Hello,

I am going to the track Saturday and looked what the weather was going to be and it will be 53 degrees with 20-30 mph winds (max). I am just wondering how wind affects track riding like the jumps and such. Because I know mountain biking in even somewhat windy conditions is hell when flying off of jumps but since a dirt bike is heavier if it would be different.

Anyway,

go or no go?

go... and stay low on the jumps. You'll definitely notice the wind, but it's no reason not to ride...

Whenever it's really windy I try to focus on my cornering for the day because it gets pretty sketchy jumping stuff. Just remember your bike is basicly a sail and is going to want to blow out from under you.

that's the perfect time to practice your whips. They'll look 10x sicker with the wind helping you.

Kidding. Go practice your corners.

I broke my leg because of wind. Blew my wheels right on from under me on a medium double with a lot of air. Truthfully though, the wind wasn't the only factor. I over-jumped the double and was trying to line up for the corner. But I probably wouldn't have crashed in the same way were it not for the gust.

Wind creeps me out. Stay low and if you do jumps, use it as an opportunity to feel how the wind moves you in the air. Better to practice low and be aware than have it pop up during a race for the first time.

There is nothing scarier than being blown left to right (or vice versa) in mid air. I try to keep the jumping to a minimum when it's windy because you never know when a strong gust is coming. Working on corners is just as much fun and that's what makes you faster anyway. Be safe :-)

The key to jumping in the wind is leaning into the wind.

Turn your front wheel into the direction the wind is coming from. This will make the bike less of a sail, and act like a rudder, keeping you on course.

I went today. The good track that has big nice jumps that are mostly like double/table tops a little mix. was closed because of high winds.

I went to the crappy state park track right next door with bad jumps and everything. The dirt dried fast so it chunked up and was really dry. Since you can't really fly off of the jumps it wasn't a problem, I got in some good starting practice and corners though.
