Another one? Oh man
Sounds like a rotor "defenestration".
Horrific. How does a rotor detach from the fuselage without an impact of sorts? Do yourselves a favor-don’t watch the video of the wreckage plummeting into the Bay.
Many possibilities that wouldn't require impact.
I won't speculate.

Some of the comments are saying that was the sixth flight in a row for that helicopter and maintenance may have gone unattended. Again, comments, not verified.
I watched the video……yeah, it sucked.
I found out our daughter worked side by side with the pilot for 3 years when she was on the Reagan. That one was close to home as they say. Upset and bummed is an understatement. RIP😞
OMG😢 Very sorry to hear that. What are the odds!
Just sucks all the way around.
Yeah she called and I could tell she was bummed then she told us. Yeah the whole thing sucks, the rotors are not supposed to fly off.
I guess it happens though. When I was a kid growing up in Redondo I remember it happened and one of the blades landed on a crowded beach, I don't remember if anyone was hurt or not. My dad was working at N. American Rockwell at the time and was going off about it
The "Teeter Rotor" was kind of notorious for that.
I know a pilot that said it was cool though because they had an indicator that would beep and light up just before the rotors came through the cabin.
Oh that's nice, what is it like a big red led that says "DUCK" ?
No, it was Bell 206L (longranger)
This is a strange one. The tail boom had separated from the machine and it dropped like a stone. Some of the vids that I've seen indicates that the pilot had initiated some steep climbs and then nosed over the give the Pax a sense of negative G's which is asking for shit ( if that was the case)
I'd Hazzard a guess and say some mast bumping took place and the main rotors severed the tailboom off. The machine dropped inverted without the main rotor blades.
It could not have been LTE ( loss of tail rotor effectiveness) as any experienced pilot should be able to deal with that situation with altitude and forward speed. This guy had enough of both.
Sad, really sad and may they all Rest in Peace.
Saw a headline that said the ceo of Siemens was on board.
https://www.cnn.com/2025/04/11/us/hudson-helicopter-crash-what-we-know-intl-hnk/index.html
He was a CEO for a subsidiary of Siemens.
Nothing wrong with 6 flights in a row or even 20 in a row as long as they have sufficient fuel (JetA1)
The pilot will perform a pre - flight inspection before the first flight of the day which is really a visial inspection of all the bits n bobs on the machine.
AME's (aircraft maintenance engineers) take care of the actual hands on work.
The are various stages of maintenence with the first being the 100 hr MPI. (Mandatory periodic inspection). Thereafter. 600hr etc. The Alison turbine will have its own schedule, same with the gearbox, airframe etc. I don't know the Part 91 FAA regs. Commercial Aviation is really safe and in most cases it's human error that is the net result of accidents and incidents.
Condolences to all effected with this tragic event.
Yup, he was, so was his wife and their three kids.
I appreciate the explanation, Boom. Sounds like you have an A&P license or an extremely healthy knowledge of aircraft. Lol
I have a passion for Aviation and in particular helicopters. Was rated on these fine machines - UH-1H, B206, B206L, S313, R44 and R22 but no longer fly. Licence lapsed 16 some years back. I was not smart enough to pass the commercial exams so I eventually gave it up.
Pit Row
At least you still have the wherewithal to explain technical things to a layperson like myself and others. Although, I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night so I’m feeling pretty good about myself.
Yeah, kinda what I meant in my redneck aircrafter vernacular.
"The rotor left the A/C". Why is up to the investigators.
Edit: "Defenestration" literally means "To throw out of a window". IE; The dude was pissed at his wife and she was defenestrated from the 27th floor.
A Frightening and Tragic mechanical, that took an entire family and the Pilot.
We had an accident at a Sea World here back in 2023, that a (final?) report has just come out on.
Two "Joy Filght" 'Copters hitting each other. One 'Copters passengers survived, the others, I think, didn't. It was such a strange ( well, Stupid) thing to happen. Much of it has been put down to inoperative radios, on the 2 new, 1 week in service Helos, but the Take Off and Landing Pads, and the 'patterning' of flights / flight paths, really seemed glaringly foolish.
Not sure if this will play / be accessible :
