Ulnar Nerve Sub muscular Reposition

Has anyone had this surgery done and been able to ride again. Back in late March I was moving a bunch of heavy furniture for work and my arms started feeling weird. A week later my right hand lost all strength and started getting claw hand and has muscle atrophy happening. Went to my hand specialist who confirmed a compressed ulnar nerve which needs surgery ASAP. Now that riding season is here I feel so shafted not to do what I love all because of something I did at work. Has anyone had this type of surgery with feedback to share.

Same issue, didn't have surgery, wore a brace to bed that kept arm straight for about 3 weeks and seriously helped the issue.

I fixed my ulnar issue with a good chiropractor and a shit ton of stretching, the issue for me stemmed from the neck which was misaligned and compressed.

Yes, had it done about 3 years ago.  My symptoms were the outermost two fingers on my left hand were going numb.  It was going to progressively get worse over time, so I decided to get the surgery.  I had the surgery - they relocated the ulnar nerve from behind/outside the elbow to the inside, using a piece of muscle as something like a 'sling' to hold it up and keep it in place on the inside.  I didn't see any immediate improvement, but over the course of I'd say 2 years the numbness/tingling I was feeling slowly went away.  Today I have a very, very slight amount of tingling in my left pinky finger.  Apparently it takes a long time for nerves to heal and repair themselves.

Other than the high cost, I have no regrets.  Happy to talk about it in more detail if you like, drop me a DM with your number and I'll give you a call.

Having the same issue no strength in my left pinky and ring finger, that surgery sounds aggressive, have been trying nerve flossing and stretching haven't had much success though

That was my experience as well - nerve flossing and other PT techniques, wearing a brace at night to keep arm completely straight, anti-inflammatories, steroids, etc.  Tried everything I could think of short of surgery and nothing seemed to help.

I had ulnar nerve surgery, my doctor did not relocate the nerve bu ground down the bone where the nerve was compressed in the elbow. I was done with racing by then but I can tell you it did not affect my strength. I only have slight numbness in the area of the elbow where it was cut into. don't worry you will be fine.

I had surgery done 10 or so years back.  Didn’t have to relocate the nerve.  It wasn’t fun trying to recover.

This definitely doesn’t sound like it’s going to be easy to recover from, from what I’m reading. I’m not getting any numbness or tingling, mine when straight to weak hand and muscle atrophy. The doctor wants to put the nerve inside the elbow held by muscle like Motodad32 had done. Doc also said it can take 18 months to recover since nerves recover very slowly. Going to be fun fun from what I’m reading.

For what its worth, my recovery wasn't bad at all.  The first day or two was rough, but after that it was pretty troublefree.  Back to normal in about a month after the wound was fully healed and stitches removed.

This is what I’m wanting to hear that not all these surgeries are doom and gloom.

Done two never ops on both arms. Outer elbow ulnar for getting numb, and upper inside fore arms for lost strength in pinky +1 finger.

Ride after two weeks. Problem pretty much gone.

I know I'll ask my Dr also but how do you tell if it's a nerve issue or a tendon issue, again I have no strength in left pinky and ring finger... I think it's from how I hold my phone because sometimes they'll go numb in that position but aside from that don't really get much tingling

The did an EMG and I have muscle loss in my hand along with my ring and pinky finger having a slight clawing now. Median Nerve is compressed in the elbow area  not letting the signal get to my hand muscles to activate for strength and fine motor skills.

Yes, had it done in 2004. Prior to the surgery, I had lost all strength and feeling in the last two fingers and most of my hand on my left side. Nerve was relocated and after recovering everything went back to about 90% perfect. Recovery was not too bad for me and I remember being back to racing in about 3 months. Kept racing until 2019 with only minor nerve issues in the hand that was related to the original problem. Will say too, I also had a ulna nerve decompression surgery in my neck that was related to my left hand issue as well as a left wrist reconstruction. The most definitive fix for me though was the nerve relocation in my elbow. Good luck with it, hope this helps

Jan 2011 surgeon cut on my funny bone for 2 3/4 hrs another incision on the outside to work on the ligaments. That didn’t hurt after surgery but the nerve Wow that was high nerve pain 24/7.  My pinky is 100% numb next finger 80% from those 2 fingers threw my hand into my wrist is numb .  1 yr for full recovery I had to get back to work at 5 months.

I broke my elbow really bad when I was like 13 or 12. It was just straight cornflaked the whole way through (450 fell out of the sky and crushed just my elbow).

They had to move my ulnar nerve just to put it back together, took years to work normally again and I was 12 not exactly a slow healer. Nerve pain, etc. They cut my tricep in half also which didnt help lol.

Surgery is scheduled for June 17th….my bike number is 17. Stopped at the store today to buy some stuff pertaining to my surgery and the total was $17.17. I said to the cleak…did you say $17.17. lol. I hope this is a sign that everything is going to work out and I will be healed up soon. Thank you guys for all your feedback. Send more stories of your experience and rehab with getting back on the bike because it helps reading those post.

I woke up this morning on my stomach with my left arm bent almost as far as it can, my pinky and ring finger as numb and tingly as ever. It took a bit to wake it up.

I'm thinking I better try and sleep with my left arm straight too. If I can't consciously do it I better look into some sort of brace.

Left pinky has been half numb for a few months now. Hasn't limited me, but it's annoying at times. I figured it was the ulnar nerve.... From some reading, seems it can happen from too much cell phone usage (bent arm) or leaning on your elbow a lot, which I was doing a lot at my desk at work. Sucks that my otherwise active life doesn't counter those hours of sedantary stress on my joints haha.

As of now I'm just consciously trying to avoid aggravating it further and hoping full feeling comes back. If it gets worse down the line I'll see a doc.

I tried one of these, didn't help at all.  Hope you have better luck.

I was in same situation as you - when I finally went to the doc I was told that it'd never get better on its own, and in fact it would continue to deteriorate and symptoms would become worse over time.

If you think you'll end up doing the surgery at some point or other, my recommendation is to not delay and just do it now.  The longer you wait the worse it will get, and the less recovery you'll be likely to experience following the surgery.
