OK, somewhat of an annual tradition is the "Getting ready for LL's" thread.

I try to dig out of my brain all of the FAQ's and tips that I can find through the fog of minor brain damage, fat and old age, in order to help first timers heading towards LL's and remind some of the regulars of a few things.

So, here goes....by the way, feel free to add any tips you have or I forget

My big number one is the physical preparation and acclimation of your body for what can sometimes be punishing heat.

Start pounding water NOW, start drinking lots and lots of water. It takes time for your body to absorb and store water in it's muscle and tissue, so you need to start storing water internally NOW. Drink a few quarts a day. Cut back on caffeine, as it dehydrates you. Keep drinking water, LOTS OF WATER, up to and once you get to LL's. Bottom line is, if you get thirsty, it's too late and you're screwed. NEVER ALLOW YOUR BODY TO GET TO THE POINT OF BEING THIRSTY. It will take too long to recover and get your body to absorb the fluids. You cannot go from dehydrated to hydrated in a matter of hours.

Acclimate your body to the heat. Go sit in a sauna or better yet, move a stationary bicycle into a sauna to work out. Drive in your car with the A/C off or even with the heater on. Stop being a pussy and hiding in the A/C all the time. Get used to the heat. Get your body used to the heat.

When training, you're probably only riding 20-25 minutes, and that's wrong. You need to ride more, ride longer and ride harder. Training and practicing doesn't make up for the pace you'll be going at LL's, so you need to train twice as long to make up for the difference in pace.

When at the Ranch:

You will need some form of pit vehicle, the place is huge. Golf cart rentals are available, you need to reserve them. I believe that can be done through the MX Sports website. Pit bikes are allowed, with a helmet. However, all vehicles other than say bicycles require a licensed driver 16 and older, AND THEY DO ENFORCE IT (sometimes). You'll need lights on your vehicle if you're driving it at night. (flashlights work)

Walk the track every day. They may not change the layout daily, the track still changes itself. Keep in mind, this track is not raced year round, so the soil shifts and changes on it's own as it adapts to the punishment the racing puts on it. You should also look at it closely from the sidelines throughout the day to see how it's changing.

Watch your head on the overhead coverings in the start gate and mechanic's area. Teggers has knocked himself silly a few times right before a moto in the gate.

Registration is on sunday. One thing I have never understood is why people wait in line for registration. You're number is locked in, your spot is guaranteed and MX Sports has enough bibs and bags for everyone, why sweat and wait in the hot sun to get the same thing you're going to get after the line dies down? I don't get it. Up to you, but keep in mind, whether you wait in line or after the line dies down, you're going to get the same thing.

AND DON'T BLOCK UP THE ROAD WITH YOUR CARTS, the road is not a parking lot during registration.

If you luck out and get an electrical hook up camping spot, good for you. If you didn't, which will be most of you, it's pretty much first come first served. Arrive early if you want a good spot or a favored spot. Think about whether you're parked on high ground or not, as it usually rains at least one day, and do you want to be parked and camping in the run off areas?

There are hotels near the track, but they charge too much for what they are and there is a serious lack of food. Speaking of which, trust the voice of experience, DO NOT EAT AT LORETTA'S KITCHEN near the hotels and I-40. Log Cabin Restaurant is the best in that area. There are a few restaurants in the town of Waverly itself.

I stay in Dickson, about 30 mins east of the track exit, it's about 40 min drive total. The hotel rooms are less, there's a lot more access to food, like Cracker Barrel, O'Charley's, a country buffet, and McD's and an Applebee's and more as you head in towards town (north from exit). The Mexican place across from the Wal-Mart is really good.

By the way, there is a Wal-Mart near the track in Waverly. Waverly is to the North of the track. As you exit the Ranch, turn left and you'll drive right into it. It's a few miles. It's a storybook small town. So small, the theatre is a single screen theatre.

At the ranch, there is a small convenience store up on Stagecoach Hill (hill to your left as you enter the Ranch) and one across the street from the entrance. You can get ice and stuff like that at these locations.

There are several bath houses with showers throughout the ranch. DO NOT WASH YOUR GEAR IN THE SHOWERS. Expect the water to be a little cold.

