What class to run?

Hey guys, curious if anyone could have some guidance for me. Been struggling on which class to run. Last year was my first year racing. I have rode my whole life (31 years old). But finally focusing on trying to do the moto thing. I've rode tracks before and raced when I was a little kid. But took a hiatus from moto for about 10-12 years. My peers that I ride with told me I need to run the 30+c class because of how sketchy the D(beginner) classes are.  And that I have good enough track etiquette. So last year I raced a few 30+C races and I really felt like the pace was a little above me and I always brought up the tail end of the pack. It honestly felt kind of demoralizing. I have progressed slightly this year and can finally hit "most" jumps and do the basics of the course. But I still don't think I have the speed and pace to run with even top 5 C guys. My friends think I'm crazy for wanting to step back to D class. Whats your opinion?

Stay on the C class and focus on your fundamentals. The beginner class will just stall your progression. Keep practicing and focus on the top 10 as a goal by the end of the year.

My biggest regret in my racing endeavors was staying down in C class to chase trophies instead of chasing the pace of those faster than me, You're progression will be much quicker and noticeable racing against the better skill level. As long as you are not a hazard to other racers, all of your buddies have the right idea on you staying put in your class until your in the front of the pack.

Thanks for the replies fellas. Looks like I'll take all of your advice and stick with the C class.

If you have already raced and have raced in the C class you can not go backwards to the beginner D class.

If you were able to jump right in and run top 5 in the C class, then you should be thinking about going to the B class............

Work your way up to the top 5 in the C class, the cheap plastic trophies from the D class aren't that cool.

When I raced C class years ago , I was a mid pack runner. My race buddy was  250B racer and we practiced together all the time. He talked me into moving up to B. I was mid to rear of the pack on outdoor but i had a few top 3-5's in Arenacross over the winters. The next year i moved back to 125C outdoors and immediately won a few C races and had some top 3's as well. So i ended up going back to B til the end of my racing days in 125/250. I was happier being a mid pack B rider than a c class champ. It is also worth noting that i never won a single D class race the entire time I tried. Had to get the hell out of that class. LOL.

I think you got the general consensus, but it also can’t be stressed enough how sketchy the d class can be with guys cutting over on the face or take off of jumps that they are scared to do.
