ive been around MX since i was a lil tiga and ive noticed how the same numbers always seem to pop up: 22 is a popular one. of course 69 for the goons. 101, 111, 911. If you have ever worked at a shop youll know that #1 is the most selling number. not because people run just #1, becuz its in a lot of numbers.. what about 420? that way sponsors know that you blaze it. (bad idea),,,unless you are trying to get sponsored by Graffix!

Slightly off topic; but how are AMA numbers assigned to overseas riders who did not compete in America this year?

For instance, what if Ken Roczen decided to run the West Coast Lites Class next year - what number would he be given to use? Assuming his FIM number is unavailable.

Less hypothetical; PJ Larsen (U.S. citizen but been racing in Australia) will be contesting the Lites Class in 2011 - how does the AMA work out a number for him?

when euros come over they have their pick of the 3 digit numbers, if they are available. heres a hypothetical one that will blow your mind: what if mx got bigger and there were 1000 licensed pros? would they add a letter, flattrack style?

I always ran 724, for my birthdate and always did pretty well with it.... when I switched form Honda to Kawi in 99 I picked up the bike from the dealer ion the way to the track (best way to break it in ofcourse) and all they had was a 2 and a 4. I figured what the hell ill run 24 instead. when i showed up to practice that night there were already 2 guys with 24 .... so what the hell ill run 42.... I had my best run with that number, infact, my call sign here in country that I requested and run is Blackjack 42!!!!

951 ! when i was younger i always had the #110 but when you got over 15 here in sweden all numbers between 1-320 are pro numbers. so i thought 951 looked cool.

I though it was standard to run the last 3 digits of your ama card,then the chance of running the same # as somebody else at a given race in you district was 1000/1.

I have 294. the 94 is for the year I was born (yes, I'm a little young). The 2 is for the class that I race, which requires a number in the 200's. I like the flow of it, though. It just kinda rolls out.

Only in a few states do they do that. Michigan is one of them and that is why you see some riders with 030 or similar. Always looks weird to have a 0 as the first digit but I guess they have no choice.

Grant Langston received 111 I believe because he had the #1 plate 3 times before hitting the US, hence the AMA gave him 111.

hahah, I grew up racing in Michigan at Baja Acres and Moorlands. When I had my first race I showed up with # 10 (my age at the time)on my bike and everybody gave me the gears. Being a "hosehead from Canada" they let me run 110 till my AMA card arrived in our mail box. My original # was 735 when I raced 80 jr and 80 sr, I broke my leg in 1989 and was out for a year . I forgot to remew my ama card, and when I started riding again Gran Morland had 735 and I had 390 when I raced 125 b. I kept it from 1992 till today, its rare and looks pretty good I think.... funny thing about the 0 first # numbers, my Dad was 010 in "woods senior".

I like 56, ran it from about my second year on riding. It was my username here during the motodrive days (jeffro56), but could never get a response during the transition from motodrive to vitalmx, so i signed in with 756 (which was my number one year when I ran am days at washougal).