Store your fuel inside to avoid tampering (it does happen). Store your fuel out of the sun and keep it as cool as possible at all times. It is not even a bad idea to ice your fuel for a couple hours before your moto and put in the bike at the last minute, and keep your tank covered. Cooler fuel is horsepower. It is also my opinion that it's silly to ride your bike down to the start area. Why are you going to putt down to the starting area, putting heat into the engine and then just letting heat soak set in, costing you horsepower. Get a tow to the start area if possible.

Speaking of heating up the bike and wasting power, when you take your sighting lap, do so at a reasonable pace. DO NOT STOP AND LOOK AROUND. When you do this, no air is circulating across the radiators, so you're letting the engine build up heat. Keep moving. You must keep air flowing across the radiator. When you get back to the gate, either shut down the engine until just about everyone has returned or have your mechanic fan your radiators manually or a nice small strong battery powered fan would be awesome. Heat robs power, and a holeshot is key. You want maximum HP when that gate drops, and a hot or percolating engine cooling system is not going to giving you maximum HP.

There is entertainment each evening, so relax and enjoy.

Cell phones are pretty useless. Only place they seem to work is up near Stagecoach Hill and/or by where the golf cart rental is. AT&T seems to work best of all the providers.

Before your moto, while waiting in the staging area, have a cool wet towel, like hand towel size, around your neck to keep you cool. Matter of fact, have a separate small cooler set aside solely to keep small towels on ice, for both before and after motos. You need to keep cool before, and cool down after. An iced towel on your head after the moto will cool you quickly. Have your mechanic keep a towel in a gallon sized ziploc for after the moto if you think you're a top 10 guy, as they'll hold you after finishing for a few minutes (or more) and you want to cool off asap.

That's all I can remember for the moment, I know I will add to it, as will others.

One real important thing I want to close with, remember, this is for fun. Don't put too much pressure on yourself or your kid. It is a racing vacation. Strike a balance between yourself and your rider of having fun and being there to do a job. There is no reason to keep your rider stressed 24/7, there is no benefit in it. Let your rider enjoy themselves, but then get them into game face and start warming up their bodies a few hours before their race, or whatever works for you.

Oh, and the annual Engine Ice KFC Chickenfest, that you've heard so much about, will be on Friday again this year and will be during the scheduled lunch break in the race program (about noon). Everyone is welcome to join us, have some eats, meet some new friends and a few of the morons from this moronic place, including myself, the King Moron, Flarider
Now dave.....be nice!! Im bringing my daughter to wear your shirts! (gotta admit I laughed all day at that one)

Hook-up Lottery Drawing on July 20th.
There are a total of 199 available hook-ups on Loretta Lynn Ranch. Due to the amount of racers who attend the National a random computer generated "lottery" is instituted to decide who will receive a hook-up. To be considered for a hook-up, a rider must indicate on their National entry that they would like to enter the "lottery." Alternates not added to the final roster by the posting date are not eligible for the hook-up. Spots will be drawn on Tuesday, July 20th and the recipients will be notified.

With all the cash this event has pulled in over the years you think they would have 1000 hookups by now.

Oh by the way, watch out for stray dogs on the way they are bad luck.

See the pool in the lower right corner?
Our hospitality area is right in front of that pool, just a little more to the right of it, barely out of the frame of that photo

Someone get a hold of Hillbilly and have him drop off some of his home-made "octane booster" for those that want a kicker to chase the Chicken with.... Or just add it to your bikes fuel or car, truck etc., etc.

Race Procedures
2010 NATIONAL RACE PROCEDURES

INDEX

A. Registration Procedure

B. Alternate Procedure

C. Staging/Starting Area Procedure

D. Race Procedure

E. Mechanics Area Procedure

F. Infield Procedure

G. Burnout Procedure

A. REGISTRATION PROCEDURE:

1. Registration at Amsoil Arena

Sunday: 1p - 3p Youth Classes ONLY
Sunday: 4p - 6p Amateur Classes ONLY
Monday: 7a - 10a All Classes

2. All riders, their mechanic and one (1) parent (if the rider is under 18 years of age) must attend registration. Youth riders must attend registration with a parent.

3. The first station is the AMA Station, where every rider must produce a valid and current AMA card for inspection by the AMA official. Expired AMA cards can be renewed at this station.

4. The parent of a youth rider and the youth rider must complete a Youth Release in full. Youth Releases are available at the AMA Station.

