Went to Ultimate MX in Alvin Texas this morning.  Nice day here in Southeast Texas, about 78 degrees.  Got dressed made a few laps.  Set down in my red folding chair and realized things were crawling all over me.  Wind got up and blew caterpillars out of the tree I was under.  They were all over me.  Didn’t stay under that tree long.  Kinda made my neck itch a little.

They were everywhere.

Yellow woolly bear caterpillars, harmless to us. They'll molt a few times and then turn into moths later this summer.

The Asp caterpillar is the one you really need to look out for, but they're not as prevalent as the woolly bears.

Wild year for nature... Mast year for oak trees dropping thousands of acorns, tons of caterpillars, soon to be upwards of a billion cicadas running loose.

Typo on my part I fixed it.  Well they were kinda attached to me.   Until I jumped up knocked them off.  Before I saw them first thing I thought of were asps.  Got stung by an asp under the same tree a while back.

We have four huge oaks and can't walk on our yard with bare feet right now because of the freakin acorns. Seems more like millions than thousands. I've never heard of a mast year, that explains it.

Anybody else that thought the op might have parked in a reserved spot and pissed off the track crew?

Thought we might see this again

{And yes, I do know his was a komatsu, not a caterpillar.}

Didn’t get to talk to Glenn, just said hi.  He was hooked up hauling dirt.  I think Brad said he had a contact to load and haul dirt.

That track was in great shape as always!

We just got over 3 years of gypsy moths, thousands everywhere. Took over half the mature hardwoods.

Millions is about right. If I could have figured out a way to monetize them I'd be a rich sob right now.

They’re out in Florida right now too. One lit my buddy up pretty good a couple weeks ago at the track. He had asked me earlier, “Can these things hurt you?” I told him they’ve never messed with me. Then again, I try not to let them hang out on me and get down my shirt.
