Who motos a Harley too?

Ive wanted an early 2000s road glide forever. I finally found one, an 05,  with some of the mods I would want. Risers and moto type bars obviously a must, but other stuff too like cut bags, floor boards, suspension, exhaust. Intentionally bought a stock 88 motor to feel out and maybe do a 95 kit in the winter.

Anyone else mess with these tanks?

Not a deal breaker, but I think that most of the Harley models switched to a 6 speed transmission between 2006-2007ish. I know that my 2006 Dyna was one of the first models to get it. Just something to think about if the price is close between 2 options.

Dynas and CVO's got the 6 speed in 06 and then in 07 the Touring bikes got the 6 speed and the 96 ci engine. In my opinion I'd try to get an 09 or later. In 08 the Touring models got fly by wire and the 09's got the improved chassis. As someone who was a Master Harley tech at that time the 09 came out I rode it and instantly bought one.

For the type of riding i intend on doing, everyone suggests the 5 speeds. Imagine the 6 would make long rides more pleasant tho. I wont be crossing the country on mine so im not too worried.

Isn’t the new chassis on the FL starting in 2010?

Also, they’ve recently released…’24 or ‘25(?) an actual legitimate NON-CLUNKING transmission. 🤣

For my money…I’d get whatever HD model/year is my absolute favorite & I’d S&S the living shit out of the motor and I’d get the best trans/suspension and drivetrain goodies available.

For example: in ‘21 they had an Icon Electra Glide Revival model with actual spoked wheels! Spokes…on an FL! And the bike looked good! If I was gonna do a “project”? I’d start with that or the original Fat Bob or Heritage model and go all out.

Build what you want.

Good luck!

Definitely not a "Harley guy" just like bikes. '05 Road King, big bore kit. Great bike to get around town and it's my psychiatrist when I can't get the moto bike out. Won't lie would be better with a 6 speed but my hiway trips are few. Just nice to chug around on. Have fun on whatever you decide  to get.1000002603 1

I have a few...if you're getting an 88 make sure you do the cam chest upgrade. The shoes will disintegrate and ruin your motor. Also 2000 thru 2002 had the better Timken lower ends in them. For the ergos hit up Thrashin Supply. Lance Coury and Cole Seely are/were moto guys.

Beautiful bike.

I’ve been looking at maybe getting something a little bit more suited for touring but haven’t gotten serious about it yet. I really don’t know enough about the differences between the touring bikes to know which would be best. The full dress Ultra Classic would be great for distance riding, but would probably not be something that I’d run around on locally. Love the look of most Road Glides, and the Street Glides also. I spent some time riding a Road King and the ergos were great for a bigger guy like me but I think for touring I’d probably want to get one with a real fairing instead of just a windshield.

How does the Street Glide compare to the Road King in ergos?  It looks like a lot of aftermarket parts are interchangeable, do they have the same frame dimensions?

I’ve got a sickness with bikes and am on a goal to try as many as possible while I can still ride.

I had a 2018 Road King and loved the bike. I liked seeing the road through the massive windscreen, I was more comfortable being able to see the pavement right in front of me.

I went on a Harley ride with the local shop for a 9/11 tribute and when I got back to the shop i saw this CVO and ended up going home with it.

It is an awesome bike but honestly I way overpaid for what it is. Beautiful and rides great (for a Harley) yea, much better than my Road King, no.

It is smoother and I found it had better wind protection even with the tiny screen. The fairing does help a lot on rides. With this bike the fairing turns with the bars The Road Hkide the fairing stays stationary so if you ever are choosing between those two models I suggest taking them for a test ride and see what you like.. I love the look of the Road Glide but when I rode one for a weekend as a loaner bike I did not care for the feel of the stationary fairing. Maybe I’d get used to it but for a weekend I didn’t care for it. And for my riding not being cross country trips I do not feel I need the massive luggage of the Electra glides.