5. Upon confirmation of a valid AMA card and completion of a Youth Release (if applicable), the rider, mechanic and parent (if applicable) must proceed to the Class Station designated for each class. Each class will have its own Registration Technician. Riders must register at the Class Station for each class they are entered in.

6. Riders must provide the last four-digits of their frame number at registration. This applies for all classes.

7. The Registration Technician will confirm entry into the class and will require the rider and parent to sign a Rider Release form and the pre-printed Rider Entry form. Please confirm that all information on the Rider Entry form is correct, including bike brand and address.

8. The Mechanic will be required to sign the Release Form and will be given a Mechanics Pass with a number that corresponds with the Race/Moto number for the rider's class. Please check the Mechanics Pass number to ensure it is for the proper race. Mechanics must be at least 18 years of age.

9. The Rider will be given a practice sticker for each class the rider is registered in for Monday's practice session. Each class will practice as a group only once. The sticker must be placed on the front number plate of the bike, and will be checked at the staging area. Only bikes with proper practice stickers will be permitted to practice.

10. Generally, each practice group will consist of two classes. If a rider is in 2 classes and the practice sessions for those classes are run together, or the rider is in back-to-back practice sessions, he may request to practice with a different group for his second practice, so that he gets two full practice sessions.

11. The rider must then proceed to the Race Bib Station and obtain his/her bib and rider packet. The Race Bib must be worn during all motos and all bib graphics must be clearly visible. If a rider loses or destroys a bib, replacements may be purchased from Moto Tees. Each rider will receive one bib and one packet, even if entered in two classes. Extra bibs can be purchased after registration at the Moto-Tee's display.

12. Finally, the rider must go to the Transponder Station and obtain a transponder and instruction on proper placement and mounting. All riders must purchase/rent a Trackside Transponder or have their own. The purchase price at the event is $150; the rental fee is $40 with a $110 refundable deposit. Riders that currently own a transponder must register their transponder at the Transponder Station. Trackside Transponders have a 3-year guarantee and will be used at the 2010 Regionals and National event. Log onto www.mxtransponder.com prior to the event.

13. Live timing and scoring of all races will be provided on the official MX Sports website at www.mxsports.com. Copies of lap times and results will be provided to competitors at no charge, compliments of our great sponsor, Amsoil. Racers can obtain their complimentary lap times from the Trackside Scoring Office.

B. ALTERNATE PROCEDURE:

1. Alternates not entered in another class must report to the MX Sports Front Gate Office upon arrival at the Ranch to obtain a facility permit.

2. All Alternates must attend rider registration and register in each class in which they are an Alternate by completing an entry form. Only riders listed on the Alternate Rider List may register.

3. Alternates will receive their rider packet at registration. Alternates will receive their number assignment, racing bib, Mechanics Pass and transponder only after they are placed in the program.

4. Only the top 5 registered Alternates will practice with their class. If an Alternate is outside of the top 5 ranked Alternates, he should return at the end of registration to see if he has moved up into the top 5 ranking as a result of no-show Alternates. If so, the Alternate will be issued a practice sticker. Otherwise, Alternates cannot practice.

5. Alternates will be placed based upon a power-ranking calculated by the number of riders at the regional level, i.e., Alternates from regionals with the most riders will be given priority placement (See, Supplemental Rules). In other words, a withdrawn rider will not necessarily be replaced by an Alternate from the same regional as the withdrawn rider.

6. Alternates will not be placed until AFTER the close of registration on Monday. An Alternate List will be posted on the Posting Board adjacent to the MX Sports Race Track Office. As Alternates are placed, their names will be added to the list. Alternates should monitor this posted list and report to the MX Sports Race Track Office immediately upon placement on the list, to receive their number assignment, racing bib, Mechanics Pass and transponder.

7. Once a class is full, no further Alternates can be placed unless a seeded rider withdraws from the program prior to the start of the first moto of that class. This means that even if a gate slot is empty on the starting line of the first moto, we still cannot place an Alternate in that position. Once a rider earns a gate position, it is his gate, and it cannot be given to an Alternate without the rider's consent, even if the rider fails to race the first moto. A rider may in fact miss the first moto but race the 2nd and 3rd motos. However, after the first moto of a class is run, no Alternates can be placed in that class. We strongly urge seeded riders to withdraw if there are not able to race any of their motos in a class. Riders that can be replaced with an Alternate will receive a refund of their race entry fee.

