Now if you're referring to keeping his program as far as training and such consistent no, because they do have another job.

It makes for long days and even longer nights driving to the races.

Yeah I was just wanting to clarify that there are privateers(my idea of a privateer) at each race that could certainly benefit from that payout.
I know and it pisses me off to no end they consider these guys privateer.

How do you figure? These guys on here are acting like the semi was given to them recently. They were pretty sucessfull with there xtreme team green/canidae team. Have you looked at the requirements it takes to be facotry? Ya they are pushing the line a bit but technically they are privateer.

Nielsen.. Tommy Hahn gets factory support and so does Ivan Tadesco...

The funny thing is, I was going to do the privateer profile with Ryan Sipes a while back but was told that he is a factory support rider so don't bother. Then last week Travis Baker got a privateer profile done and he's on the same team.

I've worked with many privateers throughout the years and Tommy Hahn certainly isn't a privateer. Looking at the results from SX, the money should have went to Justin Keeney. Even Jason Thomas should not be considered privateer in SX. He flies to the races, pits out of a semi, has a salary, gets free parts and bikes. That right there should disqualify you from the privateer bonus.

Yeah Chris I agree. And I also think from your work with privateers you would know. Just like you I think JT is the first one I would consider but even JT is a stretch in my opinion. From what I understand JT gets paid and bikes from BTO and suzuki and they fly him to all the races, pay for his mechanics and take care of other expenses..

The first true true privateer and very deserving of the 25k the way he road this year is Justin Keeney.

With the Warthog semi truck it makes real privateers have a semi but no one on the team gets a salary, bikes, or many parts for free. They also pay for their own flights and hotels. They do get a mechanic that is a MMI intern for the day but the mechanic also doesn't get paid. So that is the main exception to the whole pitting in a semi theory.

Now a days being a "factory" rider isn't as special as it used to be. With the right amount of money you can build a privateer bike from Pro Circuit that will be competitive. Look at Regal last weekend!

The fact is that all those teams mentioned provide this for the riders.

1. Salary with bonuses.
2. Mechanic who gets a salary.
3. Flights, rental cars, and hotels.
4. Semi to pit out of.
5. Free bikes and parts.
6. Access to test tracks.

If a rider can check off 4 out of 6 of those he should be considered a privateer IMO.

Your mechanic must have all expense paid flights and hotels to be eligible for privateer stuff. Get with the programErmm .

A trip to the gncc's would humble most of these divas out real quick.

If guys on the Rockstar team are considered privateers the AMA needs to look at changing the rules next year. That's just MHO.

It could also be a way for teams to cut cost. They tell rider X that they will sign him for a little less money, but he has the opportunity to make it up in privateer money. It's almost a performance based contract.

So 250 and 450 1st place receive the same payout?

Man wtf IS a privateer now a days? I know none of those guys out there bought their own bikes. Actually I dont know, but where do you draw the line? If you pit out of a van or truck? If you pit in the corner? Robbie Reynard was a true privateer after he was with suzuki. I remember walking through the pits and looking at his set up. It consisted of him, his dad, a box van, and a ez-up.
Its good to see the rockstar team doing well though.

New rules and a new term for the not factory, not privateer teams.

So suzuki doesn't supply the team with in house works parts, but they do cut them a check and give them bikes. Teams with "factory support", or "support from the factory" should no doubt be exempt from the Privateer award.

Tommy Hahn had a great SX season but c'mon a guy like Keeney would take that 25K and put it right back into his racing program I sure. Better equipment, attend more races like the nats, maybe a trainer or full-time mechanic. Whats Hahn going to do with it since all that is paid for by his team? A new car, watch, rims... give me a break AMA you guys blew it.

I say we start up a VitalMX true privateer award fund, and hand it out at the end of the nats.

I'm sure you guys won't like this dose of reality, but...

If you're going to go by the definition above, they might as well figure out some other award to spend the money on.

We're talking about Supercross here, right? The guys who fit that description are few and far between, they may make a few night shows, but in the 450 class I'd be hard pressed to think of anyone who's not just doing that, but doing it with any regularity. Making mains? That's even more rare.

And as far as pitting out of a pickup truck? Riders might do that if they're racing in their local area, like GL did at Glen Helen. And I'm not trying to pick on James DeCotis (who definitely falls into privateer territory), but here's the "box van" that he was pitting out of at GH.

Now all that aside, I know that the Nationals are a different deal, and that's where you're more likely to find true privateers. But there's also no privateer awards like you guys are talking about.

There's a big difference between that and this Tour of Rockstar Energy Drink/Suzuki/Canidae big rig,, Big difference.. If you can watch that video and say privateer in the same sentence while keeping a straight face you're a better liar than I am.
