Broken Tibia and Fibula Recovery Time

I've been reading some horror stories with this type of break. Possibility for many complications. Any other riders have this type and what was their comeback like? Hannah broke his water skiing but I don't know where the break was. Was he ever the same after that? Hoping for the best for RV.

no he wasn't the same- his was badly broken in 12 places

Best scenario 5-6 weeks, if you stressing it 11 weeks, but it`s from medical site so be free to ignore it

I spiral fractured mine in 01 still have nineteen pins and two plates. Still don't run well but I think that is my own fault. Took a long time to loose the limp but I have a leg. As far as recovery I think it was 6-8 weeks before I thought of flinging a leg over a bike. It's no bullshit but i would rather break the tib/fib then what Stewart is dealing with. RV will be back as strong as ever if it's not more complicated then a simple break to both. Oh yeah, it was seriously f-ing painful.

Took me 8 months in an external fixator and two more before I could ride. I was 40 old years old. My 16 year old son was plated and cleared to ride in 7 weeks........

Lots of fun.

Illzarov fixator?

5 months in that thing for me.

Then 6 weeks in cast.

Then 2 months of pain and being crippled.

Then new orthopedist, (the guy I requested, but the health insurance denied) had to rebreak and reset with 2 plates and 13 screws.

Then six more weeks in cast.

Lost 40% of ROM (range of motion)

Hurts most days.

47 years old at the time.

One full year of recovery, and of course no riding.

Still have my legWink

That's not good.

Lot's of small pieces to put back together. Might even have to do some type of bone graft.

Geez had a really jacked up tib fib break and could more than likely shed some light on this.

Mine was pinned inside and plated outside and as Lucero says about 8 weeks,but then it was weak from being in the cast with restricted movement,it was nearly 6 months until I felt fully comfortable with it,and as for wrist injuries,that smal Scaphoid bone between the hand and wrist is a nightmare as there is little or no blood flow on one side of the bone which means slow healing or never healing,mine was pinned after refusing to heal very quick,does anyone know if that's the one JS has done?

Im pretty sure thats it because he said the exact same thing about the slow healing and bloodflow in an inteview i saw. I dont know how many little bones there are in the wrist but thats probably it.

broke mine in 6 pieces, hence the avatar, 2 plates and about 12-13 screws... took about 4 month to walk again, cant kneel on it and lost some of the range of motion, the most pain ive ever been in .... but yes i still have my leg which when i 1st came in the surgeons were preparing me mentally for possible amputation. Luckily one of them knew of a severe trauma surgeon (Thank You Dr. Peter McGanity!!!!) and he took a look at it and calmed me by saying he could put it all back together again....Cool

I really don't thing anyone was being malicious here Guyb. I think it more of a concern about if he will be able to do any of the outdoors this year.

Right. It's just the rush to get back thing where I think people are overreaching. If/when he makes it back? Great.

But right now I think what's more important is to do it right. I have a tibia that I broke on a crash not nearly as gnarly as Villopoto's. It (and my knee) remind me every step that it was broken.

I agree with your first statement 100%

The second only adds fuel to the fire. Separately, both good bits of advice/information. Together it's kinda a yin/yang thing...

Broke my tib and fib with a spiral fracture and it was 6 months to ride. A friend had a nice clean break and he was back in 3 1/2 months. I would expect not to see him at all for the outdoors other than maybe the last couple rounds.

I don't believe there has been any surgery as of yet, and I wouldn't expect the procedure to take place in Saint Louis.

Tib/fib has always been lower leg.

I was told that surgery would have been within ten hours by Kawi personnel, but talked with a doc tell me that some of that would have been dependant on his condition.

Apparently he also wouldn't be allowed to fly for several days.

i broke my tib/fib on my left ankle and my tib on my right ankle. had an external fixator for a while, i still have the metal in my ankle... hasnt bothered me since then. RV will deff not be back for outdoors.. if he does come back it'll probably be around red bud. It's a horrible injury, when i broke mine my ankle felt like 200 lbs
