Used to go to Irwindale and Costa Mesa in the early 70's and take Big pieces of plexi glass, an old boat windshield, to sit on the corners and not get covered in dirt.

I agree. I have been apart of Speedway for many years. Sponsored a lot of the Pros.

I spend my Saturday nights at Costa Mesa, when I don't have a race of my own, to go to.

I like the short track stuff here in the U.S., and long track from Europe.

Back in the day I saw the World Championships at the Coliseum...that was cool.

Ha ~ I was there, I took a bus to L.A. You could do that in the early seventies.

I did the same when I was a teen, taking the bus from Riverside to L.A. for one of the Superbowl of Motocross events. I still remember walking through the narrow tunnel at the Coliseum, walking out and seeing all the brilliantly lit green grass, and the track circling the stadium and climbing up to the peristyle and back. That one was early enough that they even had the mudhole.

Sorry, that's the way I remember it.

Actually, a few years after that, I worked on the crew that bannered the track. Our high school Biology teacher was Ron Crandall, who also ran the races at Corona Raceway, and he was in charge of our crew. He later became the AMA Ref. Another guy on that crew was John Gallagher, who's now the FIM rep at the Supercross races.

The Rams were still playing at the Coliseum at the time, and the course had to be built on the edges of the track, not on the playing field itself. As we were putting up the ribbons along the track (which would later get sucked up into the rear wheels of bikes), the grounds crew was always freaked by the staple guns. "Don't shoot those onto the grass. One of the Rams could get it stuck in their knee."

Being the teenaged punks that we were at the time, that was all the encouragement we needed to spray the field with as many as we could get away with.

Guy B do you remember the K&N shop off the 215 freeway near Columbia? A guy from my school worked there Kent Parker. Know him? Also Paul Lambert.

I remember a K & N shop on...Main? Across from a Maico dealer? Also, the Ossa shop on Third Street.

I also remember when Malcolm Smith's retail store was about where you're talking about the K & N shop being.

They used to show it on USA network or ESPN when I was a kid on Thursdays I think. I tried the knobby class at the old Comp Park (pre Injun) speedway and got waxed by some dude on a DRZ. The races in the UK are unreal.

I was at the Superbowl of MX also.

I am good friends with Larry Huffman, and John Smith. John worked the floor as Larry, Called from the booth. Hav'nt seen John in awhile although he lives just a few miles from me. Larry pops up all the time. I gave Larry one of my Limos to use, ( I had a Limousine business at the time) when he and Kathleen (K.C.) got married.

Malcohm Smith was the Service mechanic at that K & N, then he bought the service dept. from Ken & Norm, then he bought the dealer...after a short time, changed it to Malcohm Smith motorcycles.

My father was Enduro team partners with Malcohm.

Did not mean to jack the thread, sorry. I grew up in the area and this brings back things, like riding in Canyon Crest or Rattle Snake and seeing Malcom and Steve McQueen there. I always wondered about K&N and what happened to it. It was the "Mystical Racing Shop" to me as a kid. I used to hang out almost every day at Yamaha of Fontana, drooling on the bikes. Fishback was the owners son and he had all the cool bikes. Then he got extremely fast at almost every type of riding. I even think he raced speedway. Could be wrong.

Anyone remember when Ascot had weekly races? One of the Agajayenian (sp?) brothers started speedway racing after he obtained a bunch of bleaches from the 84 Olympics and built the track next to the 1/2 mile.

There was a circuit can't remember them all CM, Irwindale ,Ventura ,Ascot San Bernardino(got into a fight there with some HA's) and some other places. It got big then the Americans started winning World Championships, then it's faded. I can hear Costa Mesa at night in my backyard. It seems to be a draw here still.

Jim "The Animal" Fishback nick named by Larry Huffman did race Speedway, and was really good, Jimmy Jr. still races once in awhile and does good as well.

Speedway kicks off in May...

Hell, they didn't have them on Class C bikes until '69. How'd you like to do Springfield without brakes? Old timers said it would ruin the sport.

Because on such a short track, this creates the potential crashing into the back of the rider braking.

Also, the bikes are built to go sideways, if you slow you the bike will stand up.

You will often see a support or "B" class rider get into trouble, get off the throttle, and go straight into the wall.

The difference between a Pro, and an Amateur, in any motor sport is when in trouble, the Pro goes for the throttle, the amateur, goes for the brakes...SO gas it !!

There is a rule, that if you "Park it" meaning to slide it to a stop, you are penalized.

nice video bobby. i raced speedway for 24 years and raced in the national championship 15 times with my best finish being a 7th overall.
