How will this effect the futures class? Will they also have to be a minimum of 18 years old?

No, the pro classes and amateur futures use different insurances, that's root cause of the change. Look for futures to expand.

The Futures class will get a lot more attention, I can see it becoming a third race every week.

You mean “Next”. So stupid that they’re changing the name. Said because they’re the “next” thing….which is the same damn thing as “future”

Friendly reminder that this is what adam cianciarulo looked like at 16 years old in 2013 racing against full grown ass men in the 250 class when he turned pro. No shit when he crashed he got hurt…

image 247.jpeg?VersionId=NW9rIHrijl30afAbokmV9

Here he is 2 years later in 2015. Still not the dude we know today and still looks very young but def doesnt look like an 8 yr old anymore

I think this rule is a good change. On the title 24 podcast RV said he went from superminis at lorettas to big bikes for 8 months before he went pro. RC said it was the same for him too. Thats not enough time. How many of these amateur phenoms go pro and get hurt and never pan out? A lot. 2-3 years of riding big bikes instead of a couple months will have these kids much more dialed and ready to go. Plus theyre going to be going to canada to race or europe for emx plus supercross futures. We should be getting a better product when these kids finally enter the pro class. I think its a good change. In most pro sports the kids have to be 18 and most do a few years in college so enter the draft around 20. In the nba players have to be 19 now in order to be elegible for the draft. I’m glad to see this change in mx/sx, a 16 yr old kid racing vs a jordon smith or rj hampshire just has no shot unless theyre a generational talent. I want to see guys ready to go and stay around a while.

With the way the pro age is rising each year until 18, I don’t think this will mess up anyone’s plans that much unless there’s currently a 15 year old in amateur mx that planned to turn pro next year. I don’t know if I’ve heard of any…

You might be too young to remember this but up until the early 2000s - 125s were half the SX night show and could damn near do every obstacle- hell they even had real whoops and dragons backs - back then…

We’re talking about the futures class. They wouldn’t be factory modded 125s

This may seem the solution for most people but it's not right to hold people like Stew and Jett back.  Stew was annihilating everyone in the 125 class at 16-years-old and Jett was clearly ready for the pros at the same age.  What are they going to do if they can't race in the pros?  Race futures and beat everyone by a million seconds per lap?

I agree with the old adage: If they're good enough they're old enough.

I'll add that I don't think comparing moto with sports like football is an appropriate comparison. While being physically mature in moto helps it's not as crucial as having the strength and size to take the hits in sports like rugby union.

All that will happen if they raise the pro age to 18 is all the young amateurs will go to Europe and race.

They told Honda that if they don't let Jett go pro when he did that they where going back to Europe as the amateur racing in America was causing him to go backwards.

Maybe I’m the odd man out here but that seems awesome to me! And if the American teams have an issue with that, that just means our domestic series will finally get better.

Guaranteed that's what will happen, there was talk of raising the age to 18 just before AC went pro and his dad said if you raise the age we are going to Europe, so the didn't.

He was beating the kids he was racing by a minute.

Somebody remind me again the difference between factory 250 futures kids and the reg 250 night show - oh yeah pretty much nothing.  They can all do the jumps and to the avg fan look exactly the same out there. Whats the point.  85s to 250s is a head scratcher.

Yamaha Futures Program ( KTM JRs seems to work) - YZ125s catch the fever..

I love the futures races. Hell, I even watch amateur races when you can see them live. Watching the up and comers over the years and watching their progression is really cool. I guess it's not for everybody though. Just go fix you a snack while they are on.

Some might but the elite top guys will probably stay solely because of supercross prep.

Agreed. The frequency of having kids go to AMA pro racing @ 16 has become less and less. Cochran and Beaumer were both 17 last year I think. A large amount of AMs in the A class are 17-18 already. If the retirement ages continue to be in the early 30s for the top guys I foresee a continued bottleneck causing an increasing average age in the 250 class as we have been seeing.
