I've had dogs all my life, mostly larger ones.
I have had teeth on me plenty, and I have been bitten. 2 entirely different things.
The one time my dog bit me, I was trying to keep him from killing my sister-in-law's dog, who was a dip shit pug that needed killing. Last time I do that shit.
My very first memory was about 2 yrs old. Telling my mom not to cry as we rode in the ambulance to the ER to get my face and head sewn back on.
Parents had a Great Dane Dalmatian mix. I was told much later that "Rex" snatched me out of the crib and went to town. Mom said it was just shy of 300 stitches.
They loved the dog and to save a repeat they gave him to an older fella...and the dog chewed up him and his wife. They sent him to doggy heaven.
I don't hold a grudge. I probably got on his last nerve. Btw...I love my dogs.

I was pretty self-conscious about the facial scars during my teen years when yer weiner is always pokin' out.
The scars faded and I don't have any memory except my mom crying. It's all part of it.
Back in the day, if you turned up at a race with a dog, and it was on farm land, they would turn you away, and if you snuck it in and it got out , the farmer would shoot it.
When did MX become a dog show, my 3 year old grand daughter got ran at by a loose dog at the race last week, thing was the size of a fucking horse to her , scared her to death and took ages for her to settle again.
IMO not enough people put dangerous or sketchy dogs down till its too late.

My dog mangled my thumb. Bit through the nail, and ripped some out of the other side. Nothing like what you just described.
I did keep a dog behind our house while they were gone (12-13y.o.) He was a great Dane lab mix. Great dog. One day some dog, looked like a German shepherd mix came running into the yard with us. He looked like he was charging, but I don't know. Chuck grabbed me by the thigh, and chucked me to the side, and commenced to whip this dogs ass.
Everyone was freaking out about him biting me. I was the very last person on the earth he'd bite, and I finally convinced them of that. He wrecked a pair of Levi's and poked a couple of pretty good holes in my leg, but he was trying to protect me.
When my brother in law was little (3 years old) and neighbors pit bull got out while we was playing in the yard (kids used to do that).
Went right after him, mauled the shit out of his legs and feet (was in a wheelchair for months undergoing numerous surgeries).
When my father in law got home, there was a mysterious gunshot in the middle of the night around the neighbors backyard and that dog was no more. The owners did not even say anything about it, they probably knew it was coming.
This was 45 years ago, he still has scars all over his legs.

We spent 6 grand in training trying to help my ex GF german shepard maverick from having to be put down. Ive worked with all sorts of animals some just have bad intentions and this one did. 20 months old and it went after another person again. That was the last starw. We even tried giving it to a security company that works with dogs and they turned him back after a week. Just like people some dont work out.
14 months can be a little early to me. I guess thats my only gripe.
I've grown up with and handled dogs all my life. My Dad and Grandpa was really into coon hunting and we always had some of the best Treeing Walker coon hounds. A few state champions hunting and 2 world champions on bench. I had one dog that had 3 world champions on its pedigree. So I grew up knowing and learning about dogs, good dogs.
All that came in handy one day because If I didn't know pressure points and nerves on a dog I don't think I would have faired so well. It was the day after my birthday and I was real banged up. We were riding off road on my birthday and I waded it up real good in 5th gear on a KX 250. I had a concussion, 3 broken ribs, a broken finger and a huge bruise on my thigh. It was the next morning and I was walking it off in the back yard trying to get loosened doing some lunges and high stepping, heel to toe walking and stretching in very slow motion. I remember thinking to myself, OMG I'm kinda fucking hurt. Then the neighbors chow out of nowhere came around the corner of the house sniffing, looked up at me with the hair raised on his back and came running straight for me. I was like oh shit. When he got to me in full attack mode I caught him in the fucking air about shoulder level and we went at it until we hit the ground. He bit my right bicep, he bit my left wrist getting him off my arm and he bit my leg before I was able to get control of him. I was able to get a nerve in his foot while we were on the ground and he had my leg. That got his attention enough that I was able to get to a nerve below his ear. Dogs have a nerve below their ear that if you can find it will just incapacitate them. My hand and thumb must have been buried 5 inches into the back of that furry basket ball headed SOB's jawbone before I got to that nerve and he just went limp. I took a curtesy punch to his fucking snout before I decided I was going to kill this SOB. I smashed his windpipe and was going to hold it until it quit breathing when the 2, 8 year old neighbor twins came running into the yard, don't kill my dog, don't kill my dog. I waddled to my feet and it laid on the ground for a handful of minutes before it came back to. Their grandpa, who was like a second Dad to me came with a leash and led it off. I was all bloody and shit and he came back and asked what all happened and I told him. I just didn't understand why the dog would do that. 10 minutes later I heard a gun shot.
The funny part is that I knew I had 3 broken ribs because after rolling around with that SOB I couldn't hardly move. I went and got X-rayed for my ribs and 5 or 6 stiches in my arm. I had that laundry list of injuries and added stiches to the list. I was really hurting. I FUCKING HATE CHOWS!

