Dear DC

Based on guilt I need to come clean on one item. I pointed out the oversight of not mentioning Bob Halstead...but I neglected to mention that I am his current sponsor. Bob was as fast as anyone on the list. He had the style of Marty Tripes (and the current profile +/- a couple of pounds). In addition, I also sponsored the late Dave Ostrem. Dave raced with Mr. Slife and will be missed by his friends. I paid for a memorial that was dedicated at last weeks New Hartford race. Dave married his long time companion Justin in December and he survives. The Hunt brothers also raced with the Halstead brothers. Dana Hunt has been acknowledged for his community efforts in promoting the "stay within the family" philosophy.
Yes, there is more then corn in Iowa...

Its been awhile Jesse but ya I used to come up there for sure. I think the last time I was up there was around 94 for an Area Qualifier when I was riding B. Always raced against Karter Busse if I remember right and then I have rode A since 95. I raced alot of Nuclear Series races back when the Nuclear Series was the place to be to race against the best in the Midwest you know. Did that from when I was on 80's in 92 till roughly 98 and then off and on till about 2002 and then I used to frequently hit the Vet Nationals. I also used to hit up Gerhards races at the Mendota once and awhile and used to hit up Coal Valley alot.That is where I used to race against quite a few guys from Wisconsin. But ya I do remember you Jesse. I didn't talk much back then I was actually a really shy kid that only wanted to race my scooter.

If I ever get my lazy ass back on the bike I'd like to hit up Mendota, and Petkonica(sp?) this summer.

Never been to those tracks, and I prefer the night racing now.

Did you have RM's back then?

Karter owns the old Torque Center... called Ride now. I still talk to him quite often.

There was a kid from IL that I can't remember his name.

I just remember that on the way to LL's or a qualifier... got into a car accident or something... took a year off...Casey I think was his name.

He was a good guy, he used to travel and race around here too.

Ya I rode Suzuki's from 90 to 94 and then got a Team Green Ride in 95 and could never get anything going on them. We just didn't bond. Then I went back to Suzuki's in 96-99 and then to Yamaha's up till 2005 and switched to Honda's till 2008. Now I'm back on Yamaha's. Back when we raced together I was number 6 if I recall right. If I was closer to Mendota I would go more. Gerhard pays out way good, but usually when he races Cedar Rapids races here. Ya I know what your talking about with that Casey kid but I can't think of his last name either.

Here is some more names Mitch moyer, Shane cox, Randy tysor, Rich Hardesty, not to mention Chet Bumgardner who my biased opinion( hes my nephew )would have made the top five had he not been injured, hard to argue against his results at lorettas and the mini O's.

Willis VanZee, for sure. Very smooth and fast.
I sponsored him around 81-83. Same time as Bill Foy and Bob Halstead, both who are on the list.
Several others, too, who didn't make the list. It was a fun and rather large team, made up of all sizes from 80cc to 500cc.

OT: Cloverdale...you are gonna be in trouble! haha

Proud to have Todd Walton on the list. I often wobble into him during a 30A start!

Good for RacerX to do this.

Just a few guys that I was thinking about lately. Steve Tomfelt used to race the Nationals back in the late 70s and early 80s and was fast as hell! I remember Shaun Huggins used to be flat out fast on minis always battling with Chad Pederson. And its really hard to not have Jamie Bennett on that list. He used to make all the Arenacrosses and some Supercross and Nationals as well. Not only that but, if you were gonna race the A classes at Hawkeye Downs, be prepared to have your ass handed to ya! He flat out hauled at that place! watched him beat Pederson and Denny Stephenson there many of times! Also, just as everyone has noticed, its hard to not have the Halstead brothers on that list. They were both so blazing fast! Tracy Bachman was always a guy that was very fast and always racing the Supercrosses too. Very cool to see these names on the list though! I remember Rick Munson was one of the first local riders that I looked up to! His gear was always bad ass and his bikes were always so trick! Also, Jimmy White was a very fast 3-wheeler racer from des-moines that won several championships! I used to race against Craig Noack and he was very fast! Might have made it in this sport if he had the money. And I remember watching a little Teddy Maier jumping that tabletop at Brighton as well. Oh, and Jonny Spaw was amazing to watch ride! He deserves to be on that list as well!

Trea: was it Jimmy White I think #43 on a 200x right? It's been so long, but I remember I liked Mike Coe #23 and I think it was Jimmy #43... Anyways, Yeah Hawkeye downs all the way through the ranks had fast guys. I remember moving up and every time, the front guys were just faster than all the other tracks. C class I was winning else where but would go there and they would put a hurtin on. It took me some time to win each class. Then B class got worse. A class I went elsewhere. There was just no competing with Pederson, Jackson, Bachman, Munson etc. They all showed up there and it was like a different level of A classers. It was sure fun watching those guys though. I loved that track and dirt. Then they took that long straight away out and I kinda didn't like it as much, It was like a highway, super fun and fast. Although I haven't seen it for 10 years or more. Don't know how it looks now. Trea, you and your bro weren't slouches either. First around our area to freestyle I remember. Down at Rusty's track.

