, they have ways of making you talk. . .

And say bad words. . . .

Good luck bro, keep pushing, you got this now!

After my first experience with max pain right out of the OR, they decided to use a longer block this time… 4 hours.  Mayo does not like the 12 or 18 hour blocks.  But that meant they wanted me in extended recovery which added 4 hours to my stay.

Out of surgery at about 10 and the block was gone by 11:30.  Battled nausea for a while.  Once things settled in, I was able to get some movement out of it and then walk down the hall.  This PT guy was odd, he drug a chair down the hall behind me in case I needed a break.

Pain level of 5-6 most of the afternoon and evening.  Got working on some flex, got to about 80.

Sleep was in and out, but still much better than the first one.  Notably stiffer this morning got the exercises in all the meds on schedule.  Taking an ice and elevate break.  Hope to get back to 60 today and get pain down to a 5.  So far, this is a really different experience than the first one.

With the pain and all…they’re probably being real careful with your initial motion…hence, the PT nurse with the chair.

I’m stoked you’ve got a handle on things.

Get’er Done! 💪🏼

Update.  Sand whoops probably weren’t a good idea.  Definitely sore today, but making progress.   Just have to remind myself I’m not racing next time.

Just did my home PT and I got 74…. Wildly different results than my first one.

Most importantly, on the first one when I would do home PT and eventually formal PT, the pain generated would last for a while, sometimes hours.  Now it fades in 5-10 minutes.

Note: There are some FUGLY postures/images in here of knees…mostly post-surgery…that some may not want to see….

Over the last 45 years, I’ve broken A LOT of stuff…A LOT of “me”…too many bones, tendons, ligaments and important soft tissues…and it started to take a toll on me ESPECIALLY on my knees and my mobility.

It all came down to this: I got a knee replacement today. And it is all because of Moto. Therefore, I’m thinking…

This is “Moto”?

For about 5 years, I’ve been getting slowed down by pain and the lack of mobility. My knees, especially my left, we’re always painful and heavy feeling…bogged down like I was dragging them thru life whenever I was attempting to walk or stand for more than a few minutes.

A few years back, MC sent me a text from his hospital bed with his “new knee” straight outta surgery and he was already stoked! He had this giant post-surgical melon of a knee…that immediately better motion than his  worn out“stock parts” 🤣

Since then, on a few occasions, he’s asked me “Why haven’t you done your knees, yet?” Ya know, I really didn’t have an answer other than the simple fact that I had a stupid mindset of not wanting to “Take the time to do it.”

Time off from racing…racing that was already being compromised by my knees.

Time off from work…that’s total bs for me. I can work from anywhere on virtually any device…so, yup, that’s a non-issue. Besides, I’ll be able to be back in the office in a matter of days.

The cost: all in and including PT & whatever devices I might have to buy (so far they’ve all been included other than the “Ice Machine” my wife got…’cause she’s jus’ awesome)…all deductibles are gonna add up up to around $7-8K on a $120K+ spend. Also, if I get my other knee done by year’s end…it’ll be cheaper since I’ve paid near the annual limit on my ankle and knee...which is nice.

Look, I know we all have different insurance issues and some may pay less (like the Medicare crowd) and some may pay more,..and, yes, there are some that don’t have coverage or their coverage makes it too damn hard to get your knees covered.

Here’s my message to all of you: if you’ve got pain…something holding you back…something you think might be getting “bad” or “worse”…

Go find answers.
Go get whatever help and assistance you can. Go and take the time to get healthy.

Because, you’re worth it.

I know what you mean had both of my knees replaced this year the first one back in June and the second one just a month ago still rehab in my right knee but I'm so glad I did it there are already light years better than what my knees were this time last year definitely worth taking the time to get them done

My block was an 18 hour . . .and my pain was incredible. . I made a post about it somewhere on here.

Tornado hit my town pharmacy the night I got home, no pain meds for three days. . .

You guys with you saying pain wasn't as bad as the old knee, I'm glad you had good fortune!

Lol. . . .me not so much!

Pain on this one wasn’t as bad as the first TKA.  I woke up and I was immediately close to hyper ventilating.  It felt like he was still sawing on the bones…

And I puked up the first 2 Oxy, so not as bad as you, but it was a rough MF’r.

This one hurts, but it’s so much better.

any of you guys know if your prosthesis was installed WITHOUT bone cement? My surgeon does both cemented and cementless installations. My 1st TKA back in 2016 was cemented and it was standard procedure back then. I don't know when the cementless techniques were introduced and I only found out about it in researching current Dr before starting process. I asked about it in early examinations and was told they now preferred to go without cement. I wasn't sold on it as my 1st new knee was going strong after 9 years and I knew it worked well being cemented so they let me choose.

I believe mine are both cemented in.  Pain is still an issue, but so much more manageable than the first one.

Here’s for the pics or it didn’t happen crew.

I was NOT cemented and they used some robot that’s known as the-cool-guy-device to create all the machined surfaces & cavities for the “installed hardware”…& they’ve got a solid track-record…so, I’m stoked.

As I read your history, seems you’re having good results with it…? Nice. I’m guessing it’s a case by case situation.

Here’s what things look like as of yesterday at 4 weeks out to the day…

Mine was cemented.  I think it was 2018.  I assume they now prefer to not use cement in case the end plates have to be replaced at some point?

On the pain side I’ve never had an issue with it post-op. Not for the first 2 days while the pain blockers are still working.  A long time ago I awoke screaming in pain after an ACL surgery. The surgeon had left without any pain meds prescribed.  He had to come back to the hospital, fix his mistake, and flee before my Mother put him in the ER as a patient in need of urgent care.

Mine was not cemented, and the daVinci robot did the cutting and measuring.  Dr. Said I was 1.5 inches short on right leg and fixed that.

I did not have a drain, and my incision was glued, not stapled or sewn..1000000586

At the end of the 2nd week of being away from work (no access to email, texts, voice calls, or any communications from employer) I had to reduce high blood pressure medicine by 1/2 because my bp was hanging around ~70/50.  Other than performance pressure at work I’ve lived a healthy lifestyle for decades.  It’s a lot to think about while I’m sitting around convalescing.

in the Stryker Triathlon model in both my knees, there are no plates used. It's a 3- piece unit with an upper (Femoral), lower (Tibial), and Patellar components. There is a replaceable pad sitting in the Tibial tray between upper and lower components. I was told the cementless units are preferred because of less chance of rejection as they are treated with some chemicals to encourage your bone to grow onto the implant like it was naturally part of your body.

You can see comparison of different models here including side by side of Cemented vs. non cemented components.

Had my right TKR done two years ago, 1st 3 weeks were a bitch but I did rehab every day and was golfing at 10 weeks.