My 1st Husky was a classic black and white blue eyed male…Gorby. He was born during the Raegan Gorbachev Summit…so,”Gorby” was a funny name for a Russian breed at the time.
When Gorby was about 3…a Chow from down the street attacked him; however, Gorby was holding his own. I tried to get Gorby to “drop” the Chow and every time he did…the Chow got a good bite in on one of Gorby’s legs. The HUGE Hawaiian that owned the Chow finally arrived out front of my place and got his dog. He was very cool and apologetic.
I took Gorby to the Vet and got some of the holes in his legs sewn up…
No shit…a few weeks later…the day Gorby’s stitches came out…after we’d been home for about an hour…that little shit head butted the gate open & bolted down the street…and had that Chow by the neck…was slamming him against the owners car. After a few minutes and with the Chow pretty messed up( (I finally got Gorby to “Drop” the Chow/the Chow’s neck was pretty messed up)…the owner of the Chow…a REALLY big dude…he starts yelling at HIS dog…”You see, Fucker! You see! I told you!”
I was apologizing…he said something along the lines of…”It’s O.K. Cuz. Sorry about your boy. My wife told me he got pretty fucked up last time. This ass hole had it coming.” We took his dog to the Vet this time.
We gain friends in some pretty crazy ways.

Thankfully, in my experience, it’s been rare. Sometimes..sadly…they’re unfixable.

I've seen two dogs together get downright savage with another animal.
Last year, Ollie (pictured in the pup thread) and his sidekick Ruka wasted a racoon before either one of us could even try to stop them.
Neither likely would have done that solo.
But who knows ??
And even my fat, lazy hairball of a cat can snap into full on killer mode when he sees a chipmunk or squirrel.
He's caught and killed both.
Feral dogs and cats out here in the country are always a problem.
Recently had a very aggressive shepherd mix running around loose.
Cornered Jenn in the driveway once.
Finally our neighbor had to eliminate it.
Sucks.

I guarantee you that she had a good reason, and every right to do what she did.

Just so you know, kids that grow up in the country see a whole lot different stuff than kids in the city.
Id rather them see a goat get shot than have to walk past homeless crapping in the streets and doing drugs any day.
I have lost friends over dogs, turning up at parties and BBQ's cos 'we cant leave him alone'.
And then my kids who hate dogs are scared in their own house.
My lad had his in laws buy a German Shepherd puppy ' for protection' when they had a babe in arms and a 2 year old, i could see the fear in his eyes every time it moved, i offered to take it to get it away from the kids, but he knew i would just fuck it off first chance i got.
So if someone took 'affirmative action' before it got silly, no problem.
Here in the UK so few people have the proper space for a dog, yet still have them, and its a PITA.
Alright, let's get back to the facts of the story.
The book isn't out yet so the only thing we have to go on is the excerpts from the Guardian article, but Noem hasn't disputed what was presented in the article or offered more insight into the dog behavior, as far as I've seen.
The dog "ruined" its 1 and only pheasant hunt at 14 months old.
The chicken incident apparently happened on the way home from the hunt.
The dog did not actually bite her, it "whipped around TO bite her". After that she wrote a check for the chickens and cleaned up the carcasses, she didn't seek medical attention for a bite.
She later describes killing a goat that would mess with her young kids but doesn't describe aggressive behavior towards the kids besides a blanket statement of the dog being aggresive.
Honestly, it seems to me this dog was slightly annoying, embarrassed her on the hunt, and then she still didn't keep control of it and it killed the chickens.
I understand the idea of not having a dog around that will kill your neighbors chicken if it gets the chance. I've seen that happen with chickens and other small pets. A dogs an animal and God made this dog to kill small animals. Some dogs are like that. I had a dog thar would bring ground hog heads into the house to showoff his newest victory, he got treats for that.
The point is, not every dog is right for every owner, and I just don't think it's right to take that out on the dog.
Is that to say, during those rare times, those puppies were put down… or should’ve been? Little untrainable fuckers!
