Yeah, we run 100+ horses. I like structure and some days it’s chaos.

That’s how I felt about the big paint gelding I rode on the ranch. They sold him, I loaded him in the trailer, went in to my house and cried.

Been there.  When I was a kid I learned to ride on a big paint named Bantu.  He also got sold, and we were too broke to be the buyer.  Adult me hasn’t replaced him, but found another that helps fix me when I am mentally broken. He’s going to be with me until we are both old men.

I'm not a horse person.

I'm wary - well, I'm bloody scared of some of them. Some of my old GFs herd are right ratbags / psychopaths' - she takes in  problem horse for re-hab, quite often

One of my first girlfriends from decades ago, who I'm still great friends with, is All Horse, All The Time. Has her own business with Horse Training and agistment, works for a Sheik's (incredible) Horse Facility only a few miles from her.

In all the time I've known her / her family, I've Never not seen at least one of them damaged by their Horse pastime. Seriously, the injury toll outstrips even what we Motorcyclists endure.

I'll go and visit her, usually get 'persuaded' to have a ride - I am, The Worst, Most Unnatural Horse Rider On Earth. It's something I just can't do with any grace or confidence.

However, my friends biggest  passion is Shire Horse breeding and training. And those, I love, Huge, towering things that all seem to love me. Fug knows why? One especially, that I've known since his birth. I scrubbed him down in the birth stall, with his mum alternately licking him, and me - she wouldn't let others near him for some time.

So, he, Chieftain, grew up with me, despite my only being around perhaps once a week, and, at times, months away.  He now is, apparently, the largest Shire Horse in Australia, perhaps the World. My friend will have nothing to do with the Shire Horse association - or whatever they are called, so he's not listed.

Anyway, I can turn up, and he'll somehow sense I'm around, even from paddocks a few Ks away, and come charging up to me like a delirious puppy. Then, follow me around, once again, like a pup. He, apparently, goes all 'sooky' for quite some time after I've been.

About a year or more back, I took him into his stall, making a non horse persons mistake of being on the closed wall / gate side. Everything was cool, though my friend ripped into me for not being on the open gate side, when Chief started to get stroppy. moving over onto me, and I was trapped between a mountainous horse, and a solid wall, with him leaning into me. I was bloody terrified. He then started stomping and rearing, I thought I was done for, and ended up under him.

Well, a dirty great big brown snake had come into the fresh stall bedding, and that's what Chief was reacting to. Turns out I was lucky I had made the mistake of being on his left, as the bastard snake was on the right of the stall. Chief stomped the hell out of the thing, then was snuffling and pulling at me from under him. He dragged me out of the stall by my jacket.

He got hit by the snake about 6 or 7 times, but it didn't affect him - though, we had the Vet out straight away to make sure he was going to be OK. I got a few broken ribs, and twisted both dodgy knees, but the alternative of multiple hits from a Brown Snake probably would have done for me.

Chief is the most wonderful animal I've ever met, who seems to adore me. Why?, buggered if I know. Most of  the other 'normal sized' horses, don't give a damn about me, well, other than them seeming to go to Chief "why TF do you bother with this old drongo?"

I love him, and, will get out to see him tomorrow, for the first time since my knee replacement. Might even get on his back - he always wants me to for some reason, and let's only his Boss, and I get on him. He's the most gentle , loving giant with me. I can't wait for tomorrow - as I said, I'm Not a Horse person, I'm not remotely comfortable with them, but he's my Buddy, who always knows when I'm a bit damaged.

So, I'm up for a bit of Equine Therapy, tomorrow. Should be wonderful. I think I might stay for a few days with the Big Boofhead and his Boss Lady.

haha

that is just the start

Started dating the owner about 10 years ago when I was stepping away from running races.

I am Mr. Fixit / transporter / feed and waste logistics / fence maintainer / bushhogger / and occasionally, horse planter. and that is enough.

we do a show every month, coming up this Saturday. English and western. You guys think moto has a bunch of classes.

All the other weekends most of the year we have three 6 horse trailers going on the road to shows both Saturday and Sunday.

We have 4 instructors and over 100 active students doing at least once a week.

In June and July we do summer camps. Had 24 kids last week. 18 this week.

It is a lot like being around moto. A lot of energy and too much drama. Keeps the kids focused and out of trouble.

I haven't been on a horse in about 6 years. Really doesn't do anything for me. When I get to start riding my klr650 enough to keep me happy I may look at trying horses again.

VL13, Hope you are doing well and horses continue to help.

always enjoyed your videos on the ranch. Are you getting settled in to start producing some again?

Yes Sir. The lady that owns the place loves that I do video and wants me to promote her business. I’m trying to get everybody on board to turn it in to a vlog.

My silliness…

I got just as much joy after the ride when I’d get “cool-down walk” the horse and brush him down…feed him…and sometimes just let him run around with his dog, “Brodie”, in the big corral.

I need to get a horse again.

I’ve got a 3000 pound Percheron here at my house right now. His name is, “Smoke”. When I walk out in the morning and yell, Smoke, he comes running to me. That is trust and love, no better feeling in the World.

I’ve actually got four Percherons and a Quarter Horse here. They’re mowing my lawn and weed whacking the place.

The morning call when you go out and the horse comes up and seems to be saying…

”Where are we going today?”Laughing

I’ve got to change my cinch, but I’m going to put a saddle on him and ride him soon. The Quarter gelding I normally ride is a big dude at 1400. Smoke makes him look like a mini. Smokes withers are over my head.

The Rancher’s Son graduated college and decided he wanted to run the ranch.

I’m at a place now that does guided horseback tours of the Kit Carson National Forest.

This is my friend, Smoke, the 3000+ pound Percheron.

He’s as gentle as a Giant Dog! When you ask him to lope, you know you’re riding something different. He isn’t fast, but you can feel his muscle. Only reason the lead rope is on him, ‘cause I led him over to my porch so I could get on him.

Only horse I ever liked was a Paint. Never rode  one or, been around them much.  The owner of the property I was living on while getting established with work in Washington had horses. All the other horses fucking tried to bite. The Paint was cool af. Friendly, kinda comical.  I brought him apples every week.

I never liked Paint Horses. When I went to the ranch, they assigned me that Paint. I fell in love with that horse, “Hombre”. He taught me a TON! Had the same relationship with him, I’d yell his name and he’d run to me.

Really wish I’d discovered my Horse Whisperer earlier in life. Horses are one of the few things that make me truly happy and bring me joy.

Yeah, this horse would come when I called his name as well. Cool animals but, I’ll stick with dirt bikes LOL.

It’s similar.  Ranger is gaited and that saddle was custom made by Kevin Parish in Alabama.  It’s a suspended saddle and super comfy.  We compete in endurance rides so I don’t need a horn on this one.

Did about 14 miles on this big Dunn I’ve been working with. Second ride putting miles on him. Different horse today from when I first stepped on him. He’s a good horse, just needed somebody he could trust. Did some Horse Whispering and Rowel Therapy.

Thats Sam, my eight month old Hanging Tree Cow Dog. She walked all the way with us. Walks right next to the horse the majority of the time.
