If aliens suddenly appear at my doorstep and ask “what is heavy metal”, I drop the needle on “War Pigs” and let the music do the talking.

Black Sabbath has been my favorite band for 40 years. If someone forced me to give up either Black Sabbath or all other music, I’d have to think about it. While “Paranoid” launched their careers, it was “Vol 4” that spoke to me most.

“When sadness fills my days,

it’s time to turn away

And let tomorrow’s dreams

Become reality in me…”

I’ve got “wicked world “blasting through the house right now.

Fuck they were good.

I vividly remember the first time I heard Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osborne when my dirt bike buddy played War Pigs for me in his room.

At that point in life, I did not know about the band, that was approximately 50 years ago.

What a legend, amazing he made it that far as so many others passed away in their twenties.

RIP Ozy.....

Here’s something funny along those same lines…

I heard and listened to a little Black Sabbath as a kid…but…many, many years later…

I took some kids from Redding to Ozzfest in 2004…Black Sabbath performed…and CRUSHED IT. Ozzy was on point…Black Label Society was amazing…hell, all the second stage bands were awesome.

From then on…Sabbath has been on my rotating playlist. The “Generals at Black Masses” message…is something that we all should hear…often…to keep us aware. Luke’s…Paranoid…all of it…good for your mind.

The Oz lives on.

I used to sing the first line of this song to my ex wife when she would climb up my ass about dumb shit.

There’s a bit of genius in that trick of yours…

You’ve abided by “A man’s gotta know his limitations” and you’ve found a great way to deal with yours.

I applaud you, good sir.

I know everyone has favorite and reasons why they like something.  Where they were and what was going on in life when the album came out.

These two are by far my fav Ozzy songs.

On the song 'Tonight',  Randy is playing an outro solo that just keeps going and going.  The engineers just let him keep going as they slooooowly faded the song.   If you put on headphones and turn up the volume as the song is fading,  you can hear the brilliance that Randy had.    His command of pinch harmonics and feedback thru completely overdriven Marshall tubes is unrivaled.   As amazing as EVH was,  even Eddie didnt milk feedback with feeling like Randy did.  That outro to me is his best ever captured,  and you have work to hear it.   I cant imagine what the Master sounds like without the fade.

To add to this thread, today I did a change from the norm......  In my workshop, my Sirius goes 24/7.  Having the normal routine of switching channels at various times a day, today was different.  I jumped over to Ozzy's boneyard (my preset #5), and it is a total walk down memory lane.  All morning, they have been playing non stop his best live shows from around the globe.  The number of top shelf musicians he has played with throughout the years is insane......  and these fuckers could provide the backdrop to Ozzy's performances....never over shadowing he.  Just a proud group of badasses letting him shine.  My setup in the shop can be loud if I wish, and today the JBL's are pounding.....  ALL DAY.  Folks have come in, and all except one, have not said a negative  word, as they all just say "Fuck Yes."  The one who did not approve of my shop pounding this morning, I just said, "Same door you walked through, will take you elsewhere as well....."  Ozzy is gonna rock my workshop the rest of the work week.  If you have Sirius, check out Ozzy's Boneyard channel.....  It is a treat.  God bless you Prince of Darkness......  Thanks for all the great times my friend.

BTW.....  I am blessed to have watched him live, albeit only once.  Years ago, Tulsa BOK Center, with Slash as the opening act.  One of the best shows of my life.......  Miss ya, buddy.

How many times can they fill me with lies and I listen again?
Twistin' the truth and they're playin' around with my head, okay
The things they will do and the things they will say, but they don't really understand
Tears fill my eyes when I hear all the cries for the reason today

And they don't really know even what they're talkin' about
And I can't imagine what empty heads can achieve

Leave me alone, don't want your promises no more
'Cause rock 'n' roll is my religion and my law
Won't ever change, may think it's strange
You can't kill rock 'n' roll, it's here to stay

Saw Ozzy on a Wednesday in Atlanta. Second row seats and wearing a German WWII helmet, spray painted black with “OZZY” in silver letters across the front. Around mid set I squeeze to the barricade, hold up the helmet which Ozzy dons while continuing to sing (don’t ask which song; I was paralyzed with joy). He hands the helmet back and people begin touching it like some sort of grail. All this happening in a maelstrom of sound and fury, led by an indomitable force of blond hair and a Flying V.

After thinking about it,  I have to amend my earlier list of favs.   This riff and crunch of this song is steeped in Iommi-Butler heaviness and just has to be mentioned.  There is no way Mike Inez coulda known when he was noodling around in the studio that he'd create such a timeless riff.

And of course,   Zakk steps up to the challenge (and honestly goes even further by using slide).

Two days after the show it’s Friday afternoon and I’m chilling in my bedroom (note: I’m a high school senior) when I see my buddy Derek walking up the street. Through the window I shout “Derek!  You going to Mark’s party”, and Derek replies “Dude, didn’t you hear?  Ozzy Osbourne’s dead!”  I reply “Man, he ain’t dead!  Saw him two nights ago!”  Derek says he heard Ozzy died in a crash and I’m thinking “no way”.

So everyone meets at Mark’s place and the rumor mill now says Tommy Aldridge was dead. So we turn to the only authority who would have the real deal:  96Rock. It’s confirmed soon after that indeed Randy Rhoads, the only man to dare challenge Eddie for the throne, who entered the scene like a bolt of lightning and twice as fast, had met his fate in Leesburg, Florida. It was a surreal evening.

First time I saw Ozzy was this tour(ironically called the "No More Tours" tour lol).

Sadly only remember bits and pieces, seemed the whole place had a "let's get fucked up for Ozzy" vibe lmao.

Luckily a couple years later a friend won front row(pit) Ozzfest tickets on the radio. I handled myself better that time 😆

Ozzy was just like everyone has said. One of the coolest people that gave everyone stories beyond his own.

Just watched the live-stream of Ozzy's funeral procession stopping at Black Sabbath bridge.  Sharon and the kids got out to place a flower with the rest from fans,  really sad moment.   Sharon looks wrecked,  cant help but wonder how long she is gonna last without him around.

Watching the funeral procession today thru Birmingham was kinda awesome…awesome in the sense that so many have taken the time to recognize that this man had left such an obvious impression on the world.

The dude wasn’t just a Rock Star…

He was our representative of a lifestyle.

Beyond the music and the tv shows…he was a living example of “Fuck it! Just go out and DO it! Say it! Be it! Fight for it!”

From Black Sabbath on thru his music made at the very end…the message was always there.

Many of us are very fortunate to have shared it…to have witnessed it. To have lived it.

Thanks Ozzy! ✌🏼