8. Riders not selected as an Alternate will be refunded their race entry fee. Camping fees will not be refunded if you attended the event. Refunds will be processed after the event and mailed by September 15th. No refunds will be issued at the event.

C. STAGING/STARTING AREA PROCEDURE:

1. The Staging Area is located behind the Kawasaki Pits. This is a "No Smoking" area. Please dispose of trash properly, using the garbage cans provided.

2. Please keep the center aisle open and clear. No bicycles, golf carts or pit bikes permitted in the staging lanes.

3. Staging spots will be numbered 1 through 42, so that you can go directly to your spot

when it's time for your class to stage. Please be prepared to stage 2 motos before your race.

4. Riders must wear proper race attire, including but not limited to: long sleeve jersey, bib and transponder. Bib graphics may not be covered. Riders must have their transponders properly mounted.

5. Number plates must be clean and clearly visible. A+ stickers are permitted on all plates.

6. First moto gate picks will be determined by drawing spoons. Only riders may draw spoons. Riders may not trade or switch spoons. Riders must have their bikes with them in order to draw a spoon.

7. Second and third moto gate selections will be determined by the previous moto finish, not the overall standings.

8. Riders should accompany their bikes to the gate. Once a rider pulls into a gate slot, the rider will not be permitted to move to another gate.

9. Bikes must be positioned straight and in the center of the gate. The back tire cannot be on top of the white backstop.

10. Only the rider's designated mechanic may accompany the rider to the gate. Mechanics must have their Mechanic's Pass clearly visible. No other persons are permitted on the starting line. Sponsors may only visit with riders in staging, but not on the starting line.

11. No one is permitted in front of the starting gate.

12. The area between the starting gate and the white backstop may be groomed with hands and feet only - tools may not be used. Mechanics may not use golf shoes or cleats in this area. No dirt, water or other material may be added to the area between the starting gate and the white backstop.

13. Starting blocks are permitted, and will be supplied by MX Sports. Riders may not use their own blocks. Blocks may not be used to groom the area behind the gate. The Mechanic is responsible for removing a starting block used by their rider.

14. Number plate colors are as follows:

Class Background Numbers

"A" white black

"B" yellow black

"C" black white

All others white black

15. All classes will be given a "Sighting Lap" prior to the start of each moto. The purpose of this lap is for the rider to inspect the course - not to practice or race. Riders may not leave the gate on the Sighting Lap until the official has completely passed them indicating that it is clear to proceed. Riders may not stop on the track or re-ride a section during the Sighting Lap. The Sighting Lap is optional. Upon completion of the lap, riders must return to their previously chosen gate and clean their number plates if necessary. Tools may be used to scrape mud from bikes.

16. The Start Procedure is as follows:

● 2 Card will be held for 10 seconds

● 1 Card will be held for 10 seconds

● 1 Card will be turned sideways

● Gate will drop between 2 and 5 seconds

17. A rider may request a 2-minute grace period for minor repairs at any time prior to or during display of the 2 Card by holding up his hand. Once the 1 Card is displayed, no additional time will be given. Only one grace period will be given per moto. Grace periods will not be given to clean equipment.

18. Mechanics must step behind the backstop at the 1 Card.

19. Riders will be penalized one lap for taking out the starting gate.

D. RACE PROCEDURE:

1. Transponder scoring will be the official scoring method, with hand scoring back-up. However, lap times are not official results. Official results will be posted on the Results Posting Board.

2. If a rider is injured in practice or is unable to race for any reason, please notify MX Sports of your withdrawal so that an Alternate can be placed. A withdrawn rider will receive a $75 rider entry refund if we are able to replace the rider with an Alternate. This only applies prior to the first moto. Alternates cannot be placed after the first moto.

3. All 51cc classes, the Girls (11-15) class, and "C" classes will run 15-minute motos. All other classes will run 20-minute motos.

4. If a rider is forced off the track or leaves the course for any reason, he must re-enter the track at the safest point without gaining an advantage. A rider is not required to re-enter where he left the track.

5. Riders will be given a Green Flag at the completion of lap one to designate that the race is on. If a Red Flag is given, riders must return to their original gate position to await further instruction.

