I know that So. Cal, Florida, Texas, and even Ohio/Indiana/Michigan area get a lot of responses on here, but we had a hell of a group in the Pacific Northwest (Oregon, Washington, Idaho).

Larry Ward, Lowell Thompson, Rick Simmett, Butch (Snowman) Smith (all won amatuer nationals), Ryan Huffman, Lowell's cousin Brian Thompson, Chaun McAllister, Paul Winn, Jeff Dailey, Jon Calhoun, Jamie Munson, Jason McCormick (younger at the time, but kept up) and others were the class on the mini's (85cc) in the early 80's.

The big races would have all of these guys on the line. Plus some others like myself. We had 15-20 strong expert mini riders and when we all got together for a big race in the Pac Northwest it was something.

The Thompson's, Snowman, Simmett and McAllsiter were all from Idaho, but very close to the Washington/Oregon border.

Huffman, McCormick, Calhoun, Winn, and Dailey were all from Oregon.

Ward, Munson, and others like myself were from Washington.

There was also a Suzuki rider that was the only guy (like Mike Healey was) racing Suzuki RM 80's in this period from 1983-1985. But I can't remember his name. He was competitive on his modified bikes but not on stock bikes I remember.

Wasn't Larry Brooks riding RMs during that time frame too?
What ever happened to Rick Simmett? I remember reading MXA's summer mini special in '85/'86 and it seemed like every other picture was Rick Simmett dominating his class.

He is after those guys time and after the period of which this post refers, but I had a pretty fast buddy up there named Jimmy Lamastus he was fast on 80's thru Big bikes
Natl# 75 at one time.

I met Simmit and Munson in Cadiz KY at a LL Quali.

Munson was from Rancho Cordova, CA me thinks, not WA

Willie Surratt a late Larry Brooks? But by 85 he was on 125's

Its been a long time but if I remember correctly my sister and Ronnie densfords sister used to get into some nock down drag out fights any time they were at dunes together it was on one time at a Friday night race I was watching the races and chick fight broke out 5or 6 girls and my buddy says hay look chick fight I calmly replied yea that’s my sister. Good times

I visited Barr's Competition last week and Rodney and his wife run a vending business on a military base in the Carolinas.

After 35 years Barr's Competition still build some of the strongest MX motors built! They also build crazy fast Jr Dragsters.

No, Munson was from Kennewick, Washington. My first race ever he was there and dominated the 80 class. Watching him got me really excited and inspired to get after racing.

I remember Lamastus, he was fast! Also remember a guy with the last name of Cooper. He rode KTM's in 125 and 250 pro. Zitterkopf was racing his ATK's in the northwest at the time as well. Eric Eaton was also a fast pro on the big bikes.

What ever happened to Rick Simmett? I remember reading MXA's summer mini special in '85/'86 and it seemed like every other picture was Rick Simmett dominating his class.
Rick Simmett moved up to the 125's and raced Suzuki's because the contigency was so good back then. I moved up a year before he did. He raced expert for quite awhile before turning pro and never seemed to have the speed or the motivation he had on 80's. He was compared to Mark Barnett when he was on 80's. The last time i saw him was in 1990 at a race in Idaho.

I lived in Cd'a Idaho for a short while back in the mid 90s and he was in the Wa. Area I understood. If I was trying to find Butch I would try Motion sports in C'da talk to Chaun McAllister, maybe Jimmy Lamastus if he still works there. My buddy Mark Henderson knew Butch back when I was in Idaho, but I lost contact with Mark, Jimmy after our stint living in the Phoenix area in 2003.

Man, what a surprise? I was just cruising through the site and saw my name mentioned. I used to race with Owens and Heathcott every weekend. If I remember correctly, I heard several years back that Owens was a stuntman in California. As far as Heathcott goes ... I haven't heard anything about him since the early 90's. Seeing names like Dennis Daft, Clay Hoenshell, and Whispern Smith takes me back to the good ole days in OK. When I was a kid I remember watching the battles between Clay Hoenshell, Guy Cooper, Dennis Daft, and Trey Jaworski. Those were some great battles!
I used to race with Dennis Daft, Guy Cooper, Clay Hoenshell in OK at Lawton MX.... Other guys like Carrol Richardson and Dennis Howthorn from Texas.... My name is Mike Bray... The photo is from the Loretta Lynnes National In 1983. I have not heard these names in years....

I held the number one plate. I walked into the Yamaha of Troy Shop after 30 plus years and Audie Ward recognized me right off. It was nice seeing him.... I want out to the race track and only the flag tower remained. Just so you are aware the Flying Wheels Race Track started from a drawing I made while in the 3rd grade. My father had the Army Engineers build the track from my design. It seems like just yesterday....

I have to call BS on the Loretta's number one plate unless you were just assigned that number. Mx Sports has all the past champs listed and Mike Bray is not listed.

Actually i believe it was his mom , correctme if i am wrong . She ran the las vegas motocross club as well as the old speedway track , as well as the track they had at apex near the airforce base b4 the speedway was built . Didnt she also do the world mini their for a while as well .

Yeah it was his mom and yes she ran those tracks. They also had a mothers motocross club that ran some of the tracks. Junior, Richard's dad just passed away. Great family and they did it all for the love of the sport. She also made the best grits at the track.

Mike Bray ... Hey I remember you. This is Eddy Cumins. Back in the day I raced at Lawton on Friday nights, 59th & Douglas on Saturday Nights, and Sundays at Howard's track on I-35. Back in the early 1980s I was still riding 60s and 80s, but I rember seeing you from time to time.

yeah and his sister was really hot in those tube tops...i think it was kristy...had her and angie ward in my dads el camino headed to the beach in laguna when we got in an accident...ruined my chances of some action and almost got in big trouble for driving with only a learners permit...

I grew up in Oklahoma. I don't remember the Hatfield brothers, but I do remember Steven Petree. I don't know when he quit racing, but he sings Christian music these days. If you do a search on google or you tube you'll find some information on him.

It is me... staying out of trouble.. pictures on profile, is all i could find for now. had a storage unit in las vegas, broken into, and they got all my old stuff... helmets, jerseys, file cabinet full of mags. and articles... even my race of champions trophy. NOT COOL!!! Sombody told me about this site awhile back, im just checking it out.. having some fun. Thank you for asking...

Great to see you on this site Paul! I was a huge fan of yours growing up. Gotta ask the obvious question, do you still ride and follow the sport? I'm sure everyone here would love to hear your opinions on the way the amateur series is run today.
