I picked up a 1984 CR250 from the original owner recently. Located a couple miles from me. Figuring on restoring it, anything special that would be cool? I'm not really a Honda guy so I never paid much attention to them. I have a powdercoater advertising on my website that has the real honda orange-red replica for those years so I figure on doing that at least.

I tore it down a little mainly to make sure the water pump areas were ok. That's all I've done so far.

How bad is the waterpump cover or did you dodge a bullet and have a good one on it?

Seems ok. The area where the impeller is has some pitting but I think it is functional. The bike was running when I got it and not spilling coolant into the oil. I think my buddy Darin talked to you about the '83 CR his friend has with that problem.

You got Lucky
1985/86 covers are still available from Honda but the 84 is discontinued.

I bet you could get a hundy for that PC front # plate

If you need any tests on it.
Just ask, I have been scanning tons of old mags lately

Not out of the "water" yet, haha! I need to replace the mechanical water pump seal so hopefully I don't crack it or anything getting that out!

Thanks for the tip on the front plate, I almost threw it away.

I noticed that the brake line is routed worng, should go behind the fork so it protects the line. I am sure that you know this already.

I will give you $1.00 for the plate. Har

This place used to have new aftermarket waterpump seals.

Maybe try and find out what happened to them.

Don't ride it until you do a top end they had no exaust bridge in 84 they would munch pistons if the top end gets loose.Other than that that bike rips.

I was at the Hangtown national in 84 when Alan King won the 250 overall with a 2-2 finish for Team Tamm...

i say you should put sme blue fork boots on it...it will protect the forks from dirt gettin into the seals and it will give it an old scool lookCool

Bill163 is very right. Make sure you have a good chamfer on the exhaust port. Everyone I knew with those bikes were spitting pistons.

They were great bikes

Thanks for the tip on the exhaust bridge. I ran it only enough to know that it runs.

Bike is nearly to the frame. Anyone know what modern (wide) footpegs will fit on it? Both pegs are bent up so I figure I might as well get wider ones when replacing.

One other thing -- I think the ATAC connecter rod is broken. Is it supposed to go across the bottom of the cylinder than then screw in? Looks like there is a tab there that is broken off. What's the chances of finding that piece to replace?

(EDIT) Nevermind, looked online and that part is still available OEM

I'd check with your local Honda guy to make sure.....OEM Honda parts are pretty sketchy after 20 yrs old, and that was basically a 1-yr ATAC system.

The exhaust bridge/piston grenade was an early problem, no doubt, but the '84's did run pretty good. Especially with a PC pipe/silencer combo!!

Am I right, or what??? What about the bottom row "extra's"??

Work on the bike is slowing down because I've been out riding a lot. Frame is freshly powdercoated though!

One thing I remember on that bike is that it turns on a dime. But, I had a Husqvarna, at the time I rode the 84 CR250...anything turns better than a Husky, old or new !

I loved my 84. I remember going through clutches way to often though. You scored Pit!

Yeah...I think that was pre good oils...the Clutches were a lot different back then. But, I think Honda did have the best for the time.
