I used to like GL a lot, his outdoors commentary and input was great. But during his whiskey throttle time his white South African male would come out a bit too much. I'd still love to see him come back to outdoors or even SX booth but doubt it would ever happen.

i like johnny hopper bc he's self aware, candid, and light hearted. GL is the GOAT color analyst. he did this monologue off the cuff on roczen's riding during the outdoors a few years ago that was pure poetry. gypsy is fine and has his market. i don't find him that authentic or listenable, but he's fine. ping is/was good, but goes out of his way to insert politics when he shouldn't, even though i agree with his views most of the time. i used to respect cooksey's boldness, but realized it was coming from a resentful place that is just completely toxic to listen to. being socially ostracized can create a negative feedback loop that just makes somebody more and more bitter the more negative reactions they get. it can get very dangerous and not in the words hurt theater kid kinda way.
I find it funny how Steve was just bitching about the sue happy society we live in and how it’s an American problem only to find out that he a Canadian tried to sue Yamaha for working him to much.
i didn't know DonM was Swap either. i thought he was low-T geriatric in his 80s given how crotchety alot of his retorts are. definitely does not give off cool guy industry bro vibes; at least it doesn't come across that way on the forum to me. sorry swap...

Don't get distracted by who posted the video; listen to what GL is saying, and ask yourself who is getting a paycheck.
GL, much like DV12, do not rely on a paycheck from the industry, so they can speak their minds. Weege, Matthes, Gypsy, Vital, et al. have too much to lose to speak theirs.
I watched most of it. I like listening to GL's candid comments but find it interesting that he had been on Pulp multiple times in the past, "Slong shot". He didn't seem to have an issue with "Steve Mattress" back then. I wonder what triggered this or if GL was simply holding his nose to be on the show in the past? Interesting.....

Motocross is filled with very incompetent people. The agents, media members, former racers now running industry companies, lower rung race teams...it's extremely bush league.
The industry is very lucky that their fan group is so dedicated to the sport because the fans suffer through a lot. The broadcast and RDL has improved greatly, but we suffered for a long time there. Press conferences are unbearable. The podcasts are hard to listen to at times. The YouTube channels are out of control. The normal practice from teams and riders is to withhold information about the bikes and riders.
The fan that has been glued to this sport since they were a child doesn't really have a place to go that isn't full of BS. This site is the best spot to discuss the sport with like-minded people, but it brings out a lot of shitty banter. You have to sort through a lot of BS to get to fruitful discussion.
I've learned to take it all for what it is. I enjoy the racing as the riders and bikes just keep getting more badass, but I don't put any weight into podium interviews, social media posts, interviews, etc. It could be easy to get hung up on what Deegan says and form an opinion on him, but it's a lot more entertaining to watch it all play out for entertainment value. The riders and industry folks are put on too much of a pedestal.
If you can emotionally detach from it all and take it for what it is, it's pretty damn entertaining to watch the insanity play out. A lot of the notable figures in the sport are basically South Park characters.

Cooksey at least has balls to piss off industry people with what he says if he believes it to be true. I know collectively this forum hates him, but I've been watching his stuff for years and I can see why you guys bash him sometimes, but he also doesn't give a shit who he pisses off and is willing to speak his truth.
I know ML and Cooksey have some history but I don't know any details. But I do agree with other posters that state that the Vital crew is waaaaaaaaaay too close to the riders and OEM's and toe their narrative far more than necessary.
edit - at the 52m mark he (summarized) says: "I don't agree with everything say Cooksey, but I agree with a lot of it. And I think that out moto media knows what you're saying is true but since you'e the only one saying it, they can call you crazy and ignore you."
edit 2 - just finished the whole thing. GL is a legend in our sport and was hugely popular as an announcer. In this interview he says:
- matthes has zero cred
- cooksey speaks the truth
- mirtl is innocent
- Feld is dirty
- He agreed with much of what Cooksey says about DC
- our moto media is garbage
- Vital is like TMZ
- ..........amongst other things.
ALL of these are in direct opposition to the general Vital mindset on these topics. How do we feel about a legend GL disagreeing with the overall perceptions that the board holds?

I understand Cooksey is a bit out there and is definitely scorned and resentful of the industry. Listen to the interview with Grant Langston. He basically steps back and lets GL talk. GL has been on all sides of this industry and knows all the players and figures. Everyone has their opinion and they all stink but it's worth a listen. You can crack on Cooksey's credibility all you want and he's a bit of an over-dramatic cook but GL has massive credibility and does all of the talking and puts out all of the ideas. Cooksey isn't leading him into half-agreeing with statements to spin a narrative. GL is guiding the ship this time.
side bet: GL is never welcome on Gypsy or any other major podcast again.
