I was pretty surprised at how freely they prescribe all that stuff here.

My dentist, a few years back, gave me enough Vicodin to kill an elephant and that was only after a wisdom tooth extraction.

After my recent wreck they were literally coming 'round every hour or so in the hospital trying to get me to take percs etc and when I got discharged gave me a barrel full to take home.

It's becoming harder and harder to get it here unless you have a good relationship with a doctor and a well documented history of injuries or a reason to need them.

9 broken ribs, both collarbones and all I got was 10 tabs of tylenol 3. No surgeries. No braces. Sent home. And of course a $4300 emergency room/ ambulance bill.

Had to hit the black market for a month. Another $500.

There is no health care in the USA for a young, employed male doing this sport.

I can understand how you feel, especially since we, americans want and need a quick fix for injuries. These medications only mask pain. There is a lot of natural holistic medicine\ supplements that will help you, that will not hurt your body. I am not a Dr. but I know that there are products like "Omega XL" and "Celadrin", which are essential fatty acid combinations, that have helped my boys with on going pain, while products like " Wobenzymes" are really helpful with an initial injury. You can read up on these products online and see if they might be helpful to you. Acupunture, and hard-core physical therapy on the injured area will heal too, but it will take time. Bottom line, do you really want to live your life in a "fog of medication"?

Pain pills are the devil. They will hook you and drag you down long after the pain is gone. They are the new "acceptable" heroin. Take them when you absolutely have too for short periods of time. I've watched so many people lose everything over that shit, and I'm talking everything. One even lost his life.

180mg. Roxys + 120mg morphine sulfate per day. I don't ride anything but my street bike anymore. Won't list my injuries, just to say they are plentiful. I've been on this regimen for approx. 10yrs. Don't really want to take them but my quality of life is zero without them. I'd be a couch potatoe in a week without the pills. Addiction, absolutely physically addicted. Mentallty, yea that too but I DON'T abuse them. I did once and running out is no fun whatsoever. I'll never take more than my prescribed ammount since running out exactly one time about 2 days early.

I have a friend on that stuff. He used to take pain pills of any kind, by the hand full numerous times of day. I am 29, two wrecked knees that constantly hurt. I started to take some over the counter arthritis pills, but they sucked so I figured by the time I was 40 I would be a junkie. I said screw it and just bitch about the pain. ha ha. I have seen what it is like getting off drugs, and thats not for me. During my surgeries, I just load up at the hospital and usually that was enough by the time I got home.

I could not even read past the first page before having to write this. Stay AWAY from the pain killers...ALL opiate based forms the best you can. And that include percs, oxys, vicodan, etc, etc. They are so many forms and taking them too much ruined my LIFE...especially when it came down to my taking suboxone for pain.

I was a former racer and in fact, former amatuer champ at Ponca back in it's heyday. I am 41 now...went through several back surgeries...and LOST EVERYTHING. I am good now and rebuilding, but dealing with all the losses is troubling. I lost my business, my house,my life savings, my wife and my kid's respect. Sux. Stay away from the stuff if you can. And I believe there are many more testimonials from former Mxers out there that can say the same....some recovered and salvaged their lives...some not. And my hat is off to Roncada. It seems as though he struggled a bit, rebounded and is doing really well. Some...I know...have not been so fortunate.

It scares me too, but doesn't surprise me one bit! I fractured my radius and ulna just above the wrist in June at one of my motorcycle club's events. As soon as I got back to the track from the ER a bunch of the other club members were asking me what drugs I got and if they could get some of them. I had an external fixator on my wrist for 7 weeks, but I stopped taking vicodin after the first week because that stuff scares me. I can't take percocet without getting a nasty headache.

We don't have our own track (we do have three club properties that all connect to riding areas) but we put on a couple events throughout the year in Western Washington: an offroad poker run, a street poker run, and a vintage scrambles/ flat track race. It's a fun group to be a part of for sure.

Wow, I am shocked that so many riders turn to pills. I am just realizing a gift my father left me that I never figured out until now. He was a great Dad and always very supportive of my racing, but he was an alcoholic and died from it. Thus I've always been very fearful of alcohol and pain meds to the point where I don't take anything beyond Advil ever.
Even after a bad crash which had me hospitalized for five days (badly broken wrist requiring three surgeries, two broken vertebra, broken scaphoid, 9 broken ribs, bruised lungs etc. ) I was off the narcotics the day after I got home from the hospital. The pain was pretty bad, but the body is pretty amazing at adjusting to it if you give it a chance. And each day it will get better so thats always something to look forward to.
Also, just getting the blood flowing with any kind of exercise has amazing effects on healing and putting your mind in a better place.
I guess I learned to try everything else before going to chemicals and it's been good for me. I'd say that if you need pain meds to function then you need to take some time off to heal and get stronger. Chemicals are not the answer, cemetaries are full of proof of that.

Yeah, I hear yah,Danny.

I have a buddy who pretty much went through the same thing, lost everything.
They even messed up his stomach badly.
Doctors took him off all meds and prescribed him a medical marijuana card.
That is all he uses for now for his back pain.
He is doing better then ever these days.

I just read the second page of this post...and holy cow. Get OFF the SUBOXONE asap. That stuff is great for pain...and yes they give it to you too to come off the other stuff as marketed. BUT it is way more potent than ANYTHING...and coming off of it is PURE hell. Please don't believe it being a safe alternative...as "marketed." It is worse than all the others combined. Please don't fall into the same trap as I did.

