I am laughing quietly to myself about how they call that a "test." The "test" will, of course, be phenomenally successful, and then they'll write it into state law. That's a nice, new tax that they'll apply to every driver, including those of us who do not own electric cars. One more income stream for Gavin Newsom's slush fund... uh, I mean, State coffers! Yeah, it's for the people!

BTW, the tax is rumored to be 60 cents per mile. For reference, I have 280,000 miles on my Tacoma. Had I been paying the mileage tax all this time, I would have paid $168,000 in taxes, or nearly 7 times the cost of the vehicle when purchased new.

I will continue to say this until I'm blue in the face: Fuck the California legislature, and FUCK YOU, Gavin Newsom!

This is about pushing more and more people to live in the "15 minute" cities and acquiesce to public transportation.

Those who still have gas cars will no doubt be paying the gas AND mileage tax.

I love it here, but the reasons for staying are getting fewer and fewer...

There's no way $.60 a mile is accurate, CA gas tax is $.50 a gallon, it should be more like $.02 a mile.

I pay an extra $100 a year to register my wifes hybrid minivan in red state OH, it gets about 33mpg.

$.60 a mile would have an instant and detrimental impact to a ton of folks lifestlye.

It'd essentially kill the Cali moto scene I bet, how many folks who are making payments on their bike could afford an extra $50 (that's about what it'd be if someone had to drive 30 miles one way to a track) in fees every time they loaded up to go riding?

That's not even bringing into the equation how much extra they'd be out of pocket for day to day driving.

To me it sounds more fair than the way they do it now. All depends on the fine print. The numbers I am hearing are .02 to .03 per mile. Even at .03 it's cheaper than what I am paying now. Guys like me with full size pickups are getting hosed compared to what EV's and hybrids pay. Besides, gasoline is used for a lot of different kinds of equipment that has nothing to do with road usage. The road tax for gas is going to .60 gallon on July 1. .593 or some shit.

I can tell that you and Early do not live in California. Your reasoning that "this kind of tax would be highly detrimental to everyone living in California" assumes that the people at the highest level of our state's government give one dead rat's ass about those of us living paycheck to paycheck. They do not. It is abundantly clear that those in power in California want a ruling class and a slave class to serve them. No middle class at all.

I may be mistaken about the $0.60, but I'm pretty sure that's what I read about this proposed tax. Perhaps I'm conflating my information about the mileage tax and the gasoline tax, or perhaps even the person reporting the news was incorrect. I'll see if I can find my source and I'll post it up.

UPDATE: So, I was incorrect. The proposed tax is "up to" 4 cents per mile. That's still over $11,000 for me and my Toyota over the course of its lifetime so far, or more than $1,000 per year.

And let's take a poll: this tax is supposed to apply "instead" of the gasoline tax. How many of you think California will actually stop charging the gasoline tax?
I'll give you a hint: they will not.

I didn't have any reasoning for saying your number was inaccurate besides it being obviously inaccurate.
