Purchased a blown up 99 KX250 in September ‘23 for $700. This is my first time rebuilding a dirt bike.

After tearing apart the motor, I converted a Harbor Freight sand blasting cabinet into a vapor blaster. It is powered by an Ingersoll Rand compressor pushing 16 CFM @ 60 p.s.i.

Please please please keep the same graphics on the rebuild! Love those team Chevy trucks shrouds even if I drive a Toyota.

I’m planning to do a newer year front fender as well as number plate both in green. From there back I’m leaning towards black plastics. I’ll keep in mind the Chevy graphics to see how they flow with black.

The main issue was a seized crank. Apart from that it needed a new piston and the jug needed replated.

Here are some pictures of the motor rebuild. Fully vapor blasted all cases, replaced all bearings, all new gaskets and seal, new Hot Rods crank, new clutch fibers and plates as well as clutch hub and basket, cerakoted inner clutch cover and power valve covers, Boyesen water pump cover and impeller, Boyesen clutch and stator covers, jug replated by MT, new Wiseco piston, VForce 3 reeds, new hardware.

You might catch a little shit on here for the Hot Rods crank, but good on you. It looks awesome and rip it!

Yes, I agree, rookie mistake. I tossed out the original seized crank then purchased a Wiseco crank. At that point I started reading up on how bad they are and opted for a Hot Rods. It’s too late now but if I do another build will definitely keep the OEM crank and have it rebuilt with a Pro X rod.

Good move on the Wiseco, but i wouldn't have a problem checking out the true and running the hot rod!  I'm not rich, and the internet. If you have the money "they" will say crankworks. Enjoy your bike, it looks great!

Checking the true is a step I must have missed. What could happen if it’s not true? Thanks OldTech!

Use v blocks and put a dial indicator on the bearing surfaces and check the runout. Generally ,if it's within .005" rip it!  And the thrust clearance for a 250 should be at least .020

Vapor blasted and rebuilt rear shock. New nitrogen bladder, piston bushing, seal, bumper, oil and powder coated the spring in candy purple.

That's cool.  Did you do the spring yourself?

Thanks cwtoyota! I did the vapor blasting myself but as for the powder coating that was done locally.

I bought the same habor freight sandblast cabinet last year, still new in the box. I plan on converting it into vapor blast cabinet like yours. Just need a little motivation like this me to get mine going! Do you have any links or resources for the cabinet build? I have most all the parts needed, just need to assemble and plumb it. Very cool build and following!

Got the frame back from powder coating and installed the pegs and motor.

The swing arm and linkages are vapor blasted. Those will need polishing then sent off to be hard anodized in black.
