My 60 hour '24 YZ450F has been running pretty odd lately and I am not sure which direction to go. Hoping to gather some ideas as to why from someone who may have had something similar happen. Here goes...

What it's doing:

When the bike gets hot during longer motos, it starts to run really rough. The engine feels really heavy on decel, almost like my foot is dragging the rear brake or I'm in a gear lower than what I am, and it feels dirty on acceleration like a poorly jetted carb used to feel. Down low it feels like it's struggling to go, but then does eventually go leading to a bike that I feel like I can’t really trust. It's an odd sensation to be sure.

Things I've done:

The first day I noticed it I did the following as soon as I got home…
- Drained fuel and replaced with new 93. I always run pump gas
- Changed oil
- Checked coolant. Not low and not dirty.
- Checked valves. Perfectly in spec
- New spark plug
- Swapped air filter (it was clean and not overly oiled. I replace it every ride if needed anyhow)
- Inspected and cleaned ECU and surrounding connectors (they were clean and corrosion free)
- New Hinson clutch plates/fibers 🤷‍♂️
- Swapped out TPS per a suggestion from a buddy and adjusted accordingly.

I have ridden the bike a few times and nothing I have done so far has had an effect. The bike always runs great for the first part of the day. Bike runs perfect during short warm up motos. Runs great during longer, mellow motos. When I try putting in heaters though during a LitPro national, after about 5 laps, things go south pretty quickly.

I had a buddy ride it on one occasion (up and down a straight away, in crocs lol) and he thinks it's all in my head. It’s not!

I haven’t tried a fuel filter or pump so I suppose that’s next, but any guidance from folks who may have had a similar issue would be fantastic. Thank you 🙏

Check your gas tank vent hose. I know mine was easy to kink right at the cap. After reading a tip on here, I cut a little of the nipple off on the gas cap and that lets it bend easier without folding over. Not saying that's what it is for sure, but something to check.

Mine does bend and fold over. It's something I have always noticed as well, but didn't consider it to be a deal breaker. I will for sure check it though as it certainly won't hurt to ensure it doesn't get choked out 👍

Every once is awhile there is a weird electronic glitch with some of these bikes.  I've heard of others with the same weird stuff.

Keefer had some weird issues and he traced it to the coolant sensor in the head.  Swapped it out and his bike was back to normal.

I don't recall all his symptoms but maybe worth a shot as that sensor doesn't cost that much $$$.

If that doesn't work could be worth trying someone's ECU to see if that clears things up.  Anyone with a Vortex ECU might have a stock ECU sitting in the parts bin they might let you borrow for troubleshooting.

I reached out to Keefer on day 1 and he thought my symptoms sounded strange, but didn't have any insight. Maybe his happened within the last few weeks? Or maybe I wasn't as good at explaining it when it initially happened. Any idea where you heard/read that? I'd like to check it out to get a better idea of what he did if at all possible.

If anyone has a stock ECU they'd like to send me for testing, I'd be happy to pay to ship and for the trouble 🙏

It was on one of his podcasts a while back, not recently.

Send me a PM. Might be able to help you out on the ECU.

Handlebar switch may have gotten moisture inside and corrosion.  Pretty common.

Also may be getting low fuel pressure.

I like the idea about the coolant temp sensor also.  Cheap and easy to rule out.

A few things to check, but it’s hard to diagnose online ya know…

Cam chain tension?
Coolant sensor

Dirty injector

Fuel pump

Map/kill switch moisture

here is the part keefer talked about replacing on one of his podcasts the stock one is plastic and will deform/melt when it gets hot and cause problems, and it sounds like your problems are related to long hot motos.

the injectors on all modern bikes are so small even the smallest particles can gunk them up.  ive run one of these in my tank since day one and havent had any starting/running issues that many other people in my riding group have had.  cheap and preventative.

Definitely tough to diagnose online. Ideally I was hoping to find some folks who may have had similar symptoms and had resolved their own issues. I do appreciate the suggestions though 👍

Yeah, it really only presents when the bike is hot, which leads me to assume it's some sort of sensor.

That plastic part is something I've seen melt before so likely a good investment either way, but that part doesn't include the sensor as well, does it? I assumed that was just the elbow fitting.

That fuel filter is interesting. Might add one just for good measure.

That oil has been needing to get out of there for quite a while.....looks like it finally lost patience and decided to head out the countershaft seal.

Ah, I see. I've had one go bad on this gen bike before as well. Something they did with the motor design does seem to make them a bit more unreliable, but the good news is it's a quick and easy fix.

Not sure why it's so dark... only a few hours on past oil change.

Did you really do a piston at 10 hours? If so, any additional information that prompts that maintenance schedule? No sarcasm, just curious.

No lol. My bike literally just has 10.57 hours on it from new. The oil is dark, I'm at about 4 hours on current oil so maybe I need to do it every 2-3 hours. I know the seals go out but never had one go nearly this early.

well I did a vet thing...got a steal on some enzo a kit forks and shock, xtrig clamps, phds, changed the springs front and rear for my weight but left the pro valving in from the previous rider.  and all I have to say is wow.  I was skeptical it would be worth it for someone my speed and weekend warrior but the change was more then i expected and in different areas then i thought.

I imagined it would be like riding around the track on pillows but it wasnt.  It was a little bit better COMFORT wise(entry and exit bumps, track chop) then my revalved stock KYB.  The real change was noticed on the bottoming resistance and the comfort on jump landings.  I jumped to flat and purposely came up short on a few things to try and get the forks to bottom.  I couldnt the rubber marker ring never got closer then 1.5-2in from the bottom.  So it improved comfort and the performance for o shit moments was night and day different.

Id say the biggest change though was in the cornering, the best way to describe it was the front wheel felt like it had its own motor digging the tire into the ground and dumbbells on the forks.  It felt so planted no matter if it was flat, muddy, rutted, blue groove.(yes this track has all those in the span of 1 day lol)  The amount of feel and confidence in the front end is something i never felt before and wasnt expecting.  but the bike was still light and flickable i could carve tighter mid corner if I wanted.

EDIT** yes i know the stickers say FC, there was some drama which i wont get into but the internals and all work were done by enzo

Got it lol. I was just curious because it looks like the trip had been reset one hour ago. I've been doing mine every 3-4 but accidentally let it go once till 7 hours. Wasn't paying attention but it hasn't had any issues yet. Pretty surprising your CS seal went out with 10 hours on it... Hope it's good to go once you get it replaced!
