Check out these two pictures of Austin Howell. In one he is running number 5 (250A), the other 29 (450A). Anyone know why he would use different numbers for different classes?

I think his regular # is 29.. From looking at the 250A roster (which is the class he's running #5) I'd say it's because Jacob Williamson is running #29. I'm not sure how they decide who gets seniority for a # but the ironic part is Williamson has DNF'd both motos.

i'm guessing because he couldn't use the same number for some reason or another since he was not the other guy and the other guy had the other number since he couldn't run his regular number. or not...

I thought the whole point was to be given a number that you can run in both classes and not have to switch plates and bibs every other moto.

Another reason could be that 1-10 are earned numbers from the prvious year. In 2009, Austin was 4th in 250 p/s, 5th in 250A.

From the loretta lynn q & a page:
QUESTION: Can I request a number for the National?
◦ANSWER: Yes you can. We will try very hard to accommodate your request. Top ten numbers can only be used if you earned that number in the same class the previous year.

Props to Austin for his finishes this year. Good kid.I've gotten to know him and his family this year at REM. His Dad is very cool and his Sis sings a great National Anthem. Keep on truckin' Austin!

The number is because he earned a top 10 in the class the previous year. He chose to run it and switch since he can't run it in the other class as he didn't earn it there.
