Exactly my point- those conflicts you mention ended because we went to war against them. We basically bombed them into submission to get unconditional surrender.
So unless you think it is a good idea to start WW3 with a nuclear capable opponent, Ukraine and Russia will have to make a deal and any deal involves concessions.

I see what you mean about it being different with unconditional surrender and the stakes being different with nuclear forces. However, appeasement was largely what led to WW2 in the first place. Not sure why you’re getting downvoted voted for this. It’s true. The “aid” sent to Ukraine was mostly mothballed military equipment taking up space in military caches. The aid bills included huge outlays for US contracts to replenish our own resources. Congress used the opportunity to spend more money domestically.
That’s the basis of the grift. The US, from day one, put its own interests first. Now every day this war continues is a day with more dead Russians, more dead Ukrainians, and more rich Americans. Best case scenario, they annihilate eachother and the markets for cheap minerals and grain totally. The US was never on anyone’s team.

So, when Ukraine started attempts to join NATO, wouldn't it have been a near existential concern for Russia for two important reasons:
1) The European Plain which runs through Ukraine and is a huge invasion threat to Russia from the West
2) The main warm water port for Russia in Sebastapol would be threatened by NATO ships having access to the waters off Ukraine in the Black Sea
