Have been looking hard at the TM. 2 stroke 144MX in particular.
Anyone have any recent experience??

How does it compare KTM 125/150 performance and handling.

I do but on the enduro 144 version and only on trail riding. I will say that motor is fantastic; great bottom for a small bore, strong mid, revs forever. And while I have the previous gen chassis (new one should be even lighter and narrower) it blows the Austrian woods bikes away in the handling department imo. KYB forks stock are also a plus, no issues with the rear shock. I've been happy with it, would get another in a heartbeat.

Since TM builds their own shocks, are they using KYB internals or proprietary components?

Seal head I'm fairly certain a KYB one fits as it's 18mm shaft 50mm body, bladder I'm unsure of. Pistons I doubt are the exact same but there's no crazy proprietary diameters or anything.

Having spent some time on tm's in the past and owning one. Resale sucks for the higher  initial price even if it's on sale. You won't get back and have to take a serious loss on it.

They don't do anything better than other brands. The it's a works bike hand built bs is just sales hype. The history on not keeping a long-term importer means minimal dealerships around. Lack of aftermarket support hurts them.

And if you run into bike trouble shooting issues. That is bike specific your gonna be pretty much on your own.

There's a reason why you don't see many tm's around. And it's not just because they are harder to come by.

Have been looking them for years. They just look cool as hell and are an oddity. As with everything else MX related no financial logic is being used 😀

Meh there's really nothing special about them. Other than they are rare, I'd get a beta over a tm.

It’s the only “standalone” 144 made. All the others are big bore 125s. (It could use a different front fender, but still an awesome bike).

I have a thing for exotics and had a few tms. I had weird problems with them. Like cracked cases. Cracked hubs

I still think its a decent bike. Like previously said nothing special, but decent bike. Oem parts costs big money and not alot of aftermarket parts.

Most 2-stroke tm people ditch the efi and run a keihin carb.

My kid started 85s on a Tm .

We moved to an Austrian 85 and as a whole it was a better race bike without a doubt . Not as fast but a much better total package .

Ironically , the Gasgas is laid up right now because we can’t get parts for it . It’s a 25 and this year we could not get a chain slider , coil , front fender , or a stator .

He’s back riding the Tm , which we can get parts for .

Power is king in a small bore class, but obviously not the end-all. What things about the Austrian mini do you feel make it better overall?

It had more bottom end and a balanced comfortable chassis .

My kid jumped on the bike at horn rapids with no prep or set up really  and was immediately faster . I saw it mostly mid corner and how he looked in the air and downsizing things .

He said the tm was sick but hard to get into the ruts he wanted . Maybe we just can’t set up a bike lol

Try BFD Moto, they stock a ton of GG/Husky 85 parts.

One of the best bikes I have ever owned. And I've owned every brand but Kawi. The production quality is far superior to the Austrian (half Chinese) bikes. Parts availability is better as well.

I know this is about the 144, but Keefer just tested the 300 four stroke.
My son raced the 300 4t in Pro Endurocross a few years ago, Good to know our thoughts on the bike weren’t off base.  As a side not it was also the most reliable bike ever👍

They are closer to a Showa shock than KYB, the main piston is very similar to a Showa and the seal head takes a mix of KYB and showa seals and bushings from what I remember. The comp adj is different and not like any Jap stuff. Its a pita to get the shock off and just working on them kinda turns me off but I hear great things about them from the guys who have them and they seem to take a beating.

TM's are great bikes. They are set up well and have great components. They're not miles ahead of other bike brands, but definitely a quality machine. I had no issue getting parts for mine, although some parts that are proprietary were a little more expensive. My 144 was a little hard to jet, but once I had it dialled it was a total ripper.
