I am just speculating with no facts,  but is it a possibility that KTM is selling the bike with bare minimum muffler because they have come to realize that most riders replace them with aftermarket parts?

Also the new gen black allloy muffler is much lighter and smaller than what came on the last generation bike, so it could be a weight saving trick?

Flame on….

Could be. Also i don’t know how many regions there are where they are this strict at noise levels. Maybe 9 out of there 10 customers never run into trouble so they won’t complain.
But yeah i don’t have any facts on this either

Rule of thumb, cold exhaust are quieter than hot exhaust. Hope this helps.

Have to disappoint you guys, the track i was supposed to go is closed due to rain showers last night… i’m going somewhere else but they don’t do the measurements over there, so we’ll have to wait. From what i can hear it is more quiet, but i don’t know by how much.

Oh.. I know real secrets. I’ve heard of some unreal stuff in the paddock to pass sound.

UPDATE!

just got a measurement done again with the akrapovic. It’s now hitting 112.2db, so it got down about 2db. Technically its still 0.2db over the limit, but i’m in the error margin now so good to go.

But next year the limits are aparantly going down by 1db again. Maybr i’ll have to look into the ECU and change the ignition or make it run a little richer? Any experts on that stuff over here?

Consider the foam inside the airbox and maybe like 2 filter socks, just to choke it down. Can always take that stuff off once you pass sound not that I’m promoting you cheat lol

Yeah i guess i'll go ahead and try it. I just hate to resort to those kind of solutions you know, i just want my stuff to work without those kind of DIY techniques, especially because i cant work out why it is still so loud with the engine being standard..

This is what i found about FIM noise regulations and the road towards it here in The Netherlands :

“It has been decided that both the KNMV and the MON will reduce the maximum noise level by 1 dB(A) every year for the next three years. They do this in order to arrive at the maximum permitted value of 111 dB(A) for all classes by the 2025 season, just like the FIM. This means a maximum of 113dB in 2023, a maximum of 112dB in 2024 and a maximum of 111dB in 2025.”

So this means i’m over the limit again next year… and i doubt getting the sound down by a 1.0-1.5db with some foam in the airbox? Man i hate spending money on this stuff while it could also have gone to suspension, gas, gear etc….

So something like this i guess? Cut out an old filter  from the previous bike.

I would look at gluing it to the inside of the filter cover also. They make foam insulation tape that might work for that.

Well i asked around a lot but seems like my bike is just really loud for some weird reason. And i hate that i can’t figure that out.. there are guys that are also near/just over the limit but not as bad as mine. When they were just over the limit an aftermarket slip-on fixed it on most cases.

Dang, hopefully the foam in the airbox helps some, maybe your skid plate is contributing to the engine noise? Some foam on the inside of the skid plate may help, I have no idea if it would help enough but it’s worth a shot they sell skid plate foam to keep mud out it may also help with keeping the noise down.

Just some ideas, that’s really a bummer yours is worse than the others around you

I don’t run a skid plate so can’t be from there. Thanks for all the ideas and thinking along. I contacted some ecu tuners and with a vortex/get ecu it’s possible to make a “quiet map” where they just power the rev limiter a bit so you can pass the test. Thats the expensive last resort for me i guess. For now i’ll try the foam. I’ll just keep updating this post for future reference, don’t know if anybody is reading this but it doesn’t hurtWink

Got another update:

Got  a deal (€575) on a barely used“Get ECU” where i had the rev limiter turned down by 2000rpm from standard in neutral. Went to the track today and first it measured 114db again… so i was like what the f… Luckily I was allowed to hit the track to warm everything up, did a measurement again and then it got down to 109,6db. Massive difference between cold and hot engine/exhaust. Had the foam in the airbox as well. I’ll get that out the next time to see where it ends up then, but i guess i’m safe (as long if its warmed up).