Anyway I don’t know a lot about the bikes. I’m on my 6th Harley now and every time I go to a newer model they seem to improve. And I’ve never once had any mechanical issues with any of the HD’s. Standard maintenance and there can’t been one issue. They don’t even drip oil if you can believe that 😂

Anyway. I love them. I don’t dress up n the leather chaps or anything like that. It’s usually KTM sweatshirts (bright colors) or my Honda jacket for cooler rides. There is nothing quite like rolling on the power of a big bore Harley

btw I’m 6’3” and found the Road King, Street glide and Road glide all very comfortable for my size. They weigh a ton but as long as you don’t let it get started on tipping they are very easy to control at a light or coming to a stop. Seems like a very low center of gravity

That’s not a sickness Kenny. Don’t do that to us!😁. That’s just normal riders! How many bikes do you need/want asks the wife, One more is always the answer!

22 SGS here. 114 with a CR483 cam, aluminum intake (no more OE plastic), 5.5 injectors, Fuel Moto header with Khrome Werks 4.5 mufflers (2-1-2 system), PC3B, trued/welded crank, Ohlins shocks/Pro Action kitted forks, and KST 12” bars. Pic was before the mods other than the mufflers and shocks. Ultra-rare black paint. 😂IMG 7995 1.jpeg?VersionId=V7ls9Z5uHs6wBQJZk

No experience on the Road King, but I believe (?) that it’s fundamentally the same as the SG/RG other than the fairing, tank, and some other cosmetic stuff.

As far as Ultras vs SG/RG/etc, I’m obviously biased, but to me it’s hard to beat the flexibility of the Street and Road Glides. For shorter rides/around town, you can run with no tour pack, etc. For longer rides, a quick-release tour pack or razor pack will give you the extra storage of the ultra along with more passenger comfort (if you are riding two-up). I believe you can adapt a quick-release to an ultra, but they typically also have wiring (speakers, lights) that require quick-release adaptors as well.

Obviously if your common ride is long-haul, the Ultra might make more sense.

Just my .02.

I don't call myself a "Harley guy" because I like all motorcycles, but I do have a few Harleys.

My old man was a Harley guy for 30 years. Always told him the only Harley I’d ever want is a Softail Slim so I could put a purple renthal bar pad on it.

The 2008 is when they went to "Fly by wire" (But don't call it that) and in 2009 they put the new chassis on the bike with the wider rear tire. Far superior motorcycle.

All touring bikes ride on the same frame, everything is interchangeable. The big thing with the touring frames is the forks are behind the steering tube. This is what makes them absolute locomotives while eating up the miles on the interstate. I was told in Harley tech school that the factory test riders actually take their hands off at 80 mph or so and hammer the bars to the locks. The bike should shake its head at the most 3 times while it self-centers. Although not quite as radical I was riding down the road at 75-80 and the lane next to me was brand new asphalt about 4 inches higher than the surface I was riding on. I had my hands off the bars and directed the bike to that lane by foot pressure, and I'll be dammed but the bars jerked slightly when I hit the other lane, but it straightened itself right out.

My last Harley was an Electra Glide Classic that other than the fairing lowers and some excessive chrome was an Ultra. I put detachables on it and even quick release connectors for the rear speakers. I also used to sell seats for Mustang Seats during Daytona Bike Week, so I had 4 different seats to choose from. I could go from full boat touring bike with Tour Pak and super touring seat with driver backrest to a solo seat with no Tour-Pak in 10 minutes.

Here's a question for the Vital Harley guys: WTH is it with these clubs that get pissed if you pass them on a sportbike? I get that they wouldn't want a guy who's not in their club to ride within the group, or if they're on a curvy road and the sportbike guy passes like an asshole, of course. But some of those dudes get absolutely torqued if a sportbike goes by two or three lanes over. WTF? You don't own the road.

I had a little bar hopper (Nightster) sold it several years ago to a kid that worked with me. Bought a couple of Kawasaki‘s.

When the ‘original’ Nightster first came out (2007ish?), I thought that it was on a Dyna frame. I’d only seen a picture of one and didn’t read the name of it but went to the Harley dealership to try one on for size with the all-important wife’s blessing to buy one if I liked it…….

Imagine my disappointment when I found out that it was a Sportster with fork boots on it!

I tried to rationalize it in my mind but my wife was pretty adamant that it looked like I was sitting on a Honda Z50, and she was right.

I wish that I fit on a Sportster. I absolutely love the aesthetics of them usually and I think that I would have probably ridden twice as often as I used to if I had one in the stable.
