Soo I've got my first race this weekend, it's an indoor arenacross race, 2 motos both Saturday and Friday. I'm racing 250f on a 125, in the intermediate/ junior class. I've been riding for about a year and a half, so i'm not a total beginner or anything, and the indoor track is super mellow, but this is my first race, so any advice from some people that've actually gone out and raced?

I'm a firm believer that if you haven't won in beginer you dont need to move up.... But thats just me. Beginer dudes are fast sometimes, it's called sandbagging, you will learn to hate it.

1) win practice
2) start last and work forward, it will look way better than starting first and going to last!

My advice would be NOT to race the JR or INT class.
Race the begger class.
Holeshot and win it...
Then keep sand bagging the class til you point out. Smile
It looks better on a racing resume if you win all the time and also get some high point championships.

hmmm tempting, but i don't think jr will be too hard either! i have a friend that rides int/ pro at these races, and i am not a whole lot slower than him.

Don't over think it and remember you can't win the race in one corner or one section so just take it easy and ride like it's practice - don't even pay attention to how far ahead or behind you the competition is. Most beginners make most of their mistakes by suddenly trying to ride faster than they ever have and wanting to pass everyone right away or keep up with whoever is in front of them.

Oh, and jump every jump on the first lap of practice to intimidate everyone (sorry, had to throw in the necessary Vital smartass comment).

Good luck and have fun

Make sure you turn the gas on.

Check that gas again. And again. It's a habit.

And pee before practice and moto's,

Use motocross goggles, never welding ones - they distort shtuff.

Try and stay as relaxed as possible. You dont want to get tensed up, as soon as that happens, you're screwed.

Right before the gate drops, hit the guy to your rights kill switch.

Just relax and have fun.
Race ONLY the guy in front of you, forget everyone else.
Have a simple goal...beat someone, anyone.
Try not to fall down

Drink lots of water the day before and day of.
Pee before you go to the gate

DO NOT jump anything you haven't tried before just because others are, stay within your limits and comfort zone.

No one becomes a national champion in their first race.

and lastly, "Jumping is for show, cornering is for go"

Oh, and you forgot to tell him to step on his front wheel while pushing kill switch

Line up on the inside and get the jump on the pack. Start moving over on them immediately.

Don't fall down.

Ride really really fast.

Starts are very important indoors. Prep your gate well and practice your starts. Get to the line early for your motos so you don't get hooped on the gate pick.

Personally I think you're a little nutty to do an indoor race as your first race. They're very chaotic- much more so than an outdoor race. But you're chosen your battle, so good luck.

1) Be prepared for elbows and knees in your way.

2) Don't follow the line of the guy in front of you.

3) Try to block out other riders on the line and focus on your start. Very very important inside the house. The races are short and the passing opportunities few. See no. 2 above.

4) If you don't get a great start, don't panic, just focus on riding your own pace. As fast as you can.

5) If you do get a good start, don't look back.

Have fun!

If the first turn is a left-hander. Smack your hand into the front brake lever of the guy next to you in the first turn.
Fun will ensue...

I rode like a maniac my first race. I did get a 4th place trophy though. One of the experienced fast kids walked up and said "you ride too fast."
I think he meant "you ride too crazy."

Pay attention to the moto order, you dont want to miss your moto by getting Albert Pujols autograph in the pits. That really happened at my last AX race.

Practicing as fast as a faster rider is one thing...racing as fast as you practice is another.

Go for the beginner class if it's your first race.

Don't hold your breath for the whole moto.

Adrenaline can make you strong, or make you do dumb stuff. Pick the correct one of those two.