Trea don't even act like you shouldn't be on there 2. If I remember right did you not hand JR JACLSON his butt a couple times at Coal Valley? Also if there were two brothers that looked better then ANYONE at the track it was you and Eric. Badass looking custom painted helmets, super badass looking bikes. I was always in AWWW at how good you and your brothers stuff was. If there is another 2 stroke race this year also I'll take you up on your offer from last year. =)

Also this kid should be on the list if Gavin is on there. Jeremy handed Gavin his butt 90% of the time when they raced this year no matter where it was.

X2!!!! Richie kicked everyones ass it didn't matter who it was. Bobby was faster then Richie and if he could stay on 2 he could hand Richie his butt. I idolized Richie growing up like no other he was rediculously fast and as smooth as JMB. Thats not made up thats a fact. Honestly they should both be on this list. Im a Justin Brayton fan and if they were in the same ERA Richie would of handed him his butt to. I have more RESPECT for the BIG number 340 on a Dirtbike then anyone else but Rick Munson.......

Chad, yea, Jimmy was #3 I belive and #43 was Curtis Sparks.
Freestyle? We were just doing things that we were seeing on t.v. at the time. Rustys track huh? Those were the gool ol days for sure!
I was never a big fan of Hawkeye Downs myself, but you just had to go there to be competitive ya know. It was just one of those fast supercross tracks and I always sucked at the fast tracks. Coal Valley and Brighton were my kinda tracks!

Todd, Thanks for the awesome comments! I did have some great rides here and there but truely belive that I was way too inconsistant at local races and just didnt do anything at the pro level to be on that list. I always took great pride though that racing was more to me than just riding the bike and having fun. I took it as a job and totally dedicated my life to it. Its was really cool to see the names on that list though! Brought back so many cool memories of racing with these guys in the early 80s and all the way until I quit in the mid 90s. I just cant wait to see the list for Illinois too! There were so many fast dudes that I raced against from that state as well!

Yes there is! Kress couldn't carry Gavin's helmet. I don't know what results you are looking at but Gavin has been running up front at National events, as has Devin Reed.

Yeah, I checked all the am national results from this year (aside from whitney, couldn't find those) and I didn't even see Kress on the list! But I did see Gavin in the top 10 in almost EVERY class, EVERY race.
But then again, the Fort Dodge guys have always shined on a NATIONAL stage Smile

Wow! This is Rich Halstead and have just got on this website and I am glad to see so many people getting involved. Shows well for Iowa racing! I had to jump on because I now live in TX just outside of Austin and Mike Theisen, who was also a great rider in Iowa in the mid-80s has told me about Jeremy Kress and he does indeed ride for Honda of Houston. Mike said Kress has a lot of talent and we as Iowa riders should be pulling for him. I pull every week for Justin Brayton for that reason and because of his success there is no doubt that he is the #1 rider in Iowa. If you want to look at who the top riders are look at who they have riden for. The sponsers out there are putting their funds into the riders they believe in and they are the experts. I rode in Iowa from 1974 to 1997 and I have seen a lot of great riders. I will tell you that Burman, White, Alan and Denny Bumgartner dominated the WEST in the 125/250 classes while Donny and Rick Munson, Bill Foy, along with Monty Murry dominated the East but there was only one mini rider we all focused on beating at that time and it was Johnny Spaw. My parents had Bob and I ride in the East because that was where Johnny rode and that was who they felt would make help us reach the next level. When Johnny started riding 125s in the late 70s he dominated that class and believe me, he worked harder to win the 80 class than the 125 in 79. When I rode minis in 1980 I focused on three riders in the 125 that I wanted to compete agianst in 1981, Johnny, Mitch Moyer, and my Brother Bob. I turned down a Yamaha assist ride for the 100A class in 81 and rode the 125 class instead. We had many races with 50+ riders in the 125A and ran qualifiers to make the main. Racing in Iowa was great at that time. I had many riders that were competitors thru the years, Brian Hunt, Dana Hunt, and Mike Theisen were all great riders. Chad Pederson deserves to be in the top 5 for his results as a pro and I respected him as a great rider. I rode against Craig Noak and he was also a very good rider. Chet Bumgartner was also an upcoming rider and nothing hurt me more and caused me to rethink things than his injury. It was a very painful time for him and his family. Bench Racing is fun but let's remember, THAT'S ALL IT IS!
