I am a huge 2-stroke fan and love my used CR250 I bought but Honda doesn't care about what is being sold on craigslist. In order to keep these bikes coming from the OEM's they need to be bought. As soon as my student loans are paid off I'm pinning it to the closest shop with a brand new 250 2-stroke on the floor.

2009 Yamaha YZ250 (Purchased new January 2010 - Only change for 2010 BNG)

I plan on renewing my KTM 300 next year and hopefully Yamaha will move past BNG so if my son chooses to stay blue it will be really new. Really liking the KTM 150 for the younger one. We'll see...

kudos to KTM and Husky both are updating their two strokes, and husaberg just came out with an all new 250. Don't give yamaha any credit! I would buy a ktm 250 over a yamaha, and a husky 125 over any 125, and husaberg just came out with one so we'll have to see.....

The introduction of the new 2 Stroke models by Husaberg is the best possible confirmation of an expanding 2 stroke market on industry radar. It just doesn't get any better than this. Real "Money where your mouth is" type stuff.

Likewise, the continuation of the YZ models through the "Double Displacement, Soft Tail Sportsters Only" mowercross period, (2006 - 2009) was in my view, an expression of both faith and business prudence on Yamaha's part. Rn'D did not need to continue at the same pace while most of the remainder of the industry dialed back compitition by discontinuing their 2 stroke offerings, especially with the excellent and class leading YZ platform already in place. I for one am grateful that Yamaha chose to supply us holdouts with such bling bristling finery through the ice age.

If there is in fact an expanding potential for 2 stroke sales on industry radar now, this is the time to look to Yamaha for exciting changes and updates to their 2 stroke models. For the past few years, the excitement had to come from the fact that they shrugged off the rest of the big 4 and kept on keeping on.

I don't think the 2 stroke is gone, it's just in hibernation right now. We have all seen the articles posted on sites like this one showing that there are still people out there doing R and D on them. I just wonder, when they do come back with all the new bells and whistles, will we all have sticker shock. I mean the YZ 250 is only $1000.00 less than the YZ450F this year.

Which is better in all of your opinions, the YZ or the KTM?

Dirt rider seems to think the SSS suspension and the aluminum frame are the shit, but then they rave on the KTM's power.

I haven't ridden a late model KTM 250 two stroke so I have nothing to compare the YZ with.

What do you guys really think?

Having had both bikes I can say this..The KTM is odd to set up with the link less shock, once you get a feel of which way the clickers need to go to make it work, its on par with the yamaha susp. wise(Both bikes need to be resprung for my weight). The KTM feels slower till you change the powervalve spring and add a muffler.. Once you do that its faster than my fully built YZ250 ever thought about being(and it will run off pump gas).. I have had older KTM's and my 2010 corners extremely well compared to them, or even the YZ250 for that matter.. The KTM seems to have more traction on the front wheel than the yamaha as you start to lean into a corner...The ONLY complaint I have about the KTM is the notchy shifting under power... Shifts have to be planned in advance.

Looks like 250 2T's are capable of still leading. Just think if Yamaha did a minimal update or made a real WR250 from the current YZ250.

OK. 1st post, please be gentle I'm an old man..sort of. Anyway, after spending tens of thousands of dollars on 4-Strokes for my now 16 year old son over the last 3 years I took the challenge and put My Money where His Mouth is..Haha. Actually, we typically go thru about 3-4 bikes a year and they have all been great thus far. But the maintenance costs just seem to be getting out of hand. So for fun, practice and some local racing I decided to get him a 2010 Yamaha YZ250. I did a rediculous amount if research and we rode both KTM and the YZ. Both bikes were great, the KTM did hit harder but the feel didnt fit his style. So I bought the YZ and ordered a PC Works Pipe, R-304 Silencer and a V-Force V3 to hopefully make up for the 4 HP disadvantage against the KTM. I will let you know what comes of this experiment. He is a pretty fast intermediate so I think this will be a good a pretty good test. I'll keep you posted. And while I think its a long shot I really hope the Two-Stroke makes a comeback.

I kinda thought that I might get an answer in KTMs favor having read a bunch of reviews. That's the same answer I get from most dudes, the KTM is "odd" with the suspension setup until worked out. But all the mags seem to rave on the Katoom's power.

My bike's an '04 KX250 which won't last forever. The next bike I get will be another two stroke. I'm used to riding them and love the characteristics of them. Four strokes just seem too heavy for me (although I've gotten a face full of roost from the guys riding them from time to time...) And the motor just "sounds" like it wants to blow when ridden hard. I know that's obviously not the case, but I can't shake the feeling. It actually makes me back it down a little instead of hitting it further. Hell, if I break it I buy it I guess... And I ain't rich!

But thanks again for responding. Next bike will be coming soon, and I want to get the right one.

Yes that is true but that is not the point. The Pro class is filled with 450's to include KTM, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki's even a Honda or two. Husaberg beat them all, what say you?

This is a 250 Smoker that is making some sense of the whole "keeping the 2-Stroke" alive thing. Bottom line is save the 2-Stroke!

Update...1st weekend was awesome. My son said he had the most fun ever on a bike. He went from an RM85 directly to the 250F so he had never owned a 2 Stroke Big Bike. He did test one gently for a couple of laps but that was it. And while the suspension was pretty good with some simple adjustments we sent it out for our usual set up. Anyway, the bike flat out rips and I got some pretty good pictures and I will attempt to upload them later tonight. If we get the suspension back in time he will race it this weekend and see what it can do.

My answer to that is "no" as the new YZ250 is pretty much the same as my 2006.

I dig 2strokes but I'm not going to go out and buy the same bike I already have just to send a message to Yamaha that I appreciate them still selling 2 strokes.

Now, with you still riding a CR250...I can see how you'd need to upgrade to a YZ Smile

The 2011 KTM 250SX is pretty much impossible to find. The bike is very popular as people are pretty much paying more attention and for the average track day enthusiast it just plain makes more sense. I'd even argue it makes more sense for a young guy putting in a lot of races against 450s as the 2 stroke will ultimately allow more laps and time riding while all along learning better technique.

Think about this for a moment and explain to me anyone would overlook the sole modern 2 stroke (this is not a jab against the excellent 350F either):

This past weekend at Round 8 of the National Hare Scramble Series in Cortland, NY Yamaha rider Jason Greer piloted his 2010 Yamaha YZ250 to the Beaten Trails National Hare Scramble Overall beating Mike Lafferty aboard his 450 Husaberg. The pass for the win was made towards the end of the 3+ hour event.

Jason on his YZ250 also claimed the holeshot again!

Podium:

1. Jason Greer Yamaha YZ250
2. Mike Lafferty Husaberg 450
3. Sorry - Name? Yamaha YZ250

2-Strokes are alive and well. Any truth to the rumor of a 2012 CR250 EFI (w/out headhake?)