6. The half-way point in each moto will be signaled at the Finish Line by Crossed White and Green Flags.

7. The Caution (Yellow) Flag designates a downed rider or other situation to raise caution. A rider may pass and jump on the caution flag. The Red Cross Flag designates an injured rider and/or medics on the track. Riders must hold their position and cannot jump or pass on the red cross flag. This includes the area of the track known as the Ten Commandments. (Please note: This rule differs from the AMA Amateur Rule Book and applies only to the AMA Amateur Nationals at Loretta Lynn's.)

8. A rider must complete at least one-half the laps of the leader and take the checkered flag in order to be scored. Otherwise, the rider will be considered a DNF. A "DNF" (did not finish) results in moto points equal to the total number of riders in the class. A rider that fails to report to staging will be considered a DNS. A "DNS" (did not stage) results in moto points equal to the total number of riders in the class, plus 30 points.

9. The top 10 finishers in all classes must stop for impounding immediately after the finish of each moto. Frame numbers will be checked. Bikes will be held at impound until released by the Referee.

10. The top 3 finishers in each moto should proceed directly to the podium for interviews and the award of Moto Medals.

11. The top 3 overall class finishers should proceed to the podium upon completion of the final moto.

12. Class awards will be given to the top 10 riders in each class Saturday evening at the Amsoil Arena. Riders should wear their Moto Medals to the Awards Ceremony.

13. Rented transponders must be returned to the Trackside Scoring Office after the rider's final moto.

E. MECHANICS AREA PROCEDURE:

1. The Mechanics Area is located to the right of the starting line behind the starting line billboard. Only properly credentialed Mechanics may enter the Mechanics Area.

2. After the start, Mechanics must proceed directly to the Mechanics Area. Only Mechanics with proper credentials will be permitted in the Mechanics Area.

3. A rider may register more than one Mechanic, but only one Mechanic Pass will be issued, and only one Mechanic per rider will be permitted in the area per moto. All Mechanics must register with the rider at Rider Registration.

4. Mechanics Passes may not be switched or transferred from one person to another, unless that person is a properly registered Mechanic for that rider.

5. Riders are responsible for the conduct of their Mechanics and may be subject to penalty for inappropriate conduct by their Mechanic.

6. Mechanics must stay behind the Mechanics Area fence and may not enter or cross the track.

7. Riders requiring mechanical assistance must pull into the Mechanics Area entrance in order to receive assistance. Riders must then re-enter the track at the opposite end of the Mechanics Area. Riders will be responsible for safe re-entry onto the track. Riders interfering with other riders upon re-entry are subject to penalty.

F. INFIELD PROCEDURE:

1. The track infield is restricted. Only authorized track personnel, and credentialed press and sponsors may access the infield.

2. Riders and their Mechanics may inspect the track prior to Monday's practice and in the evenings after the track maintenance crew has completed track preparations. No one is permitted on the track while the track maintenance crew is working.

3. Press must obtain infield credentials from the MX Sports Race Track Office prior to entering the infield. Only industry-related press and press with proper identification will be permitted access.

4. Event sponsors may obtain infield credentials from the MX Sports race track office. Business identification will be required.

5. Infield passes will be issued Monday at 3 pm. However, infield passes are not valid until racing begins on Tuesday, as the infield is closed during practice.

6. Signaling riders, cheering or providing mechanical assistance is prohibited by press or event sponsors on the infield. Crossing the track is forbidden.

7. Only MX Sports staff may assist fallen or stranded riders. For the 50cc PW Class, event sponsors and OEM personnel may also assist fallen or stranded riders.

G. BURNOUT PROCEDURE:

1. The burnout area is located in Area 3 near the gate entrance.

2. Only registered racers and their race bikes are permitted to use the burnout area. No pit bikes, golf carts or other vehicles are permitted.

3. Proper protective equipment must be worn at all times in the burnout area.

4. Riders are responsible for their own safety in the Burnout Area.

5. The burnout area is open:

Monday from 8:30 am - 7 pm

Race days from 7am - 7 pm

Rubber baseballs were a disaster last year. Some folks (kids) got a little "overzealous" in throwing them.

We have some give a ways during the week, a few surprises and we're going to get some games to goof off with like beanbag toss and stuff like that, you know, picnic games.

Other than that, be our usual animated selves

Stop by the Engine Ice Hospitality Area at the AMA Loretta Lynn's Amateur National Motocross Championship and pick up your Engine Ice ear splitting whistle to cheer your favorite riders on as they go by....believe me, they'll hear it over those loud four-strokes