FastEddy, yeah you know what I talking about then...and better for you to see what it can do to others than yourself. My stomach and digestive system got messed up as well. THC is still not the way to go though. ANY drug is bad...not matter what it is. Try to get your buddy to go to a good physical rehad/therapy facility. There is a super facility in Jacksonville, Fla...Brooks Rehabilitation...that is amazing. I was there for 5 weeks....which included 5 days of week, 8 hours a day of intense stretching, cardio and precise physical therapy.

Stretching and mild cardio exercise will do wonders. Especially the stretching. Pain causes muscles to tighten...and taking alternative medications will make you prone to be lazy and couch or bed-ridden...which in turns make the muscles tighten up even more thus causing more pain. It lends to a vicious, never ending cycle of catastrophy.

Wow! Thanks for the testimony. Pain pills messed up RonRon pretty badly too.

It is obvious that people are wired differently . For some, like me, it doesn't become an issue. I unfortunately spent a lot of time either in the dentist's chair, or in surgery, and so collected lots of pills. But addiction was never an issue. I was also able to kick a 10+ year smoking habit with relative ease. For other it is a life long struggle.
I don't know if it is related, but I never get an endorphin high, no matter how hard I work out.

Man, this is one scary thread.

I can see how lucky I am. At 18, I have been on most of the pain pills that are out there for various injuries. For some reason, any prescription drug given to me does not help out much with dealing with the pain. The only pain medicine that works for me is Motrin.

And for those that are having issues with joint pain, try some Phiten patches and changing your diet. Personally, I have found that when I consume a lot of olive oil, fresh vegetables, and milk, my joints feel a lot better and can go throughout the day without pain. When I start to eat junk food for a week or so, I will have trouble moving throughout the day and just being in some type of pain.

After having my head mashed between the forks and bars of my bike and the frame rails and engine of another guys bike, my sinus cavities were fractured and drained into my wisdom teeth. Hooked on percs almost immediately. Family and friends kinda tough loved me off the junk. Looking back at that time having seen what happens to people that continue to use, just makes me draw up. Coulda been me EASY. The problem now though is that since I've quit racing, I've gained a lot of weight and just in general gone down hill physically. Definately just an excuse but, time is a real issue when you work two jobs.

Lots of good advice on here already as pertains to leaving the pills alone but I'll add this, ride as long as you can. The old saying, 'You don't quit racing 'cause you get old. You get old 'cause you quit racing.' may hold some truth.

Couldn't agree more. Pain is the body's way of telling you "next time back off a bit!". Seriously though, I'm shocked by reading this thread too. I never heard of that patch someone mentioned above until a few weeks ago when someone was telling me a guy put two of them on then drank some beer........See ya on the other side! Most of these drugs mentioned really are heroin in pill form. For some reason when it comes in a little colorful pill, people see it as being harmless.

Broken left humorous and dislocated elbow, broke the radius and ulnar in the right wrist, dislocated left hip and fractured pelvis as well as separated the right shoulder all at the same time, broke left thumb and separated left shoulder at the same time, been knocked out 3 times. Permanent nerve damage in the right elbow that radiates a burning sensation up my arm and into my back, several other injuries that I didn't even go to the doctor for. Both knees hurt like hell when I'm walking up stairs. It's actually better if I run up the stairs! I'm not taking any pills at all. I'm 52 and I continue to work out to alleviate the pain I experience on a daily basis. Truthfully, I'm waiting till I get really, really old to get on the pills. I know some of you guys have to have the pills to help with the pain but I also know a good work out program can help. I wonder how the medical marijuana would help with the pain? That's what I'm waiting for! Hopefully that law will pass in Texass at least by the time I'm 70. Sit back and burn one and it'll all be good!!!! That's what I'm talking about. Good luck to all you guys and be well...

I've been wanting to bring this up for a while but havent, but with Devil1's ankle replacement topic going on I figured....what the hell?

Most of us that ride, if not all of us, have been injured at one point or another....some pretty bad. If you're like me and have had a lot of pretty bad injuries over the years then your body is shot to hell and hurts all the time. I was just curious if anyone has to rely on painkillers from time to or all the time for that matter and if so, how do you go about it? I'm not talking about Tylenol or Aspirin either. I mean Vicodin, Oxy, Percocet, etc......

Has it become a problem for you, does it affect your riding or make you more fatigued when riding? Has it ever got to a point where you got worried about addiction? I'm just curious cause I'm at the point where I hurt like hell all the time and it's either live with pain and be miserable or give in to pain meds and have to worry about that whole situation.
Good thread here. Very interesting posts with all the pill poppin. With 28 broken bones including a broken back I have a secret that will revolutionize the industry of pain relief….shoot, brb I have a phone call. . . . .[timed out]…

I am only 23 but have had 14 surgeries on various parts of my body and have broken everything (yes everything) except my two humerus'. I never liked to take pain meds and am not an addictive person by any means. After one of my shoulder surgeries coupled with a very severe concussion, i took oxycontin. I ran into a little addiction problem before i even realized it. I personally am always in pain from multiple things, but I would way rather deal with a little pain than deal with the shit i went through being addicted and then quitting cold turkey no program. (not to mention I am a heli pilot now and cant take any meds even if i wanted to). IMO if you can deal with the aches and pains, deal with them rather than flirt with pain meds. I use my aches/pains as an excuse for back messages from my gf lol.
